I think 2 might be a bit harsh but 3 feels like I'm pushing it a bit. I was so disappointed, I had such high expectations for this resort. The main positive are the grounds. The overall look of the resort is gorgeous, grounds are immaculate, the landscaping staff work relentlessly to keep everything pristine, not a blade of grass was out of place.
Everything else needs some help. Especially the FOOD. Awful, awful, awful. I survived on rolls, cucumber slices and watermelon all week. I haven't had food this bad at 3*s in Cuba. Good luck to you getting reservations at an a la carte unless you want to stand in line from 1-3pm (which I refuse to do, what a waste of your holiday). The only a la carte we got in to was the Steakhouse, which was supposed to be the best. The empanada style appetizer was so dry and overcooked you could probaly use it as a hammer, and the steak was so grizzly none of us ate them. The food at the buffet was absolutely inedible. Even the fruit wasn't ripe, and they made no effort to hide that they were recycling meat from prior meals. Refrigeration and food handling - sketchy at best. Even the water in the restaurants tasted so strongly of chlorine I had to start carrying the water from my room around with me.
Wifi is terrible, worked maybe 10% of the time and it's so expensive; they even warn you that it sucks before they charge you an arm and a leg for it. Free wifi should be standard at a resort like this. The resort is just too big... I was expecting something huge but this was ridiculous. It's layed out like a bowling alley so no matter where you are the walk is painful.
The rooms are nice, decor & layout is awesome. But the beds were the worst. They have this plastic sheet under the top sheet (I've given up on fitted sheets in Mexico) that is so uncomfortable and makes so much noise! Plus it only aggrevates the dampness in the room, the sheets feel wet by the end of the day. The AC worked great and was very quiet. Balconies were very large and had comfortable seating. TV isn't a big deal for me but I think there was a total of 2 English channels and one was hockey. The sliding doors seperating the bathroom from bedroom might be ok for couples but definitely not good if you're travelling with friends, 0 privacy.
I think the worst part for us was the staff. There were a small handful of polite and efficient people, but everyone else was rude beyond anything I've experienced down south. We were tipping very generously, and bar tenders would take your tip, look you in the eye, and turn around and serve someone else. Not cool! The lock on our door stopped working half way through the trip, between my friend and I we made a total of 19 round trips to the lobby over a 24hr period (which was FAR!) each time promised that this key would work and it didn't. Then they tried to charge me for all the keys I exchanged for new ones when I checked out. We constantly felt like we were being hustled, and it seemed very clear that the majority of staff really hated their jobs. The only bar tender that wasn't scowling the whole week was Felix at the Fantasy Pool bar.
The beach is nice for this part of Mexico - I prefer the water in Cancun so was pleasantly surprised. If you're travelling as adults, walk past the main area and the Platinum section to the adults only area, it's 100x better. The main section is so over crowded, you can't get close the water - it's all roped off and blocked by annoying beach vendors. If one more person approached my chair trying to sell me a massage or jet ski tour I was going to pull my hair out. The Chill Out beach club was very nice and had edible food, but shock - costs extra.
Overall, this wasn't the worst resort I've ever been to but I would definitely not go back ever, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There's a lot of potential but with the food and customer service in the state they're in I think this resort is going to struggle to get any repeat guests!
