“Miss that shower!”
Reviewed May 13, 2008

May 2 - 9, 2008.
Thanks to all those here on Tripadvisor who through their experience, criticism and thoughts helped us in having a truly magnificent vacation.
We booked our trip to Sunset Princess using bookit.com, whom we have used before and will not hesitate to use again.
Check in was a breeze. We arrived at 6 p.m. (late, thanks to USAirways) and we had a glass of champagne and wet towel to cool off.
Then we went to lobby bar downed a couple of beers and off to our room. We walked through the resort at dark but found our way.
Our room was in the Platinum building. We had requested via email(s) for a king bed, ocean view and top floor.
Two out of three isn't bad. We got the top floor with ocean view but two double beds. The room was so sweet (4205) we didn't want to give it up.
The view was (starting left to right) platinum pool, swimp up bar pool and the caribbean. Sunrise was awesome on the balcony as well as that jacuzzi tub. Nothing better than having a cocktail at nights end (2 a.m. for us) and looking up at the stars.
The jacuzzi in this particular room was private because being on the top floor, no one could peak down and in a corner so no one could look over.
We had room service for breakfast every morning. Only eggs, but any which way you want. Cereal was an option as well. Always asked for toast, juice and coffee and everything was perfect.
The first day we made reservations to all the a la cartes for the week with the concierge in platinum lobby. Ate at all a la carte restaurants except the Fondue. We opted to go to Playa Del Carmen that night and have dinner there.
Miso was great but too much food. The least liked was Le Fleur, it was good but portions were small.
We ate outside of all a la carte restaurants, they seem to all look alike after awhile, but it was quiet and romantic.
Did not hit any buffets, just not our style. For lunch we would eat snacks in platinum lobby.
The beach was nice, seen better (like Punta Cana, even our beaches in Jersey). Too rocky for my liking.
Did some snorkeling right off the beach at Princess. Yes there is fish, but nothing we haven't seen before. Make sure it is a calm day if you snorkel.
The bar at the beach was nice but service was slow. We would alternate bathroom breaks (which by the way were quite a hike)
and get drinks on the way back. It worked. When there was drink serice, Lily was our server and she was great.
We hung out in the Platinum section because it was quiet, the loungers were nice and always found shade. We never got to the beach until after noon as well.
After beaching it, we went to the platinum pool and had some snacks with cocktails before dinner. Hilario is the best bartender. He came to Princess from Iberostar after six years. Take care of him, he is good people.
I will say what another reviewer stated, PLATINUM is for PLATINUM and they do check, but not enough if you ask me. The day they ran out of beer and ice (read about this elsewhere), visitors of another platinum guest did come into the pool area and the guest was getting them drinks.
Well apparently they came back again the next day and a riff raff broke out with finger pointing. From then on, no more bottled beer in pool area. Thanks to those who insisted on getting what they did not pay for.
This is what we pay extra for, peace and quiet.
We seem to think that the Platinum section would be better suited for adults only. Nothing against children, but there really is nothing for children to do in the Platinum section except run around dripping wet on marble making it easy for folks to slip and fall.
There are plenty of other pools to hang out at.
Lets' see, the sports bar was open 24 hrs. Only beer after midnight as well as snacks. Only ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Espanol. So, no baseball or hockey. Not even the de la Hoya fight. Go figure!
Housekeeping was okay. They knocked on our door every morning at nine for beverage service which we did not respond to. Then a half hour later came housekeeping. Again, we did not answer. Make sure when locking your door with deadbolt, you turn twice.
In summary, this resort is lovely, lots of beautiful marble (green ones imported from Spain) and the workmanship with the tiles is superb. Some minor inperfections here and there, but the size of the resort and amount of marble and tile laid is incredible. Speaking of marble, be careful when wet, even in room.
Going to take alot of upkeep for this place. Gardens are beautiful and will get even more so. Lots of wildlife along side of the resort. Workers are courteous and work very hard. Hard for them to stop and smile for they seem overwhelmed.
We struck up many conversations with people from Madrid, Chili, Peru, "BOISE" Idaho, West Virginia, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Canada, and surprisingly no one from New York.
The shower, oh how I miss that shower.

My Husband and I stayed at this hotel from May 6- May 12. We loved it! The food and the alcohol was great. The best things were the pools and the service. I did have problems with reservations, so I would recommend that you make them before you leave. All the restaurants were great. PS bring bug spray.

A friend and I visited from May 3rd thru the 9th. One word can sum up our stay... FANTASTIC! We were starting to be concerned after reading so many unhappy reviews, but please, unless you expect the unreasonable it is great place to go! We prepared ourselves for mosquitos, but didn't have any problem. I one here and there, but none in our room and didn't not get any bug bites of any kind during our whole week! The food was good and there was always alot to chose from. Sometimes the hot food on the buffets were not kept as hot as we have to keep food in the States, but it wasn't bad and you could always have the show cooks make it fresh if you were really concerned about it. This resort is very large! If you have a problem walking it may not be the best place for you, but they do have shuttles that we always seen running from the front to the beach and back to the front again. I guess the problems that all the previous reviews kept complaining about must have been corrected. They resort mixes nature and luxury very well to my opion! What I didn't notice in previous reviews is that the "swamp" area they complain about is actually a mangrove and is protected as a nature preserve. I can hardly wait to go back again!

  • Liked — The pools and the Room was pure luxury!
  • Disliked — Maid service varied from day to day, no wash cloths most days!

We stayed at the sunset april 26 to may 3rd and had a wonderful time. nine of us went 7 adults two teenage girls and from start to finish was amazing and we wish we had of booked two weeks.. no problems whatsover..we put all our valubles in the safe including $500.00 U.S and no problems. you punch in a 4 code number and be smart dont use any part of your phone number, no mosquitoes to be seen, nobody in our group of anyone we talked to had any sickness, good food, checkin a breeze, rooms beautiful, beach amazing except for the rocks in the water but hey we were all in every day and so were a lot of other vacationers.. staff was great except for the odd bartender which had a attitude even when tipping but most were very friendly, the servers for lunch and supper were excellent and they were the ones that we tipped generously. we have been to the myan many times and this was just as good as all the rest if not better.i can see this place in a couple of yrs being $2,500 plus a week. we all wish we were back there right now and depening on the price we are looking to go back next year in april for two weeks....too all who have complained about this place you must not have been at the same GRAND SUSET PRINCESS i was at...PETERBOROUGH ONTARIO

I just returned from my stay at GSP. We stayed May 3rd through the 10th. We stayed in the swim-up suite. The resort is beautiful but it definitely does not make up for all the problems we encountered here. I know it can be hit or miss with some people, because others in our group did not have the same problems as we did.

This is my 4th all-inclusive in Mexico and it definitely was the worst. I have read every review on this website and thought how bad can a vacation be? Well, I am convinced when the majority of reviews are in the negative, I will be booking elsewhere. Our room and the service made this vacation almost too much to handle. I was not sad to leave at all....in fact, I was ready to book somewhere else or go home by the second day. As I have read in some reviews, the mosquitoes were a problem.....DEFINITELY A PROBLEM FOR US!!!!! We had over 100 of them in our room the first day and throughout our entire stay. The staff at this hotel will do nothing for you if you have a problem....they don't care!!!! We asked to be moved....didn't happen. It is very unfortunate for those who spend money on a vacation and are miserable the entire time. Our room was dark and stinky....If we left our swimsuits in the bathroom to dry overnight, they would have mold growing on them by morning. I'm not kidding!!! I have had to wash every item I took with me 2 times to get the smell from our room out of the clothing. We went through 2 cans of insect repellant in our room. There was smashed mosquitoes all over the walls, mirrors, and linens. It made me sick to look at this daily!!!!

I could seriously write so many negative comments about this place but I am not going to take the time to do it. I will just sum it up as quickly as possible.....reservation process is TERRIBLE, buffet staff is rude (a few people are exceptions to this), rooms are dark and smelly, and the reception staff is rude and awful!!!!!!

If you have never been to another all-inclusive, you may really appreciate the GSP. I would never stay here again!!!!!! You couldn't pay me to stay here again!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had no complaints while at the Grand Sunset Princess. Whatever we needed, they resolved quickly. The rooms and resort are beautiful. Our shower did leak, but we took the preventative measures that were suggested by previous guests and put a towel down from the beginning. We had 6 people in our group and everyone was pleased. Several former guests who posted previously said something to the affect of a good attitude will help you. I agree!!! If you decide to do the hotels a la carte restaurants, be prepared to get to the reservation area early and book all of your choices at once. We all had wonderful meals at the Grill, The Italian, and The Japanese reasturants. The buffets were okay and most things tasted a little off, but we did not starve by any means. There was a wide variety of food for everyone. The Sports Bar is good for late night snacks and good french fries throughout the day. The massages on the beach ar an absolute MUST the cost was $20 for 30mins or $40 for 60mins. This is one of the highlights of our trip! There is a lot of walking to be done at the resort. Considering how much you eat and drink while there, that is probably a good thing. The resort does have a free shuttle to Playa del Carmen, which only picks up on the Riviera side. I suggest that you do not wait until the last minute on the day you want to go to make a reservation since the shuttles do fill up. They pick up several times a day and return at 6pm, but the cab ride to and from Playa is around $13 if you want to go another time. There is also shopping at the hotel on Saturday evenings--where they have an open market out in the center area below the theater. People do put towels out early to reserve their spots by the pools. We tiped the minibar and housekeepers daily ($2 each per day) and we had everything that we requested. Go with a positive and relaxed attitude and you will have a great time. Take plenty of insect repellant and sunscreen and you will be good to go. This seemed to be a problem on the 1st floor only. My room was on the 3rd flr and we had no problems with bugs of any kind. Keep in mind that this resort is brand new and understaffed. If you want someone at your beck and call this is not the place, but if you can take your time and wait 5 mins for something you'll be happy here. LOVE LOVE LOVE'D IT!

Our group of eleven had a excellent time at the Princess. Check in was done at the airport prior to boarding the bus and our keys(cards) and bracelets were given to us at that time. Just a reminder that if have purchased platinum rooms that you should let them know so you can get the right bracelet.

Rooms were fantastic and clean. No problem with the safes. We had a beautiful view of the beach. Be sure to watch for the spider monkeys down by the platinum rooms.

We had no problem booking our restaurants (booked upon arrival) with the excellent service at the platinum lobby. I would also suggest that if you want to book a massage(half hour free if you fly with Sunwing) that you book it as soon as you get there. Food was good, something for all to enjoy. The Japenese Restaurant was our favorite. Don't miss the Beach Party Buffet for Platium guests (Fri Night)

Say Hi to Caesar at the Platinum lounge and ask for a special drink -love connection . The platinum perks are well worth the money.

We would recommend this resort for all ages. We were from age 6 to 70.

We found the beach lovely and snorkeling was great right from the beach.

Playa de Carmen ws only 15 minutes away for shopping. We went to the X-Caret park and enjoyed a great variety of activities (snorkeling, beach, acquarium, Mexican show, under ground river and lots of animals to see. It was a full day but worth it.

Also went to Delphinus - swimming with the dolphins was a great excursion if you want a great dolphin experience. The foot push was amazing!!!

If you are truly going on a vacation to relax then you will love it .

  • Liked — The tub on the deck and the feeling of being pampered.
  • Disliked — The rude guests who 2 paid for platium and the rest of their group felt they were entitled to platium
