May 2 - 9, 2008.
Thanks to all those here on Tripadvisor who through their experience, criticism and thoughts helped us in having a truly magnificent vacation.
We booked our trip to Sunset Princess using bookit.com, whom we have used before and will not hesitate to use again.
Check in was a breeze. We arrived at 6 p.m. (late, thanks to USAirways) and we had a glass of champagne and wet towel to cool off.
Then we went to lobby bar downed a couple of beers and off to our room. We walked through the resort at dark but found our way.
Our room was in the Platinum building. We had requested via email(s) for a king bed, ocean view and top floor.
Two out of three isn't bad. We got the top floor with ocean view but two double beds. The room was so sweet (4205) we didn't want to give it up.
The view was (starting left to right) platinum pool, swimp up bar pool and the caribbean. Sunrise was awesome on the balcony as well as that jacuzzi tub. Nothing better than having a cocktail at nights end (2 a.m. for us) and looking up at the stars.
The jacuzzi in this particular room was private because being on the top floor, no one could peak down and in a corner so no one could look over.
We had room service for breakfast every morning. Only eggs, but any which way you want. Cereal was an option as well. Always asked for toast, juice and coffee and everything was perfect.
The first day we made reservations to all the a la cartes for the week with the concierge in platinum lobby. Ate at all a la carte restaurants except the Fondue. We opted to go to Playa Del Carmen that night and have dinner there.
Miso was great but too much food. The least liked was Le Fleur, it was good but portions were small.
We ate outside of all a la carte restaurants, they seem to all look alike after awhile, but it was quiet and romantic.
Did not hit any buffets, just not our style. For lunch we would eat snacks in platinum lobby.
The beach was nice, seen better (like Punta Cana, even our beaches in Jersey). Too rocky for my liking.
Did some snorkeling right off the beach at Princess. Yes there is fish, but nothing we haven't seen before. Make sure it is a calm day if you snorkel.
The bar at the beach was nice but service was slow. We would alternate bathroom breaks (which by the way were quite a hike)
and get drinks on the way back. It worked. When there was drink serice, Lily was our server and she was great.
We hung out in the Platinum section because it was quiet, the loungers were nice and always found shade. We never got to the beach until after noon as well.
After beaching it, we went to the platinum pool and had some snacks with cocktails before dinner. Hilario is the best bartender. He came to Princess from Iberostar after six years. Take care of him, he is good people.
I will say what another reviewer stated, PLATINUM is for PLATINUM and they do check, but not enough if you ask me. The day they ran out of beer and ice (read about this elsewhere), visitors of another platinum guest did come into the pool area and the guest was getting them drinks.
Well apparently they came back again the next day and a riff raff broke out with finger pointing. From then on, no more bottled beer in pool area. Thanks to those who insisted on getting what they did not pay for.
This is what we pay extra for, peace and quiet.
We seem to think that the Platinum section would be better suited for adults only. Nothing against children, but there really is nothing for children to do in the Platinum section except run around dripping wet on marble making it easy for folks to slip and fall.
There are plenty of other pools to hang out at.
Lets' see, the sports bar was open 24 hrs. Only beer after midnight as well as snacks. Only ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Espanol. So, no baseball or hockey. Not even the de la Hoya fight. Go figure!
Housekeeping was okay. They knocked on our door every morning at nine for beverage service which we did not respond to. Then a half hour later came housekeeping. Again, we did not answer. Make sure when locking your door with deadbolt, you turn twice.
In summary, this resort is lovely, lots of beautiful marble (green ones imported from Spain) and the workmanship with the tiles is superb. Some minor inperfections here and there, but the size of the resort and amount of marble and tile laid is incredible. Speaking of marble, be careful when wet, even in room.
Going to take alot of upkeep for this place. Gardens are beautiful and will get even more so. Lots of wildlife along side of the resort. Workers are courteous and work very hard. Hard for them to stop and smile for they seem overwhelmed.
We struck up many conversations with people from Madrid, Chili, Peru, "BOISE" Idaho, West Virginia, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Canada, and surprisingly no one from New York.
The shower, oh how I miss that shower.
