“Exceptional Vacation Spot!”
Reviewed May 12, 2008

We had no complaints while at the Grand Sunset Princess. Whatever we needed, they resolved quickly. The rooms and resort are beautiful. Our shower did leak, but we took the preventative measures that were suggested by previous guests and put a towel down from the beginning. We had 6 people in our group and everyone was pleased. Several former guests who posted previously said something to the affect of a good attitude will help you. I agree!!! If you decide to do the hotels a la carte restaurants, be prepared to get to the reservation area early and book all of your choices at once. We all had wonderful meals at the Grill, The Italian, and The Japanese reasturants. The buffets were okay and most things tasted a little off, but we did not starve by any means. There was a wide variety of food for everyone. The Sports Bar is good for late night snacks and good french fries throughout the day. The massages on the beach ar an absolute MUST the cost was $20 for 30mins or $40 for 60mins. This is one of the highlights of our trip! There is a lot of walking to be done at the resort. Considering how much you eat and drink while there, that is probably a good thing. The resort does have a free shuttle to Playa del Carmen, which only picks up on the Riviera side. I suggest that you do not wait until the last minute on the day you want to go to make a reservation since the shuttles do fill up. They pick up several times a day and return at 6pm, but the cab ride to and from Playa is around $13 if you want to go another time. There is also shopping at the hotel on Saturday evenings--where they have an open market out in the center area below the theater. People do put towels out early to reserve their spots by the pools. We tiped the minibar and housekeepers daily ($2 each per day) and we had everything that we requested. Go with a positive and relaxed attitude and you will have a great time. Take plenty of insect repellant and sunscreen and you will be good to go. This seemed to be a problem on the 1st floor only. My room was on the 3rd flr and we had no problems with bugs of any kind. Keep in mind that this resort is brand new and understaffed. If you want someone at your beck and call this is not the place, but if you can take your time and wait 5 mins for something you'll be happy here. LOVE LOVE LOVE'D IT!

Our group of eleven had a excellent time at the Princess. Check in was done at the airport prior to boarding the bus and our keys(cards) and bracelets were given to us at that time. Just a reminder that if have purchased platinum rooms that you should let them know so you can get the right bracelet.

Rooms were fantastic and clean. No problem with the safes. We had a beautiful view of the beach. Be sure to watch for the spider monkeys down by the platinum rooms.

We had no problem booking our restaurants (booked upon arrival) with the excellent service at the platinum lobby. I would also suggest that if you want to book a massage(half hour free if you fly with Sunwing) that you book it as soon as you get there. Food was good, something for all to enjoy. The Japenese Restaurant was our favorite. Don't miss the Beach Party Buffet for Platium guests (Fri Night)

Say Hi to Caesar at the Platinum lounge and ask for a special drink -love connection . The platinum perks are well worth the money.

We would recommend this resort for all ages. We were from age 6 to 70.

We found the beach lovely and snorkeling was great right from the beach.

Playa de Carmen ws only 15 minutes away for shopping. We went to the X-Caret park and enjoyed a great variety of activities (snorkeling, beach, acquarium, Mexican show, under ground river and lots of animals to see. It was a full day but worth it.

Also went to Delphinus - swimming with the dolphins was a great excursion if you want a great dolphin experience. The foot push was amazing!!!

If you are truly going on a vacation to relax then you will love it .

  • Liked — The tub on the deck and the feeling of being pampered.
  • Disliked — The rude guests who 2 paid for platium and the rest of their group felt they were entitled to platium

We just returned from a one-week stay at the Grand Sunset Princess (5/3-5/10). The resort is new and very beautiful, but is still experiencing growing pains due to the fact that the staffing level is inadequate.

We stayed at the resort during the first week of the "off season" and due to the lower prices, the hotel occupancy rate was approximately 98%. THEY CANNOT HANDLE IT at this point. The only reason our stay was enjoyable was because we had upgraded to the Platinum level (for an additional $630), where we enjoyed a private pool, extra drink/waiter service and nearly "round-the-clock" special snacks in the bar area. Also, free room service (food only) is available to Platinum members.

In addition, Platinum members can book their entire week of dinners in the specialty restaurants (with the assistance of the concierge)--but if you go Platinum, be sure to do this when you arrive.

The level of service in the regular (buffet) restaurants leaves a lot to be desired. We found it to be inconsistent. Sometimes, we would get service (such as assistance with drinks); other times, we were ignored. Often, tables could not be set quickly enough to accommodate incoming guests. (I quickly found out where they kept forks, knives, napkins, etc.)

The Platinum service at the beach is spotty (as in the buffet restaurants). Your best bet is to hang by the Platinum pool--again, if you elect (or are upgraded to) Platinum. If you don't have the Platinum bracelet, you will be thrown out of there. No joke. (You may also be accused--as I was, unjustly--of "ratting out" another non-Platinum guest who is thrown out of the Platinum area!) ; )

Check-in was horrible (terribly slow and for no apparent reason); check-out was a breeze.

In time, this resort has the potential to be "over the top" in our opinion. But it has a long way to go to get there.

  • Liked — The Platinum service (in the pool area)
  • Disliked — The lack of service in the buffet restaurants

May4-May9
After reading many many reviews and seeing plenty of poor reviews we were ready to get what we paid for. Our trip was in expensive, our airfare cost more than our stay, and even though the pictures looked amazing and the detail on the page we read real reviews from people that have stayed there.
THE POOR REVIEWS WERE WRONG!!!
The beach was great, the water was clear in most places inside the roped off areas where you could swim. There were constantly staff picking up debris from the beach and hauling it away. If you sit in a certain area on the beach they bring you drinks. There were ALWAYS plenty of chairs and even a few extra "huts", we were outside to tan so we didn't have use for them. The waves weren't too rough it was perfect.
The room was great. We had a Jr. Deluxe Suite. Nothing to complain about everything to brag about~!~ The fridge was stocked every day by noon, the room was cleaned everyday by noon, never had an issue about towels, no flooding in the shower, the jacuzzi tub worked wonderfully. The tv was great of course the interesting channels were all in spanish which were fun to watch but neither me or my husband speak fluent spanish. Our room did stay chilly, we fixed that by opening the screen door to the balcony. We didnt have to leave the key in the slot for anything other than the lights so the room was always cool when we got back from the beach or tours.
The food. I will say we did only eat at the buffets due to the fact that my husband didnt bring any long pants. Honestly I had no problem with that. No reservations needed and the food was fabulous. They had some of the same food every night but even that was good enough to eat everynight. Breakfast too was delicious. It was great to be able to try everything. The 5th avenue bar had sandwiches burgers and nachos which were available 24/7. When busy the service was slow but otherwise you got your food in 5 minutes or less.
Alcohol. THEY do not skimp at all~!~ The bar in/ by the pool have many different kind of daquiri's a rum and coke is equal parts rum and coke.
The pools were salt water pools or freshwater which ever you prefer to call them. They were nice. There was always one where you could just get in and relax without much noise or people around you. In the center pool there were games and music and lots of fun but we definately prefered the more relaxed pools.
The pathways were lit and the lagoons and pools too at night. Beautiful. This place is wonderful. My husband and I got up around 630 every morning and you could see the staff doing routine upkeep and it was so peacful hearing the birds and wind.
Staff. We booked through AAA, but they booked us through Apple. It was so personal, our apple representative knew our name from the time we introduced ourselves and he was sure to call us by our names all week. He was friendly and was quick to please. The staff at the buffets were great, sometimes slow about drinks but still very friendly and didnt forget what you were drinking. The bartenders were great. The bar between the buffets was the funniest. When they werent busy they would sit and converse with you and make jokes that only they could make funny. The other bartenders were great. Ask what their favorite is or their specialty and you'll get something good everytime. Staff at check in and the conciege*sp desk were slow and hard to understand and often times couldnt understand us. We did ask for a room service menu for food and they kept sending up room sevice to clean the room.
Tours!! Chichen Itza was AMAZING we again booked through apple right behind the sunset lounge and had great guides *roberto, edwauardo, and jamie...Its a long trip but worth it!!! We also went shopping with Javier through funjet. Worth it very funny guide and the tour had a stop at Senor frogs...Hilarious.
Okay so thats all the amazing things...
the only not so great thing other than no room service food menu...we got up early before the fountains were on and there was a muggy musty smell...yes really thats the only ONLY downfall...I definately want to go back when our son is older and it would be amazing to go with friends! We went to have a good time and enjoy each other again and we accomplished that and more. This trip is perfect if you are going to enjoy yourselves. If your going to critique a resort too I say go for it, i did not see any reason to say anything bad. I LOVED my experience. We have tons of pictures and videos that we will be posting as soon as we get batteries for the camera. The Grand sunset princess website doesnt do it justice.

Let me start by saying I read a number of reviews both good and bad regarding this resort. I honestly cannot understand the negativity of some reviews as we found this resort absolutely incredible. You must remember though that you are in Mexico and the facilities are not quite the same as the US, Canada or Europe.

The rooms: We stayed in a junior deluxe swim up with a King size bed. It was a joy to just walk out of your room right into the pool with a lounger beside the stairs and a jacuzzi just a few feet away. Across the pool, there were countless loungers and cabanas for sunning or sitting in the shade reading a book. It's true the housekeeping leaves something to be desired but we found the older housemaids did a much better job. Make sure you leave a couple of dollars and they will leave you little towel creations on your bed and the level of cleanliness improves.

The bars: We utilized the pool bar nearest the beach on the Riviera side. The best bartender here is Carlos. I have included a picture. He makes awesome drinks and works his tail off to keep everybody happy. We tipped him every day and my glass never reached empty. The party bar is in the center of the resort. They enjoy pushing the tequila here. The animation staff was good at keeping people going but I found the bar staff was not as friendly. Could have used more staff here because these people were terribly overworked trying to serve everyone. There were also staff walking around the pools taking orders as well. The Sunset bar by the lobby served the best drinks on the site. Enrique make the most incredible Pina Colada imaginable. Here again a couple of bucks a day goes a long way.

The restaurants: It's true the food at the buffets gets somewhat cold as they rely on heat lamps instead of a steam buffet. Watch for whatever the cooks have on the grill and you will get good hot food. The pasta and fish are great. If you try a hamburger, it just doesn't taste the same as a burger back home. The alacartes were great. We were supposed to get 3 choices but they gave us 6. We had the japanese twice, italian, mexican, international and seafood. All were outstanding. The wait staff was unbelieveably attentive.

The resort: It is absolutely huge. I read a lot of grumbling about the walking. You will eat so much it is a relief to work some of it off. All along the pathways are large statues with some whimsical characters. The flora is starting to mature however it will be a while for the palm trees to provide any real shade. The beach is great. You can get a half hour massage for $20. Take a walk to the point heading back towards Cancun. They are building a huge resort there and it is interesting to watch how they do their construction. Lots to do from parasailing to catamarans to jet skis. As in previous reviews, I would recommend taking water shoes in the water as I saw a number of people being attended to for cuts from the rocks in the water.

All in all, I would go back in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, we are already planning to go back after the new year and take the kids. Hope this helps but for what you get for your money, you can't go wrong here.

  • Liked — Attentiveness from staff, food and drink.
  • Disliked — Housekeeping could use more people to do clean a little more. They are pressed for time.

My Husband and I and another couple went to Riveria Maya
GSP 5/1-5/6. We loved the environment, rooms, pools and choices of restaurants. There were no mosqitoes like others said. We never got bit once. The only thing is that we all got sick. NO we didn't drink the water. I don't think I can blame GSP but we had daquiris without alchol and got the runs. We also ate at the buffett everyday and had our choice of foods. The best restaurantst to eat at were Le Fondue and La Hacienda the rest were weird and had weird food. Be prepared to walk and DO NOT use the phone to call the states. No one at the hotel knew how much it cost. I was quoted several different prices and finally when I got the charge on my credit card I found out for 2 one minute calls it was $41 a piece OH MY...
. If you're nice to the staff and tip them even a $1 they will go out of their way for you
If you want to eat at the restaurants do not go through the conceirge for reservations. Sometimes if you just show up and give the hostess a tip and ask for a table the will seat you. More than often people make reservations for teh restaurants and don't even show up. They are either too tired or too drunk. If you don't get reservations the buffett will do.
The shows that they have nightly are mediocre but give you something to do.
Overall It was a great vacation. I would go there again

We had no complaints while at the Grand Sunset Princess. Whatever we needed, they resolved quickly. The rooms and resort are beautiful. If you wake up early and walk the back path used by the workers and golf carts you can see monkees in the trees eating. I don't know whether the showers leaked or not. We took the preventative measures that were suggested by previous guests and put a towel down from the beginning. We had 7 people in our group and everyone was pleased. Someone who posted previously said something to the affect of a good attitude will help you. I agree!!! You know you are not coming to a resort with gourmet restaurants so don't complain about repetitive, non-gourmet food, even at the a la cartes. If you want the best food, pay top $ and go to a resort that is known for its 5 star chef's and fabulous food. They are definitely out there but you will also be out of a lot more money. You are on vacation. Vacation means slowing things down from your normal hectic life. Since you are being leisurely, what is your rush to finish meals and have waiters at your beck and call instantly? We did not have to wait an inordinate amount of time for anything we asked for, but then again, we were taking our sweet time ourselves. Why rush any of your vacation time away? It will be over way before you are ready anyway. If you do want to try a tasty restaurant outside of the hotel and you take the ferry over to Cozumel, do not miss going to El Capi Navigante. The lobster thermidor, grilled shrimp, shrimp bisque and fried grouper are all delicious. I made a special trip back here from 2 years ago to get the bisque again. If you decide to do the hotels a la carte restaurants, be prepared to get to the reservation area early and book all of your choices at once. We were not overly excited about the a la cartes, but some people have said that they were so I guess it is just a matter of opinion. We preferred the buffets and generally ended up there after the a la cartes. The Sport Bar is good for late night snacks and good french fries throughout the day. The beach is rocky as reported by others. Bring water shoes and you will have no problem. There is a stand off to the right of the beach (if you are walking towards the water) that will give you snorkeling masks and fins or body boards. There is no cost for this since they are not moterized. There is no information that directed us there for the equipment, I just found it being nosy. There is a lot of walking to be done at the resort. Considering how much you eat and drink while there, that is probably a good thing. I don't know anyone who is so healthy they couldn't stand a wee bit of walking. I believe they have some shuttle service around the resort but never felt the need to utilize it. My legs worked well enough and even became more toned. For the gym rats that are going, the gym is actually very nice and modern compared to some that I have seen at other resorts. The resort does have a free shuttle to Playa del Carmen, which only picks up on the Riviera Maya side. I suggest that you do not wait until the last minute on the day you want to go to make a reservation since the shuttles do fill up. Do not shop in the area where the hotel shuttle drops you off. The prices are ridiculous. Take a cab from the shuttle drop off to where the ferry to Cozumel is. The shops on the beach by the ferry are much better and have a larger variety. There is also shopping at the hotel on one particular evening (can't remember the day) where they have an open market out in the center area below the theater. There is a guy who does wonders with spray paint. I also got some jewelry for reasonable rates, but the prices were still better outside of the hotel on some items. If you want a massage, I suggest getting it at one of the discount massage locations in Playa. We got an hour for $32 and it was excellent. People do put towels out early to reserve their spots by the pools, but there are so many connected pools we never had a problem finding a spot. Please leave a dollar or two for the people cleaning your room and stocking the mini bar. They really do not get paid much daily. They really appreciate it and will go out of their way to make you comfortable and happy. We did not experience any long check in times, although it does seem to confuse them when you check in and out as a group and they have to use multiple credit cards. But, no worries, there is a bar and comfortable seating right across from the reservation desk. We booked directly with the hotel and found it cheaper now than BookIt or any other travel site. You also do not have to pay in advance this way. Go with a positive and relaxed attitude and you will have a great time. Take plenty of insect repellant and sunscreen and you will be good to go.

  • Liked — The cleanliness and luxuriousness of the resort and the rooms. They take great pains to keep everything beautiful.
  • Disliked — People letting their chidren stay up half the night and partaking in adult activities like some of the animation shows and the sports bar. Some of the unsupervised teenagers tore up the felt on a brand new pool table in the Sports Bar.
