We were part of a wedding group that visited this hotel April 8 - 15, 2013, and it was the nicest place I have ever stayed. We took our three boys with us, aged 14, 11 and 5, and everyone had a great time. There was something for everyone - pool tables, archery, swimming, the beach... it was an amazing time. The food was very good, and the variety on the buffet was excellent - my five year old has never eaten so much!

The Mama Mia a la carte was delicious, but we were not as impressed with la hacienda. I suspect it is just because of the different type of food.

I highly recommend this hotel - the staff are constantly working to keep it nice - many guests would set their cups on the deck, and the wind would take them away, but they were picked up very quickly. We saw many rooms being cleaned and painted... the upkeep is constant in this resort. The staff were very friendly, and everyone said "hola" as they passed. I never felt unsafe at any point during this vacation - my sons were treated with respect, and enjoyed every day in this resort. We did a couple of off site excursions - the dune buggies and the Tulum ruins. Both were an excellent value for the money - the buggies allowed us to swim in tow cenote's as well. Was an amazing experience. Tulum was breathtaking (but there is little shade, so the boys didn't like it much)

I highly recommend this resort - you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: We went to this hotel with a group of 24, and were able to see several different types of rooms. The...

We stayed at the Sunset March 6th - 17th. The Hotel and grounds are absolutely beautiful, as are the rooms. we stayed in room 1002 which is immediately next to the front lobby. It was convenient for us as we travelled with our two girls (ages 4-6) as the majority of restaurants and shows are right there. This room was just a "normal" one not upgraded to platinum or Laguna villa. For our 11 days it would have been ~ $420 to upgrade but decided to not, and made the right choice as our room was very nice. We went with a local travel agent (Josephine from Valente travel in Windsor) which I would recommend as she booked 8 a-le-carte restaurants for us before arrival so we wouldn't have to endure the line-ups and tedious booking procedure! The grounds and hotel are 2nd-to-none here, ridiculously beautiful! We enjoyed all the meals and buffet but it is somewhat repetitive but still always something good to eat, comparable to other resorts we've been to (Riu's, Iberostar, etc). There are pools everywhere you look and lots of available seating same goes for the beach. However as other reviewer's mention the huts selling stuff at beach is a huge eye sore and we had to travel further down the beach to enjoy a view. The first 10' of the beach has a bunch of rocks but nothing to cry about (my kids had no issues) but it's just not as nice as say the Bavaro beach in Punta Cana.

A few tips to share:
The vino tinto (red wine) here sucks. I wouldn't call in wine... My recommendation is this, for us we always go into Playa Del Carmen and enjoy an amazing authentic meal at EL FOGON. the food is amazing, it's a $5 cab ride from 5th Ave and right across the street is the Mega Mart which has the best prices for Alcohol and if you need anything (suntan lotion, toys or pool stuff for kids, it's like a Target store). For instance, a very very nice bottle of Don Julio 70 (1942) Tequila it's $47, compared to the absolute best price at any Tequila store is ~$67.
If you booked a swim up room, (adults only) the Rivera side of the resort will get the later sun more as the shadow from the building will grow over the Sunset side.
The sports bar has all major events on as well as hockey, soccer or whatever.
The Kids club is awesome, It's all in-closed on the Riviera side, they have their own little beach chairs, pool, play equipment, very safe, and the staff is awesome with them.
I've attached a resort map which outlines room #'s and restaurant locations.
Overall I would go back but will try somewhere different, overall we still prefer the Iberostar chain but this I would rank just a notch or so below.

We actually were here back in October 2010 but I cant forget what a wonderful trip this was and I want to go back. We were a group of 6, 2 newlyweds, 2 single ladies and my partner and I. The first 4 did the swim up rooms and we had the Platinum suite upgrade. We had a few small problems like a room that smelled like stale cigarettes but we were moved no problem, the front desk people were not friendly and the steak house restaurant was the worst meal of the vacation. The DJ in the night club was terrible. The music was bad. People would make requests for better but he would only play about 30 seconds of the song you wanted and went back to playing crap. The rest of the holiday was perfect. The beach is stunning. The pools are lovely, big and fun. The grounds are perfect, picturesque and calming. In some reviews people complain that the resort is too big and it is too far to walk. Really? It is a 10 to 15 min walk from the beach to the lobby on the other side. The walk was our main exercise for the week and the grounds are so beautiful that the walk was enjoyable and calming. For the lazy, rushed or physically challenged there is a little shuttle bus that can take you back and forth. The idea of buffets scared me but food was delicious, hot and lots of options. The rooms are large and clean. The Platinum upgrade was worthwhile. The platinum lounge had a small pool, limited bar and snacks and internet.
The resort should be called Grand Sunrise because each morning we went to the beach and watched the sun come up out of the Caribbean Sea.
We did a short day trip to Playa del Carmen (15 min drive), We rented a car and driver and went to the Mayan archaeological sites of Coba and Tulum. Well worth the trip.
Tips: Sunscreen- the sun is hot and white burns. Bug spray- sand flees on the beach after sunset. Beach towels- Do NOT hold chairs. It is rude and if you lose them, you have to pay for them.

First this is a good place to stay on the "Adults section" The Grand Yucatan Princess Suites... This hotel is very well maintain and the room on that section have Jacuzzi in room's and was very quite, exterior view not the garden one. There's Pools right beside all buildings (Swim out) for the first floor. Pools everywhere 19 in total. It's a very big resort so you have to walk, mini transport for your comfort to. Decoration is nice, the rooms are equipped with good furniture. take the second and third floor for the view++. Personals are quite and polite. The food is respectable with variety and not a pound of salt by pound of food. the beach is "adults" again (41) beside Beach bar otherwise... you like the crowd. To enter the water there is rock so careful, bring water shoes, It's not Cuba but still white sandy beach on the ocean. The beach snack is very good and the day cafeteria are near the beach, (17) snack sunset and (18) snack Riviera. At night (2) Bar plaza is outside they have live band and (22) the theater inside cool air.
Outside it's funny to walk, all kind of Mayan Statute figures. The walk path is beautiful and all trees and plant with water fountain.

From the airport watch for salesman inside, go outside directly to see your travel agent, take your card and forget about those shark inside, at the hotel they have all the facilities to rent or buy a adventure. Be wise don't take the Bus put 40/50$ and go to the hotel directly.

The taxi are federate and the price are already fix. Not in the street, you will save money. For Playa Del Carmen it's 10$ or the bus go there twice a day for free.

Room Tip: With $ go Grand Yucatan Princess Suites "adults". Platinum Riviera and Platinum Sunset. Th...

My Husband and I are at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort for our Son's wedding. We had some concerns, bearing in mind that the usual resort we stay at is also classed as a 5-star resort, but costs several thousand dollars more per week than this one does. We have been quite pleasantly surprised at our experience here, and in general, in a good way. The resort is probably the cleanest place we've ever been...there is a team of people working 24/7 it seems...everywhere is immaculate; the suites, the public areas and bathrooms, the beach and the gardens. The staff are to be highly commended for this. The staff are friendly and accommodating; my only observation would be that more are needed in the restaurants...maybe it's getting harder to find people to work as wait staff, who speak English. However, they all seem to be doing their best to cope with the shortage of people.
My biggest concern/issue is with the food itself...I accept that this is a big hotel, and therefore is catering to the masses, who perhaps, prefer buffet meals, which we do not. There are plenty of themed a la carte restaurants here, all requiring reservations, which it seems can be difficult to come by. The quality of what is being offered isn't, in my book, of 5-star standard...cheap cuts of meat, lots of carbohydrates (breads by the dozen to fill you up) and mass-produced desserts.
If food isn't high on your list of priorities for your vacation, then this will not be an issue for you...there's certainly no shortage of it. If however, you prefer restaurants and meals with a little more thought and finesse, then you too, might feel that this hotel offers something short of its 5-star rating.
If having a room with a specific bed configuration is important to you, you might have to fight to get what you actually want. Our ocean view platinum suite, came with two double beds, and nothing we could say was going to change that! Another of our party booked a basic junior suite and was put in one if the top-of-the-line villa accommodations!!
There is an extensive program of daily entertainments, and evening shows. We found that with the sheer volume of people, that all the restaurants, bars and public areas were incredibly noisy...be prepared to shout!!
All in all, there's lots to do here, the staff are doing their best to cater to everyone's requirements, and if you're not overly picky about your meals, you probably won't be dissatisfied here.

Room Tip: Book a platinum suite...gives you access to all restaurants and the ability to make dinner reservati...

My husband and I just got married April 11, 2013 at the Grand Sunset Princess. I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. What an amazing, clean, family friendly resort. Our wedding was stunning, it was super simple to organize and our wedding coordinator Pilar from the resort took care of all the details. We travelled down with a group of 24 (family and friends) and everyone had an amazing time. It is a resort that is great for all ages and caters to all. There were approximately 4 weddings everyday so that just goes to show how much they cater to wedding groups. The wedding gazebo is picture perfect, it is so beautiful! The hotel itself is well cared for, the grounds are clean and kept, the maintenance on the buildings is fantastic. The only complaint I would have is the bartenders speed of service, they could use a few more staff. This was our third time travelling to Mexico and I am so glad we choose this resort to hold our wedding. I would recommend it to everyone! I would recommend staying away from Sunwing due to delays, lack of customer service and strict baggage allowances however.

Found staff to be very unfriendly, uninterested, and unhelpful in all areas - bars, restaurants, front end etc. Food quality was very poor and always the same - breakfast, lunch and dinner! Only had one good meal (Miso restaurant) in 7 days! The food was way below expectations. The customer service was also lacking in all areas and it was almost impossible to get any information from any of the staff (most did not speak English). We were given a letter telling us about a "special" dinner and that the dress code was casual formal. We got dressed up and when we went to dinner it was the same "crappy" buffet and people were in shorts and tank tops at best! The next day the steak restaurant refused my husband entry until he changed to long pants!!!! The only good thing we found at this resort was the beach. It was beautiful but again it was very crowded and extremely hard to get a chair (even if they are very uncomfortable) after 9 am. I would never recommend this resort to anyone. It was so disappointing for our very first "all inclusive" vacation.

Room Tip: I would never book this resort again
