A lot of the time when you travel you ask about restaurants only to be given some of the tourist traps. We tend to shy away from such things since they can be nice, friendly staff but often the food is geared towards tourists. We decided to take a look at El Fogon after looking at some reviews. It was certainly not a tourist restaurant and they definitely had the best guacamole we?ve ever had.
The staff was very polite and friendly, helping us order and making sure we had everything we needed. I have a feeling it might be a little crowded and overheated during the summer months, since it did not seem they had air conditioning. For October it was comfortable. You can find this restaurant just off of 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen.
We started out with a plate of guacamole and chips, before moving on to burritos, enchiladas, and fish tacos among our group of four. The sauce on the enchiladas was a little spicy, but definitely a good flavor. The best part of it all was the inexpensive prices for this restaurant. Unlike tourist traps this was affordable enough for the locals.
