“Average, massive and”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We visited Grand Rivera Princess August 15-August 21. First of all, this place is massive. If you don’t like to walk, this is not the place for you. They say that they have shuttles every 15 minutes but unless you are staying in the Platinum Suites, I did not see this to be the case. Checking in went quickly, however we tipped $40 for fans to be put in our rooms and that never happened. We had 10 people in our group, 3 Platinum rooms and 2 Swim ups. I saw very few advantages to the Platinum rooms. Here is what I found that they were. Free Wi-Fi, Free 24 hour room service (takes an hour at least) and we had our own little bar/pool area, along with the shuttle being more reliable. The rooms were fine, smell was a little offsetting. We had 5 rooms and every single room the furniture was stained or falling apart. Nothing looked 5 star at all. The “hot tub” on the deck was disgusting and the tub in the room wasn’t far behind. I didn’t see any upgrade or advantage to the Platinum room versus the swim up room. The swim up room was so convenient however the steps and sitting area in the water were pretty grimy. The proximity was great to the pool bar, however if you do not want to hear music at 8:00 am make sure you ask for a room located further away from the bars. The food was average. The smell in one of the buffet restaurants was horrendous. You would see people plugging their nose walking in and out. The only All-inclusive restaurant that stood out was the Italian, Mama Mia. The best part of the resort is not included, the Chill Out. We had three lunches and 1 dinner there. The food was above average, but better than everything else. The view and the atmosphere were worth spending the extra money. During the day, the drinks are included if you eat. It is insane and frustrating that you spend all this money and you have to tip and beg in order to get a reservation at anything but the buffet. This part was horrible. Finally we stopped making reservations and just went to the restaurants and slipped the host $20 and got in right away. This whole practice seems really ridiculous and one of the reasons I would never come back to this resort. This is truly a family resort. If you do not want kids doing cannonballs and screaming, this is not the resort for you. If you have children, this would be a nice option. Overall the beach was nice, the pools were nice, not much to do at night, but they do have a sports bar that is open but be prepared for children to be in there after hours as well. In reading the reviews before we went, I think people that rated this resort a 3/5 were pretty dead on. Everything was pretty average. If you want luxury, this is not the spot for you. THIS IS NOT A 5 STAR RESORT BY ANY MEANS!!! In America I would consider the food to be relatable to lower than an Applebee’s and the rooms to be on par with a Country Inn and Suites. Hope this helps

Stayed here Aug 18-25 with my brother and our spouses. Overall had a good time, but the resort itself was average.

Pros:
-Grounds are immaculately kept and beautiful.
-Staff were excellent. Very friendly and tried their best to help.
-Beach was nice and not too crowded.
-Rooms were clean, but could use a little refresh.
-Check-in and check-out were quick and easy.
-Concierge was helpful, especially Angel.

Cons:
-Food was average. Buffet food gets repetitive, and all the cakes/desserts had a funny consistency. Most of the sauces and some of the alcohol tasted watered down.
-A-la-carte restaurants. Reservation system was annoying, as you could only book 2 days in advance, which meant we had to go back every day to book (we stayed in regular junior suite, not sure if platinum has better reservation system). Also, service at a-la-carte was painfully slow. In particular, at Miso and Mamma Mia, our dinner took 2.5 hours to serve. Teppanyaki show was fun. Nothing special at the grill and swiss fondue restaurant. Ended up having to go to buffet after to top-up our meals, lol.
-Website advertises free non-motorized water sports. When we inquired, they had no boogie boards, no kayaks, no floaties, etc for us to use...ended up buying our own floaties for $8 in Playa.
-My brother tried the rifle and archery activities. Rifle was broken, and they had only one set of bow and arrows for the whole group to use.

Random Tips: If you decide to do Chichen Itza, bring an umbrella! It can get VERY hot! Also, the tour operator will bring you to a souvenir shop, where proceeds supposedly benefit the local mayan people. FYI, the prices of the same souvenirs at Chichen Itza are significantly lower (e.g. 1/4 the price). You can decide if you want to spend more to benefit the locals (hopefully), or save some money by buying at Chichen Itza (we ended up buying some at the local store and some at Chichen Itza). When bargaining price, be prepared to walk away if they refuse your offer. As you walk way, chances are they will come running after you, accepting your price.

we stayed at this resort for our honey from the 19th to the 26th. We had a few complaints. The resort was one of the cleanest resorts we've stayed at but it was almost to a fault. we found the amount of cleaning that took place took away from the resort. They started cleaning the resort very early in the morning with pressure washers and the noise was to much for a resort where people go to rest and relax. There was nothing but yellow cones about everywhere warning you to be careful and not slip...the amount of staff cleaning was too much. We also found that the maids how worked in our section room 6044 where very inconsiderate and loud talking and laughing very early waking us up everyday before we wanted to be woken...around 8am. We came to this resort to not have to be up early and rest after having our wedding. we also found the pools closed to early and would have like to have atleast 1 pool for adults open past 8. we also found the beach area dirty and didn't offer anything. it would be nice to have some options on the beach like maybe a nights where you can dance on the beach at night or drinks at night...there was nothing ever going on at the beach other then loungers and pushy vendors . the food was average nothing special but the staff was great. we are in our 30's so the resort didn't offer much for night life other then a small disco and a few locations to sit for a drink which where boring. we also found the shuttles into playa not convenient at all and we spent so much on cabs into town. we would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone other then families with kids.

Okay, if you are an adult, spend the extra money and go to the platinum side. The concierge serive is worth it alone. They make reservations for you in advance for three restaurants so you can limit the buffet time (good for the waist line). The adult only side is great but a little quiet , which is okay because you'll really appreciate the platinum area of the beach.
Bring those rubber beach shoe things if you plan on going in the water, there are many sharp rocks.
The spa is great.
All things considered, this is a very nice resort and does not feel as big as it actually is. It is very well maintained and you should have no problems speak of.
(note people! Just because you are on the "adult" side of the resort in an adult only pool doesn't mean you should engage in "adult" activities in the pool. No one wants to see that folks. Really, you're not pornstars and we all need to swim in that pool. yuck)

There are some terrible reviews of this hotel on trip advisor which I’m not sure are really warranted, we went expecting the worst but were pleasantly surprised.

Our room was very spacious and had a huge bed, a sofa and massive bathroom. We had a room on the quiet side of the block, which faced onto a green area, the rooms on the other side of the block faced the main pathway and pools so I think we were lucky as it was quiet. The room was kept impeccably clean during our stay and the mini bar topped up on a daily basis with beer and soft drinks.

The hotel is huge but with 12 pools and 9 restaurants we didn’t really expect any different. It took about 10 minutes to walk from the top of the hotel to the beach, and we were lucky our room was in the middle of the hotel so we were ideally located for everything. We ate in most of the restaurants during our stay, the buffet restaurants are good with a huge variety of foods, each night has a theme, say Italian but you can get the basics like pasta and burgers every night. We also ate in the fondue, the steak house, the oriental, the Mexican and the Italian, all of which were great, with high quality food, the steak house and fondue were our favourites. The booking system was a bit of a pain as you have to go every morning but its worth it for the variety, we went with the view of booking what was available and not specific restaurants. As it was our wedding anniversary while we were there we ate in the Chill Out restaurant which is chargeable but well worth every penny. I had a huge lobster and my husband had a steak which was as big as a dinner plate, we also had two starters and a bottle of wine and it cost us less than £75, which sounds expensive but the quality and size of the portions was above anything you could get in the UK for that price. The only thing I’d say is this restaurant is on the beach, make sure you are armed with mosquito spray as you will get eaten alive!

The bars were well stocked with a huge variety of branded spirits and cocktails, and the beer on tap was Corona, we discovered Icebergs – lager with a frozen margarita floating on top, lush and perfect to cook you down on a hot day! The only thing is in the evening you are limited to the three bars in the main hotel, although the bar staff are quick they do get busy; we thought it would be nice to get away from the main areas to some quieter bars.

There are a large amount of pools to choose from, very quiet ones and party pools, we chose to spend our time in a pool with a bar which was just the right mix we met lots of people round the pool but it was fairly quiet and you could read your book in peace but still get drinks as often as you liked. The party pool was very crowded and loud which isn’t for us but it doesn’t disturb you if you are away from it. The beach was lovely although busy, however the water was clear and the beach was kept clean. On our anniversary we paid £7 to spend the day on the chill out beach which is well worth it, the waiters there couldn’t help enough, we drank champagne all day and relaxed on cushioned sun loungers.

The whole hotel is beautifully kept and spotlessly clean. The gardens were tended to on a daily basis which kept the hotel looking fresh. The only issue we found was the floors indoor and outdoor were very slippery, we saw a number of people with injuries as they’d slipped over, this was heightened by the fact we went in the rainy season, when it did rain you couldn’t run for shelter for fear of slipping! This is a small negative but I would recommend packing some non-slip shoes for the daytime.

The staff in the hotel were fantastic, everyone from the management to waiters to bar staff and cleaners were cheerful and helpful and worked their socks off. We never had an empty glass in front of us or a dirty plate, they really work so hard and have smiles on their faces. The entertainment team were great too, as was the house band, we spent many a happy evening in the band listening to them

A fantastic part of the hotel is the wildlife, there are iguanas all over the place and the hotel as two resident crocodiles – these are fenced off and slightly off the main drag so don’t panic! The best thing was the coatis who were abundant in the hotel, they are used to the hordes of human beings and use this to their advantage, many a time we saw them going into peoples bags left by the poolside hunting for food, they seem harmless and gave us a few giggles, however we were warned not to take food out of the restaurants and this seems to be why, we heeded this advice and were never bothered by them.

All in all we had a wonderful stay at the Grand Rivera Princess, it lived up to its 5 star reputation and not the bad reputation it seems to have gained on Trip Advisor

Room Tip: Get a room facing away from the main walkway and pools, it'll be quieter and a lot more private

Firstly id like to say I dont know where all the bad reviewers stayed because it certainly wasnt at this hotel.

We got married here sat 17th august and from the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out it was amazing.

The staff were always friendly. Our room was checked twice a day for cleaning and fresh towels. The food was great with lots of variety even with a 3yr old that ate most of the choices of meals everyday. 5th avenue is just a free shuttle away and was great.

Overall this is an amazing hotel and our wedding day we wouldnt change a thing. Ignore the bad, fussy, rude reviews

1st hotel we have stayed in that was the full 5 it stated. The food was perfect, entertainment was good and varied, staff polite and friendly. Perfect location, beach was beautiful with alsorts of wildlife that come and sit right beside you. There are signs around the beach to warn you of crocodiles lurking, we didn't see them on the beach but they are in the pond near the beach bar/restaurant. Iguanas and lizards everywhere just a gorgeous setting day and night. Beach activites from paddling around to paragliding and a James Bond type jet pack which blasts/hovers you above the water and depending on your leg strength can go very high. Bedrooms were perfect, cleaned daily to high standards, no problems with anything, can not comment more on how pleased we are to have stayed at such a beautiful hotel. would definitely go again, perfect for weddings-which we got to see on the beach, and also honeymoons, I hear they have amazing packages if you are to go on your honey moon there, upgrades etc. The location itself was perfectly fine for us, it is a little out of the way but for your trips, transport is included, if you want to visit places for shopping etc, you can either walk a mile out up to the main road and flag down passing mini buses which has other tourist and locals on, this is about 3$ Mexican, hire a car or use the taxi rank located in the lobby which is soley the hotels guests. the hotel is on such a large scale, it can be warm and tiring to get from one end to the other or room to restaurants, they have a little train which is driven through all room locations, along the gardens and upto the beaches etc, this is free and the driver is friendly and hilarious. def worth a trip.
