This was my second stay in Mexico. I was here with my husband and with friends. Since I already knew Mexico, I was not surprised, just happy again and decided to return. Hotel is nice, but unfortunately Velna huge. If we wanted to get to the front desk, so we took a walk and 10 minutes. Although he rode regularly train, but ... the room was amazing, because we had apartment. I recommend this hotel to young people who want to have fun in the evening and during the day to rest. I have to pick up a great massage on the beach for a reasonable price. Worse it was with intrusive photographers who offer you the option taken by an either solo or with any pet. The problem arose when paying. 10 amateur photos you asking $ 150 ... :-( (

I got back on Friday from a 1 week stay at this resort. On first impressions the hotel is absolutely beautiful! The landscaping it out of this world and the hotel is maintained to an excellent standard. The only negatives I can point out are that the pool areas got quite noisy through the day. The bars were always busy and on occasions I waited as long as 20 minutes at the bar for a drink. The wi fi was not included in the price of the room, you have to be a premium guest or pay $20 per day or $70 for the week. The complex itself is large so not advisable for those who have difficulty walking. On the whole most of the staff were extremely attentive and we met some lovely people. The people were very friendly and we met some people we will stay in touch with. Mostly American and Canadian guests so as English we got quite a lot of attention from people over hearing our accents. The drop off and pick ups were efficient and easy and the whole holiday was made very easy by the Thomson staff, who we went with. There were lots of trips on offer as well as lots of different restaurants, bars and pools, you couldnt even do one a day if you went for a week there were so many. If you are going have a great time and if you are thinking of going go ahead and see for yourself, you will have an excellent holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the hammocks were quiet, we were in room 7127.

Overall good holiday. Something for everyone. Was really enjoying our two week holiday until the last week. Some one ' a cleaner round the pool' went through my bag that I had left on the sun bed for 15 minutes while we went into the pool to get a drink. We asked the people that sat next to us who went near our beds and they said the cleaners had been hanging around our bed. 100% possitive it was the cleaner! Both mine and my partners I pods were stollen. I went straight to security and told them who I thought it was, there was no sense of urgency, if they had acted faster they could have searched the scum bag that thinks its ok to steal! It's not like I can swim in the pool with my bags. You expect good security at a 5* hotel.
Really took the gloss off what could have been a great time.
Now hundreds of pounds out of pocket from stollen I pods!

we are returning from a two week holiday at this resort. we had a wonderful time and want to take a minute to highlight some special employees who go beyond the call of duty. if you are fortunate enough to stay in the Platinum room, you are sure to meet Oscar who will look after your every need. Such a kind and professional concierge! this is resort offers great a la carte restaurants. One of the best ones is Mamma Mia, an Italian place, the best waiter by far is Victor, ask to be in his section, he is one of the best waiters we have met. We also spent many, many hours on the beach, we loved the service and attention that Yara provided. She remembered our favorite drink and always had a smiling face. A big shout out goes to Guatalupe who works at various bars!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go Platinum

Not sure whats with the bad reviews we read....This hotel exceeded my expectations. I was very pleased with our entire stay! Don't listen to the bad reviews. Seems like some people just do a lot of complaining over things I didn’t find to be an issues. Yes, the resort is HUGE but I enjoyed the 10-15 minute walk across the property. How bad is a little exercise while on vacation and over indulging on food and drinks?!? I will say though, if you have trouble getting around, this is NOT the resort for you.

Room - Jr. Deluxe (regular room) Suite was gorgeous. We stayed in the 7000 building and found the location to be perfectly located in the middle of the resort between the lobby and the beach. Bathroom is spacious and true luxury. Pillows are a little small and strange but I slept well my entire stay.

Food - The buffet was good. I mean, yes, it’s a buffet so its not 5 star cuisine. If you can’t find something to eat at the buffet...you probably are pretty hard to please and all inclusive may not be for you! The a la carte restaurants were always great. In this order we enjoyed our meals at the hibachi, Italian, miso (Chinese), Mexican and fondue restaurants. It is a bit annoying how you have to stand in line to make a reservation but we had a reservation for each night between the times of 6:45 - 9:40. We found out we actually preferred the later reservations so we could stay on the beach until 5 then shower and have a drink at the plaza bar before dinner.

Beach - Beautiful. Water is like bath water and really enjoyable to swim in. Never saw the rocks some people complain about and never once had a problem getting a cabana on the beach. We arrived each day between 9:30 - 10 and always got a prime spot with shade. The only down side of the beach is the super annoying vendors. They aren’t pushy; they just approach you over and over and over. Expect to be asked if you want a massage no less than 10-20 times per day at the beach. By the end of the vacation I was pretty much rude to them and found they didn’t approach me as much.

Pools - Looked nice but spent each day at the beach. The pools are huge and many connected. Seemed to be more of a rowdy crowd at the pools.

Drinks - Were great. Didn’t find them to be weak and never waited more than a minute or two to get a drink.

Check In- Takes a LONG time. After traveling all day, just wanted to be in our room and had to wait like 30 - 45 minutes to check in. The line seems to move slowly and when you get up to the front to check in, they don’t tell you too much. Not sure what takes them so long.

Excursion - We scheduled an excursion at the hut on the beach (not affiliated with hotel) and took a catamaran from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. It was the best day of the trip and well worth it!

Room Tip: We stayed in Building 7 - it was right in the middle of the hotel. Perfect location between the bea...

This review is based on our recent stay.
We booked with First Choice/Thomson Holidays about 8 months ago. The flights from Gatwick were on time. However, there were a couple of issues that should have been improved. The in flight entertainment was faulty on the way out and kept having to be reset. It did not bother us as we took an iPad with films etc on it. However as the flight was long haul (10 hours 40 mins to Cancun) and was causing frustration with other passengers. Thomson also charge for food and drink - £6 for a tea and hot chocolate - surely this could be included as per other airlines? This other issue was that the cabin crew did not have any Mexician immigration cards on board for landing - this was inefficient and very poor. This meant that when we landed we had to complete the forms standing in a queue before being allowed through immigration - this caused unnecessary problems and surely Thomson should have known. ( we had read that it had happened before so they should have been prepared) . You will need to complete the immigration forms in BLACK ink otherwise you will not be permitted to go through - another tip Thomson did not tell you about.
Once we got through immigration and customs (another card to be completed) we found the Thomson rep easy and was shown onto coach. As this was a platinum hotel we were the 2nd drop off (as advertised).
After half an hour we arrived a the hotel. It was very impressive. We were greeted by aggressive and rude reception staff - one young male was particularly rude. We had asked for an upgrade to platinum and he thought we were asking for it free which was not the case. Not a good start and this was our first impression of the hotel. After we resolved the issue of the upgrade having paid about £600 for 2 weeks we were shown to our room which was number 5027. We also became aware that the original room that we were offered was in 'Sunset' and not 'Riviera' as advertised by First Choice. Although we did it see the room, I doubt whether it would have been any better that what was advertised and paid for - something to look out for.
The room/suite in the platinum area was very impressive - two spa baths one on the balcony, double sinks and a very large shower. There was a mini bar and tv and DVD - another tip is to take your own DVDs as there are none available!
The room could not be faulted and was 5star. We tipped the maid about £25 in total for the 2 weeks and got towel animals and lots of clean towels throughout. The replacement of the mini bar was hap hazard and it appeared that he would only restock your fridge if you left a tip...... There is also a turn down service which we received on 3 occasions during out 14 night stay - however, this did not bother us.
Upgrading to platinum gave you branded drinks, wifi in room, your own concierge, private pools, dining and beach area. The additional upgrade money was worth it.
The resort is huge, exceptionally well kept and spotlessly clean. The Mexician people (with the exception of the reception staff) were fantastic - they could not do enough for you. Small tips of $1 dollar here and there goes a long way.
The resort is 95% Canadian/US.
The evening entertainment was ok - they tried hard but is was mainly dancing. The restaurants were ok - again they tried hard but never quite hit it off with the food. The best ones were Italian and the Grill - the Japanese Misa was ok but not a place to go for a quiet meal as they was 'show cooking' that involves participation and constant whooping !
Food on the whole at the buffets were good - a good selection. We never once got an upset tummy!
Hector and Samuel the waiters in the platinum buffet were excellent. The younger guy in the platinum concierge was good , the older guy was a little forgetful.
Drinks were good as we got premium brands( being platinum) - the cocktails left an after taste in your mouth so apart from the mudslides we stuck with good rums. The cocktails were ready made in large containers and the bar staff added in the spirits. True 5 star resorts make up from scratch using quality ingredients.
Tips
If you want a quiet place on the beach go to the far left - the middle section was packed and to the right was a chill out zone that you have to pay additional for.
Massages are $25 US dollars for an hour ( if you walk down the beach pass the chill out zone )- do not pay any more - we heard people paying $65 and $50 dollars.
Pay the additional upgrade to platinum which is 5 star ( the resort is basically 4 star)
The shop at the resort is exactly double the amount you will pay if you went into Wal Mart in playa del carmen
Avoid the photographers - particulary the resort ones - they charge $21 dollars per photo - complete rip off. If they had more business sense they could improve the service and at the same time get more people to buy - pure greed and no business acumen.
You will not be disappointed with this resort which is in my opinion a 4star. If you can upgrade to platinum then this is recommended. We will not be returning to this resort basically as we felt it was too big and impersonable. If we do go back to Mexico again then we would look for a smaller hotel.
The transfers from the hotel to the airport was over a hours pick up before we actually headed for the airport - which is not advertised for platinum hotels by First Choice. The drop off was fine in less than 30 minutes - definitely misleading in the brochure.
Don't forget the £45 per person 'exit' fee at the airport which must be paid in cash - little things like this puts us off going back.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for sharing your review and providing us with this valuable feedback.

We are glad to see that there are parts of the Grand Riviera Princess that you quite enjoyed, however allow me tell you that what occurred in the reception is not at all a common situation and in no way represent our overall service.

Indeed, your well being and entire satisfaction is our primary goal.
We know that our staff plays a valuable role in the vacation experience of our guests. We will share your comments with Hector and Samuel; They will be so happy to know that their work were excellent.

It would be a pleasure for us to welcome you back and provide you with a great stay showing that we have improved our service for you.

Me and my husband and 2 other couples stayed at the Grand Sunset/Riveria Princess May 1st to 8th. Its a beautiful, large resort with many amenities. The a la cartes were fabulous, the buffet was decent but you grew tired of it by weeks end. I would have loved to see some more mexican style foods on the buffet. We stayed in the Grand Yucatan Pool Suite, which had hte swim out room and we loved that. It was close to a bar and jetted tub and was far away from the party pool area so it was fairly quite. Some of the furniture could use a refresh but it was fairly nice with modern style theme. The beach was very nice, a little rocky in parts but there was always chairs available in the adults only section of the beach and there was a bar and food close by. It was a bit of a walk from the room to beach but we enjoyed that, there are trolleys that run from the beach area as well. The pools seem to get a bit busy, but service was still pretty good. All the staff was friendly and fairly attentive. The gift shops had anything you could of forgotten but very pricey of course. It would of been nice to see some more nightly entertainment options, if you did not want to hit the disco or catch a mediocre show you were pretty limited. Also the main bars close early at 11 and the only thing remaining open was the Sports Bar which was overly noisy and not very appealing. Also I found that if you did'nt order room service there were no small snacks available other than purchase in the gift shop, which closed at 11 as well. All in all was a beautiful resort for a great price with nice staff.

Room Tip: Platinum side is the way to good, well worth the price of hte upgrade for the little extras they put...
