We had a two month stay at Playa del Carmen, and remained in this location the entire time. The owners are very welcoming and helpful, and when we left we considered them as friends. We are in our 60's, and found it easy to walk to the large grocery store, the beautiful Playa del Carmen beach, and the tourist haven 5th Avenue from this site. Cancun, Akumal, and Tulum are easily reached with a local collectivo (a van service for locals and tourists with extremely reasonable prices) with headquarters in Playa del Carmen a modest walk from the apartment. Xcaret, Xel-Ha, and other entertainment parks are close, and offer a whole day of fun for old and young alike. Mayan temple ruins, jungle tours, and cenotes make a trip to this area unforgettable. We did not require a car unless we planned to go out of town to areas not covered by the collectivo; if you don't want to walk, bicycles are available to borrow from the apartment owners. We loved being in a neighborhood rather than a resort. The experience was so much more authentic, and we enjoyed getting acquainted with neighbors and shopkeepers. Small neighborhood restaurants and food vendors are plentiful: we never became ill from eating local food. Our Pomeranian dog accompanied us, and she was so popular with the locals that everyone knew her name and wanted to take a photo with her. We treasure our time at this location.
