“Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

My extended family spent a week at the Rosewood in May. This is our 8th visit and each one somehow manages to outdo the last. We travel with our parents, our 2 kids, my brother, sister-in-law and their children.

From the moment we arrive, we feel like family at the resort. Many of the same employees greet us every year with a "welcome back!" or "welcome home!". We know so many of them by name and they have seen our family expand over the years.

Once you step on the boat that brings you to your room, you leave the outside world behind and completely escape into paradise. The staff took care of every single request we made and seemed delighted to do it. Truly, when they say "it's a pleasure", they mean it.

The main difference that we noticed this year was that there was a much bigger presence on the beach. Chairs, umbrellas, service...which meant that the pool remained peaceful. There was a wedding at the hotel during our visit, but we never noticed. Our experience was not affected in any way by other events at the hotel.

The breakfast buffet has always been fantastic, but this year they outdid themselves by adding a gluten free area. One of our family members eats a gluten free diet and he was well-taken care of at each meal. In fact, the chef went out of his way to make a special batch of gluten free chocolate chip muffins for us every morning. (which were delicious!!)

For my kids (age 2 and 7), the highlights included feeding the fish, the boat ride, the many activities at the kids club and of course swimming at the pool. Oh, and they were huge fans of the amenities that came around regularly (smoothies, fruit, savory treats, popsicles). Plus, the golf cart rides to each destination were an adventure for them as well.

The rooms are gorgeous. Ours had a plunge pool, three showers (including an outdoor shower), and a huge bathtub. It was immaculate.

The fitness center has been newly expanded and staffed by a knowledgeable and friendly trainer.

Once you stay at the Rosewood, nothing else ever compares. We're already looking forward to our next visit in May.

I still cannot decide whether I prefer the Lagoon Suite or the Beach Suite. Nice problem to have.
Every other question one has as to whether or not this is not the most fabulous resort has been answered. YES IT IS!!!!
My first important observation is have Rosewood Mayakoba arrange the pickup when you book. We were efficiently met planeside and whisked thru the corridors.into an absolutely overflowing immigration hall. UGH I thought. 4 hours to get thru this mess.
No, there was one empty lane for Mexican Nationals (I'm American). Right up to it we were led. Our passports were rapidly stamped and off we skipped to the car. FABULOUS.
Mayakoba is a 600 acre development 50 miles (35 min.) south of Cancun. On it, aside from Rosewood are a Greg Norman golf course (home of Mexico's only PGA event); a Fairmont, a Banyan Tree Resort and a Hyatt being built on the foundation of an abandoned Viceroy.
You would not know anything else exists from Rosewood.
Met at the entrance we were whisked to a small launch and while bring refreshed and checked in taken to the dock of our accommodations.
Last time we had a lagoon unit which let us sit on the deck by our pool watching alligator in the lagoon and listening to the birds in the marshes. Magical.
The Lagoon Unit, all designed by a Spanish architect, was on a single floor and was designed so that it could open from the outdoor shower at one end to the deck over the marshes at the other into a big open airy spacious
This time we were in a second floor beach-side unit which we loved, too.
Frolicking in the roof top plunge pool gazing at the sea or on the balcony watching the palms blow, was mesmerizing. The baths are BIG and ours had a secret garden off the shower.
The beach bar, Punta Bonita,is also a short walk away, though the room service was fast especially for such a spacious property.
And your butler was always available for all other needs. And the golf carts are always passing by to give one a lift anywhere. We were also given 2 bikes to use when we felt energetic.
Punta Bonita is spacious airy and open for lunch and dinner. Fresh tacos with corn tortillas with your feet is my thought of heaven.
I loved the fact that we could eat lightly and inexpensively and in shorts at night at a 5 star resort.
The main restaurant is very good and their breakfast with a Mexican flair are memorable.
But a casual an dinner is, to me, in a class by itself..
Rosewood knows how to run small luxury Hotels. Their Caneel Bay and Little Dix Bay are two of my caribean favorites, and this expertise shows at Mayakoba. The 500 person staff is well trained and friendly and exudes a sense of really appreciating your choosing their resort.
The Spa is so relaxing and the steam and sauna ware so inviting and the massages are not to be missed.
Again the only problems are; which units to chose and why one has not booked for a longer stay.

We visited from London during our daughter's half-term and had a wonderful week. The hotel is an easy 45-minute transfer from Cancun airport down a dead-straight road - and as soon as you enter the Mayakoba resort area you get the sense that you're unlikely to be leaving again until the return airport transfer!

The Mayakoba resort covers a large area with three distinct properties (Rosewood, Banyan Tree and Fairmont) .. you remain blissfully unaware of the other hotels but are able to eat in their restaurants and cross-charge back to your hotel account which adds some nice variety. You can get around between the three hotels, golf course and tennis courts by a very efficient courtesy car or (during daylight hours) a regular ferry service on little electric boats, taking in beautiful scenery and wildlife on the way - it really is quite charming!

The Rosewood itself is (by some margin) the pick of the three hotels. It's simply gorgeous, with the hotel split between two areas: the lagoon and the beach. We stayed in a Deluxe Studio Suite (on the lagoon) which is recommended if you are travelling with one or two children as the sitting room has a fold-out sofa bed (very comfortable) and acts as a separate bedroom for the children - something that you don't get in a Lagoon Studio Suite. That said, all the rooms are beautifully designed with loads of space, their own sizeable plunge pool, lovely bathrooms etc. I imagine there is a significant premium to be paid for staying on the beach, but in many ways the lagoon side of the hotel is preferable as it's an easy walk to the main restaurant for breakfast / the concierge / the boat dock etc.

The service is exceptional. Everybody seems genuinely pleased to see you, greets you by name, and nothing is a problem. Moreover, this is consistent across the hotel: whether in the restaurants, spa, pool, concierge, front desk - wherever! - the staff are simply delightful and are a credit to Rosewood.

I could go on and on about what an outstanding property this is! But quickly: we recommend the breakfasts at Rosewood (superb) and dinner at Saffron at the Banyan Tree (request an outside table). If you play golf, the 'Chameleon' course is long but not taxing and was in great condition. The Rosewood spa is beautiful, relaxing and exceptionally well-equipped. Maybe our only disappointment was that there were not more families there when we visited, but our daughter was well looked-after in the friendly Kids' Club and will always remember spotting an 8' crocodile from our boat on the way to dinner one night!

The hotel is located on the " Mayan Riviera" on a beach AND lagoon. It is next to other luxury hotels, eg. Fairmont.
What makes this hotel special was the friendly staff besides the incredibly beautiful and very spacious rooms AND the outside extra shower AND your own serene rectangular 'plunging pool' AND the different ways to get around ( walk, regularly running golf carts, boats, and or pale blue or green bicycles. Our stay was so special that we never left the property the whole vacation except to walk on the beach bicycle to the Fairmont Hotel next door.
Also, I almost forgot to mention that our room was on a lagoon, that did not face other rooms. In between these separate hotel residences you are shielded by trees and nature. Each room on the lagoon has its own dock. We choose to bicycle around to beach and restaurants.
I especially loved seeing some unique Yucatan birds that visited the trees and decks of our lagoon facing room - the great Kiskadee, snake bird or anhinga, snowy egret, etc... Every Afternoon, sitting outside, one could see these beautiful birds come and go.

The food as pricey, yet good. I would have liked more vegetable choices, but there are good fish choices and everything seems very freshly made and clean. There are always 2 restaurant choices for dinner. Sometimes it is the Japanese restaurant, sometimes the noveau Mexican restaurant facing the beach.

The pools are beautiful, never overcrowded, and there are 2 pool locations. The ocean water is clean, and there is a non obtrusive life guard. The beach area is protected from vendors that one can experience at other non luxury hotel beaches. One drawback for me was that the water is choppy and does not have the ebb and flow of ocean waves that I experience at Atlantic Ocean beaches or Pacific Ocean beaches in Hawaii.

Another plus is good wiFi in the room and good movie selections. The hotel amenities - toiletries, robes, slippers are very good.

I also took the daily morning "Eco tour" that leaves at eleven (?) each day. It is a little boat
Trip that explores the lagoons. We did not see any crocodiles on our journey, but beautiful birds, fishes, turtles, and birds nests. This is free and offered by hotel.

I did experience their spa, which was pricey, but it was very professional, and the steam and dry
Saunas, the plunge pool, the showers, and little pathway walk to the massage room are special.

Also, there was a famous movie and TV actor that I saw during our visit. No one seemed to bother him, nor make a fuss, neither did he recognize us (tic). The Rosewood hotel was just that kind of place - luxury, privacy, great service, good food, quiet relaxation, beautiful spacious accommodations!

Room Tip: You can choose being close to the beach OR to the main lobby where breakfast is served. We choose t...

We had the most relaxing 7 night stay in April. Upon arrival we asked to see an oceanfront room and then paid double (from the room we had booked) to upgrade to it. (#606) It was so close to the water which was our favorite aspect of the stay—being so close to the ocean with a heated pool of our own. We had to move back to the least expensive room type (103) for the last night as they needed the oceanfront room—but even the least expensive room was great too. I posted photos of both.

With limited vacation time and money I always want so much from my trips. And I have to say, RM did not disappoint. It was completely relaxing. The heated plunge pools in all the rooms are one of my favorite things about this resort.

Agave Azul was our favorite restaurant but we enjoyed them all for different reasons. Spa was good but not my favorite overall—but that didn’t stop us from at least 3 visits. Workout room fit our needs. We got bikes a few days into our stay after asking a second time. Riding around on them was heaven.

Our least favorite aspect was not the all the children around as I had expected. But the last few days, a large wedding came in along with a business group and the resort felt way too small to sustain all this peacefully. I’m glad we got to unwind and experience the peace before the chaos erupted. They closed down the only oceanfront restaurant one night for the wedding and there were days of service vehicles (atvs) and huge equipment on the once peaceful paths, etc. Before that, we did feel like we fell through the cracks several times with service issues although the employees do a great job of being friendly. Also, our oceanfront room was one of the best I’ve stayed in due to its proximity to the water and heated pool. However, there was constant traffic on the beach in front of our room from neighboring resorts especially. Many times people actually used our private chairs and left their trash! We did feel like timeshare reps fielding questions from all the passersby on the name of the resort, cost of the room ,etc. while sitting in our room.

Overall i'd completely recommend without hesitation!

Room Tip: For us oceanfront was hands down the winner based on views and ocean sounds, but it would not offer...

The Rosewood Mayakoba is a lovely resort, the suites impeccable and the environment beautiful. We had a beach front villa and really enjoyed being right on the beach and our little pool. The service is personal and still respectful. However, considering how much the charge it just seems as it is it should be. A few flaws however: we were on the waiting list for bikes for 4 days and got them our last day. The view from the gym is very dull compared to what it could have been. They have the guts to charge extra for gym classses, which I think is absolutely ridiculous when you pay $1500+ a night. A beautiful place but I think you get more for your money elsewhere.
