Small hotel, nice beach, decent food, friendly and helpful staff. Perfect for our family who wanted to lie on a beach, read books, walk on the beach and go for a swim to cool off. The front desk was helpful, gave some good advice about renting a car to go to Coba instead of a cab or a tour van and arranged for the drop off and pick up of the rental car at the hotel. We used PDC transfers to and from the airport and spent the extra $30 for an hour at the Mega store in Playa on the way in. I highly recommend this as we stocked up on beverages, snacks, lunch food and suntan lotion before we checked in. We spent a morning in Playa one day and did the 1.5 hr beach walk to Playa on another as our only other excursions during a 10 day stay. Otherwise we were on the beach in front of the hotel from sunup to sundown. If you want to get a palapa for the day better hit the beach before 6am. However, on the last couple days the staff was putting beach umbrellas out for people so I think all you have to do is ask if you want one. The noise from the bar after dinner was loud enough that we had to close the door to the balcony of our third floor room to go to sleep but the bar shut down around 11pm so it was no big deal. People are entitled to relax, have a drink and some conversation after dinner, in my view. They're on vacation. All in all a wonderful vacation in a beautiful place. We'd all go back again.

Dear CRB,

Thank you very much for selecting Petit Lafitte for your Mexico vacation. We are glad to hear that all in all you had a very enjoyable vacation with your family and that you visited Coba and Playa del Carmen, even when you were mostly looking to enjoy the beach and basking in the sun.

We hope that you keep us in your hearts and minds for a future visit in Riviera Maya.

Thank you again for your preference and for your review!

Kind Regards,

Iván Fuentes

Upon check in, hot from the airport in regular clothes, after driving up a rocky, unpaved road, standing in the little "lobby," you see the little wooden statue of the pirate, and you are like, "What is this, Disneyland? Oh no, maybe it's too kid friendly..." But then you walk straight through, and in ONE minute, you are ON a white sugar sand beach, with turquoise water. Nobody else around, just palm trees ad hammocks, and you drop into one of them and don't want to leave or go anywhere for days. Attentive, unobtrusive service - the staff know you by your room number. Delicious, healthy food, with breakfast and dinner included, and great optional lunch selections at the beach (and pool)-side bar. Reasonable prices for rooms AND all extras, including drinks.

The kind of place you want to return to annually; I'm already looking at dates and airfares for next year!

Hi RuthM,

Thank you for talking about the fact that even though the place is named after a legendary, real life pirate of the early 1800s, and that there is a small wooden sculpture of him art the lobby, Petit Lafitte, is not especially designed for children, but we are open to travelers of all ages and walks of life, seeking tranquility and relaxation, amidst swaying palm trees and a sandy beach with turquoise waters. Your comments about the service and the atmosphere are very kind.

Thank you for your visit and for your hinted intention of returning, hope it becomes a reality.

Yours

Wow! After looking at all the huge, "cruise ship on the beach" all inclusive resorts in Playa, I tripped over this place. What a great hotel in every way!

The pictures that it was right on the beach and small, plus Tripadvisor reviews was enough to get me to book through Expedia.

Highlights: The rustling palms and crashing ocean surf at night on our second floor room, the sugar sand beach, the privacy with no one selling us stuff there, interesting fellow travelers, and breakfast and dinner INCLUDED for the price. And the food was 4-5 stars. Great, friendly staff. Unbelievable.

I feel so fortunate we found this place among hundreds of overpriced, overdone resorts.

If I want to stand in line at a cruise ship buffet, I'll take a cruise. If I want to vacation in Playa with my wife, I'll stay at Petit Lafitte.

Great job!

Dear Tigershark6,

Thank you for choosing Petit Lafitte for your vacation with your wife. Your comments about how much you prefer this over to large all inclusive hotels is like music to our ears. Also to see that the synergy with Tripadvisor and expedia works wonders for everyone involved, including you and the hotel!! We feel fortunate to have had you visit and for your poetic words to describe the ambiance, sugar sand and rustling palms! Nice!

Take care amigo and have many more lovely traveling experiences and hopefully a happy return to our shores.

Sincerely,

I. Fuentes

I stayed at the Petit Lafitte March 5-9 for a girls' get-away and all we wanted was a beautiful beach, massages and good food and drinks. Petit Lafitte delivered. It's very small (30 rooms, 20 cottages) and there was no nightlife, save for a drink after dinner at the beach bar if you wanted. And that was fine by us - we needed a rest! Having stayed at Mahekal last year, I found the food at Petit Lafitte much better - probably b/c they are cooking for 50-100 people instead of 400 people.Breakfast was excellent (fresh fruit, whatever cooked dishes you might want), lunch was the best (fish tacos! shrimp tacos! chicken sopes!) and dinner was good. Two entree choices per night. Don't bother with the desserts (ask if they have coconut ice cream). No spa, but two ladies on the beach do awesome massages, on tables under a tree or a palapa ($80 for the two of us, for an hour!) You need to pay them cash (cannot charge to room) - US dollars are fine. Rooms are very basic, could use a little updating, but they're fine (you're not in there too much; most room time was spent on balcony.) Took a taxi into town one night for dinner - really fun (15-20 minutes). Our trip was capped by an AWESOME folk dance performance on the beach, representing all the ancient Mexican cultures - phenomenal! Good, friendly mix of other guests; some oldies, some young couples, a couple families, other girlfriend duos. I'd go back - it was perfect for four whole days. Longer than that, I might get bored or go on a day excursion somewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for third floor for best view of entire resort. (People said the cottages were a little dark ins...

Hola LizB,

We hope your return " From the Land of The Maya to your sweet home Chicago” was a good one. We are glad to hear that your girls trip away, was a complete success and that you found the rest and relaxation you were looking for. We are happy about your comment comparing Lafitte with one of our neighbors. They are good friends as well, and we’re trying to grow together. You are right, trying to serve more than 100 guests changes the name of the game and the capability of using fresh. We will keep it simple and small. Fair to add that even though we do not have a “spa” per se, we do have a list of spa services available that range from massage to facials and manicures, provides in the little beach palapa hut.

Thank you so much for trying us and for taking the time to write!
I have the feeling that we will meet again, as you seem to be a frequent visitor to Riviera Maya.

Best Regards,

Ivan Fuentes.

I went here with a bunch of my friends for my friends wedding. The staff and the service is outstanding. The staff was so friendly and never looked like they were in a bad mood. Location was perfect. Right on the beach with beach chairs and umbrellas. Food was outstanding I am still craving the mangos, chips, and chicken sopas. Would definitely come back

Dear Elyse16,

You forgot to mention, (maybe because your engagement happened a bit after this review was written) that would definitely consider it as a wedding venue!! I am so thrilled that we are already talking about your wedding and planning it for the spring of 2015. Thank you to L&J for inviting you to their wedding as it opened the door for us.

Thank you for your comments and talk to you soon!!

Perfect hotel for my husband and myself on our first trip to Playa del Carmen. We will definitely be returning to Petit!! If you are looking for a hotel where the bar is open until 2am and there is partying and dancing going on all hours of the night, this is not the hotel for you. This is a hotel to go and get away and relax on a beautiful beach with peace and quiet. All of the other reviews pretty much cover what Petit is about, so I will not repeat everything but highlight what we loved and what they could improve.
The staff was great! They were all friendly and David could help you schedule any tour that you wanted and we loved Jesus at the bar and Javier on the dining staff.
The food was excellent and was on par with any 4 star hotel. Breakfast and Dinner are included in your hotel price. Breakfast was served from 7-9:30am and included fresh tropical fruit, pastries, cereal, and a hot menu with about 10 different choices. The banana pancakes were excellent and ask for an egg taco with chorizo and cheese. It's not on the menu, but OH SO YUMMY! Dinner was served between 7-9:30pm and there were normally a choice of 2 entrees then soup, salad, and desert served buffet style. A couple of the nights they served dinner buffet style and it was very delicious. They offer a good sized menu for lunch at a nominal cost and always provide free chips and salsa.
We stayed in Bungalow #4 which is considered an ocean view bungalow. 1,2, and 10 are considered ocean front. I don't think I would pay the extra $ per night just to stay a couple feet closer to the water. We were perfectly happy with the view from ours. We sat on the deck and would enjoy our ocean views. The bungalows do not have TV, but that did not bother us at all! We kept up on news and such on our Ipad. They have free WIFI and it worked most of the time (even on the beach).
We loved that it wasn't very crowded! Never had to wait for a table, never had to search for a beach chair or get up really early to "save" one.
We rented a car because we wanted to be able to explore and go into town (5th Ave) whenever we wanted. Not sure how much the cab fair would have been to 5th Ave, but I would imagine about $30 round trip. The hotel is about 15 minutes from downtown.
The hotel pays attention to little details. There is always someone out first thing in the morning picking up the coconuts that have fallen or trimming trees or picking up the beach. Housekeeping makes little animals out of your towels.
The only negative comment that we have is the breakfast menus needed to be cleaned and the the hotel could use a little facelift from the front. Once you pass through the lobby though, you are transported into paradise!
Loved Petit and will definitely return!!!!

Room Tip: Loved the bungalows and numbers 1-5 and 9-12 are closet the the beach.

Dear Katie H,

Thank you for choosing Petit Lafitte for your lover’s escapade. Thank you for writing such a nice review and commenting on the staff’s service, food and ambiance, and more so, for your promise to return. What else can one aspire to?

It makes paying attention to details worth it all the way!

We are working on the design of the new menus and of course we will face lift the entrance and façade.

Have a wonderful rest of Spring and Summer.
See you next year?

Small, quiet resort with very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful grounds, very nice menu, fresh fruit & veggies, lots of food choices. First time we had a room, this time a bungalow. Both are very nice. The bar is small but pleasant and friendly and Jesus & Victor will make any drink you want. There is a very cool bird sanctuary right on the grounds. There is a Mayan dance show, sometimes additional shows. If you like a quiet, relaxing and comfortable place, this is for you.

Hola Diane L,

So for your second visit you decided to try something different and went for the Bungalow? GREAT!! You liked them?? Awesome!! That says a lot about your personality and ability to enjoy and adapt. Thank you for your nice comments on service, bar drinks and staff and entertainment. We are glad you thought there is very good food variety. Fair to add that in our two week rotation menu, entrees nor soups repeat. So I guess we call that variety.
Thank you for trying us again and for taking time of your day to write a review.
Lots of health, love and happy travels!
