My wife and I stayed in a bungalow for five nights and were very pleased with Petit. From the moment we arrived the service was top notch. David is the leader and he takes charge to make sure you are completely satisfied.

Our bungalow was an "ocean view" and after reviewing all bungalow locations we determined that the "ocean view" was best for us. "Ocean Front" are a few feet closer to ocean but we didn't feel that it would be worth the upgrade of approximately $50/day. On the other hand we did like to view the water while reading out on front porch and thus glad we opted to do the "ocean view" upgrade.

The food was excellent. Breakfast options never got old. Great fresh squeezed juices, traditional breakfast dishes, and authentic Mexican dishes were all tasty. Lunch was affordable and amazing. Dinner options were limited to two entres per evening but this allows chefs to focus on perfecting their offerings. We felt like the food was better than other all inclusives chains we have stayed at including Paradisus and Sandals. We did not have anything but top notch service from all waiters.

Beach walks every day for excercise allowed us to explore area and we did feel that petit's beachfront was the best. The beach bar serves great drinks. The mango daiquiri went down too easy. Also the margaritas were excellent. All drinks are extremely affordable which is great since they are not included in the hotel package. They run a tab for your room and at checkout you see the damage. It was less than we thought!

We'll be back!

Overall we loved it and plan to come back next year and bring the little ones. As for this trip it was a nice romantic getaway.

Room Tip: Recommend the bungalows. We thought the "ocean view" was best option.

Dear AndyandChris,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review for Petit Lafitte. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your romantic escapade with your wife. Specially your comments about the food, and your opinion of it being better than the one found at the all inclusives. I can tell you that one of the main factors for that is freshness. We buy smaller amounts from local vendors who sell fresh. Normally All inclusive hotels can’t afford to do that, they usually have huge walk-in freezers where they can store very large amounts of meats (buying bulk and paying less is the name of their game)… Being a small hotel, means buying less and maybe a bit more expensive, but the quality is worth it.

We truly hope that your idea of coming back for a second time around, now with your kids, becomes a reality soon!

You know where your little “relaxing paradise” is now.

Your truly,

I. Fuentes.

We chose this property based on the tripadvisor reviews. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and accomodating. We chose to stay in the bungalows which were very close to the beach and literally on the sand That part was nice but for what we paid I would not do so again. The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, the shower had no water pressure. Part of the cost was the food which was breakfast and supper. We ate supper 2 times becasue the other times it was just not good. We ate breakfast 2 times also and it was ok. I would stay somewhere else next time.

Dear 1soonfan13,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and the readers. We realize there are things that you really liked and others that you did not like. Thank you for your kind comments on the staff’s attitude, location on the beach and nice bungalows. We are sorry that you did not tell our concierge or any of the friendly staff about your bed being hard and uncomfortable, a lot has been said about beds, and we have realized that it is easier to have firmer beds and then adjust if necessary instead of the opposite. (We found it a lot harder to make a soft bed harder). The key in a small intimate resort like ours is communication and our staff is open and friendly to the point that everyone should feel very comfortable addressing situations like the one you describe regarding beds. Now as far as the food, we would love to know more details about those things that you did not like, for instance, freshness? texture? portions? presentation? variety? Definitely it saddens us when a guests leaves with that taste in their mouth, the one of not wanting to comeback, and we care enough to be interested in the reasons and the details.

Feel free to write to us with more details, at one of the addresses provided here on Trip Advisor or our web page.

We respect your opinion and wish you more satisfying experiences in your future travels.

Sincerely,

Iván Fuentes

Petit Lafitte was a great location for a casual relaxing beach vacation. It was nice to stay in someplace small and intimate instead of some sprawling resort. Things are convenient and well-maintained, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The beach location is great, plenty of places to lounge, and really enjoyed the beach bar. We stayed in an ocean view bungalow, and really liked it alot. Out your door and in the sand, just steps to the water. Overall food was good. Didn't wear shoes for 4 days straight, even to dinner! Truly relaxing.

Dear Paul R,

Thank you for choosing Petit Lafitte for your Mexican Caribbean vacation. We are very happy to hear that you liked this vacation style as opposed to a vacation in a large resort. Yes, you’re right, when you stay in a smaller property, most facilities are very conveniently located and just a few steps away, no need for a golf cart ride to the beach! We are glad you liked your wooden bungalow with ocean view, and for sure, I was taken by how important it is to not wear shoes in order to achieve true relaxation. That is exactly what I personally thought years ago when I first came to work in this area, barefoot paradise!!

Have a great rest of the year and enjoy your future travels!

Just spent 5 days at Petit Lafitte with my family.
If you are looking for a totally relaxing vacation pack your flip flops and some very casual clothes and spend a few days at this sweet little spot.
The staff are the best and go out of their way to take care of you.
Breakfast is amazing, lots of fresh squeezed juice and huge platters of fresh fruit with plenty of cooked breakfast items to choose from. We enjoyed having a drink at the bar right on the beach before dinner. Dinner is good and there is sometimes excellent live entertainment. Rooms are clean and comfy. The beach is amazing!

Dear Ev60,

Greetings to Pompano beach, so, you live near a beautiful beach spot as well, huh? That is nice and of course it is nice to hear that our little hidden spot on the north of Playa del Carmen, was a very enjoyable stretch of beach even for you! Thank you for sharing your positive comments with TripAdvisor readers and for your commendations.
We hope you come back someday, after all, we’re very close to Florida!

Best wishes and happy travels!

PL is the perfect vacation spot if you're in the mood for a beautiful setting in a small adorable hotel with a magnificent beach. Pool area is nice but it's the location of this charmer that makes it totally worth it. As mentioned in previous reviews, the inclusive breakfasts and dinners are GOOD, the beach bar is great for drinks and very reasonably priced as well as for lunch or a snack, service is very good and the overall feeling is very relaxed and unpretentious - never have to wear shoes, sandals etc., even to meals.
We stayed in an ocean view bungalow which was basic, rustic, comfortable, smallish bathroom but more than adequate, with shutters that you could leave open to catch the ocean breeze if desired. The landscaping is beautiful with hammocks in front of every other bungalow between palm trees....really very nice. If you wanted one of the sought after palapas on the beach, you had to get up early and play the reserve game, but the hotel would also give you a regular umbrella if you desired. The little beach tables were also a premium so grab one early if you can. The beach is AMAZING!! The ocean directly in front is slightly rocky but 50 feet north and its easy access to a sandy bottom and crystal clear waters. You can walk for miles in either direction past many bigger, all inclusives and find a bunch of beach massage spots along the way, priced from $30 and up for an hour massage. You can also rent jet ski's next door, go parasailing and find all the normal beach activities you might want within a few minutes walk. The one thing that you cant find is any nightlife after dinner sponsored by the hotel. This is not that type of place. Other than having an after dinner drink at the bar, meeting other guests, or sitting on a lounge chair and gazing at the surf and stars - a favorite of ours prior to hitting the room, that's about all the nightlife you're going to find. That being said, you can always take a short ride into PDC - $15 for a 15 min ride each way and have an action packed night. This is a charming hotel in a beautiful setting on a wonderful beach....what more could you ask for other than good weather!!

Room Tip: Bungalows are the way to go....1-3 and 9-11 are the closest to the beach but they all open up to a s...

Just got back from Petit Lafitte and it was perfect. We chose it based on Trip Advisor reviews and we were not disappointed! The property is very cute and well-maintained, the grounds were beautiful. Location is perfect, right on a white, powdery-sand beach, with crystal-blue, warm water. Very cute beach-side bar for drinks and food.

We were pleasantly surprised by the "included" food (breakfast and dinner)- it was much better than expected for something that was included. I was expecting a super basic continental breakfast but in addition to a "bar" with fruit, pastries, juice, yogurt, cereal, etc. you also got to order off of a full breakfast menu. Same with dinner- nice bar of salads, veggies, meats and cheeses as a "starter" before choosing from the 2 nightly menu options (which were also quite good). I was also glad to find out that while lunch is not included in the price, the beach-side bar does still offer a full lunch menu with all kinds of stuff from burgers to AMAZING ceviche! (Another review had given me the impression that there was no lunch offered and you had to trek elsewhere to get lunch- not the case.) Prices on the lunch menu were average- comparable to what we found in town.

We had an ocean-view room, which was great. If you want the nicest rooms/views, splurge on the "ocean view premium" rooms which I believe are 506 and 504- they are closest to the ocean and have an extra window that looks out to the ocean. The room itself is super basic, but totally clean and has everything you need.

The only slight disappointment was that the service was not as amazing as other reviewers had stated (and I am not picky about this kind of thing). Do not get me wrong, the service was totally fine and good, but I was expecting outstanding service based on other reviews- I just think that many of them could have been a little friendlier. By no means am I complaining about the service as it was totally fine, just an observation in comparison to some past reviews.

We loved it and would definitely return!

Room Tip: We stayed in an ocean-view king (505), it was great. If you want the best room (not cabana), ask fo...

Dear Fluffhead 1976,

We are just as glad as you are about having trusted TripAdvisor reviews for Petit Lafitte, written by previous guests. Now your contribution, not only is a testimony for both the hotel and Tripadvisor but it is also a tool for other readers. We feel honored and very appreciative of your review. We find it interesting that you expected less from the included food. I would like to say that being a small hotel allow us to buy fresh produce instead of frozen or canned. We really try to keep our ingredients as fresh as possible. That is definitely a big factor on the food quality. Yes we serve lunch and the time frame is 4 hours, from 12 until 4 PM. In total, as I have said before, guests have a total of 10 hours of the day to eat. No one should go hungry with this hours!
As far as service…well, we are wondering how this happened, I mean you seem happy with it, but definitely what you received did not meet your expectations of outstanding service. We apologize that you final perception was that of “just good” service. I wonder if the fact that the hotel has been very busy cause the staff to spend a bit less time with the guests. Maybe that’s it!?

We wish to sign off with our best wishes and our hope of seeing you again on a future Riviera Maya Vacation.

Have a wonderful Colorado spring and summer !!

Sincerely,

I. Fuentes.

I spent almost two years reviewing this resort before my wife and I decided it was time to try it. I can honestly say that we weren't disappointed and loved every minute of our time there. Now I can say that we are both used to all inclusive resorts like sun palace and the royal in Cancun so we arrived a little biased based on our great experiences at those places. We came to petite wanting a relaxed, no worries, quiet and beautiful resort - that's exactly what we got! We stayed in room 504 and the view was just something we would never get used to, the beach was literally a "stone throw away". The room was basic but clean, nothing special (we were aware of that before hand so it wasn't a surprise). I'm not complaining about the room because we were perfectly happy with it but I just want other people to be aware as they read the review. W kept the sliding door and window open the whole time and didn't use the ac once because of the cross breeze going through our room. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the waves and wind blowing through the palm trees. The food was very good to excellent, breakfast and dinner is included in your stay. You could order off a limited menu (about 7 choices - omelets, French toast, banana pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, etc) along with a nice buffet of juices, fruits, pastries, yogurt, etc. I didn't see an option for just eggs over easy with some bacon on the menu so I asked and they were happy to do it. The dinner consisted of a few main course choices like chicken, beef or fish. Sometimes they also had a buffet style dinner which was very good as well. Portions were a good size, not over filling but just right. I'm sure if you wanted another serving, they would be more than happy to do so. Lunch is not included in the stay but it's offered at the resort at a reasonable price. My wife and I split an order of chicken tacos, guacamole with chips and two beers which was more than filling and our total bill was about $28.00 with tip. They had other options on the menu as well like burgers, fish, other type of tacos and a really good (according to my wife) ceviche. If you get tired of those choices, there's a really good pizza place next door that's literally just a 2 minute walk down the beach. It's called "the coco cabana" and it's to the right of petite if you're looking at the ocean. The drinks at petite are good, beers are about $3.00 and the mixed drinks are about $4.00. The bar is open from 10:30 to 10:30 which is earlier than we're used to but we really didn't mind it. Breakfast and dinner are served in an open thatch roof area, it's very nice comfortable, lunch is served by the bar or a few tables by the bar. Staff is great, everyone is friendly and willing to get to know you by name. we did notice that it would be beneficial to know some very basic spanish for some of the staff. It's not a must because most know some English we just ran into a very limited amount of language barriers which we weren't used to from the all inclusive resorts we been to. For instance, we needed some beach towels our first morning so I asked one of the staff and he didn't understand but got someone else that did. I just felt bad and wanted to keep that from happening so we looked up towels right away! We ended up learning a few basic replies, questions etc. and didn't have any other issues. We walked around the whole resort and came to the conclusion that there really isn't a bad view in the whole resort but if you wanted a nice ocean view with minimal obstructions, we would suggest rooms 501-506 (the even ones are corner rooms). If you're interested in a cabana, try to stick to the even numbers which sit against a nice wooded area. There really isn't any room or cabana with a bad view since the grounds are so nice but if you wanted a ocean view, rooms 503-506 would be ideal. Overall we loved this place and will come back, just hope it's sooner than later!

Recommend? Absolutely! It doesn't really cater to kids as far as playgrounds, slides, etc. but we saw a few families with children and they seemed to enjoy themselves. It kind of reminds me of a place to get back to the fundamentals of vacation.. No tv or video games, just quality time with one another.

Hola JohnC,

Wow! Two years checking us out!
It is totally understandable, given your previous hotel accommodation’s history. We are glad that you kept us there that long and finally tried us. More so because you discovered that you can be perfectly happy in a place like Petit Lafitte, just as much as in an all inclusive, I believe that the key to such satisfaction level is that you do not expect PL to be like the all inclusive hotels, end vice versa.
Yes, indeed, 504 is one of the best room in the whole hotel. A Premium View Room as we call it. So the breezes and the unrestricted view of the Caribbean are all for you! The little language barriers you encountered are part of the charm in an authentic Mexican experience. You see, had it been different you would have not learned some phrases in Spanish, now for the shy types that are uninterested in language exchange, dialing reception from your hotel room extension gives you access to the English speaking personnel.
Thank you so much for your descriptive and extensive review.
And more so for your commendations, we too hope that our paths cross again!

Truly,

Iván Fuentes.
