“Another Great Stay at Lafitte”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

This was only our second time staying at Petit Lafitte, but everyone made us feel like we were longtime friends. From the warm welcome of David, the concierge, to the groundskeepers, to the restaurant waitstaff, to Jesus, Victor, Javier, and Giovani at the bar, the friendly service really is special.

If you are looking for a place where you can relax and recharge in a peaceful setting, this will surely fit the bill. If you're looking for wild pool parties, disco style nightclubs, and thousands of guests scrambling for beach chairs, perhaps the huge resort just up the beach will suit you better.

The food here is fantastic! I really do have to compliment the chefs on the dishes they deliver, and the creativity in presentation.

We are already planning our return next year.

If you want a quiet and restful resort, where guests return over many years, this is the place. The hosts are very friendly and helpful, and the visitors become like family to one another. We came with our 3 1/2 year old and immediately made friends with other families. We stayed in a beach view bungalo, and spent all of our time at the resort, and on the beach, in the hammock, on the porch of our accommodation, at the bar, or eating. The food was fair to good, and the value was great! I did not see the rooms in the hotel itself, but the bungalo was a little small for the 3 of us, and the furnishing were a bit spartan (e.g. plastic chairs on the porch, a useless small wooden table inside). Shower was hot and plentiful, although the water was excessively hard and smelled of chlorine. The pool was okay and our child loved it and the beach 100%!

Room Tip: We like the beach view bungalo because you are 20 yards from the ocean, and 5 feet from the sand and...

Hola, hola Mike,

Thank you very much for your brief, yet positive review for Petit Lafitte. We have taken note of those suggestions of yours, (improving furniture) and believe me, we are working in that direction. As somebody wrote in the last comment, there is a lot of work being done and we're committed to our reputation and to our guests. That's why there are so many repeat costumers!
We are very happy to hear you, your wife and child had a very good time and got to meet some of the old Lafitistas and their families. Yes, it is true, it doesn’t take long to merge with the group and open up to the other guests and staff. That is likely one of the most appreciated aspects about Petit Lafitte.

Thank you very much for trying us and for sharing your story with others.

We wish you a very healthy, successful and gratifying 2014!!!

Warm Regards,

Iván Fuentes

When booking, we underestimated the note about the 'basic' rooms at Petit Lafitte, and when we were shown to our room, feared we had made a mistake. The hotel rooms, at least ours, was very much in need of an update, though it did include a decent size refrigerator and a TV with a few channels. Beds were very firm mattresses on concrete bases, which might be fine for some, but did nothing for my quality of sleep. The hotel rooms are divided into 5 three-floor buildings with two rooms per floor. Building 5 faces the beach directly, with building 4 directly behind it. I would think that if you want a sea view, you'd need to be in building 5, or on the upper floors of building 4. The palm trees of the well landscaped property would obscure your view in buildings 1-3, I believe. One additional note on the rooms, the patios/balconies on floors 1 and 2 are covered, allowing you to sit outside even if a rain shower pops up, but the balconies on the third floor are uncovered.

Our concerns about the room were quickly eased by the staff who offer the incredible hospitality we've grown to expect from the people of Mexico. Several of the staff make it a point to learn your name on day one, and greet you by name every day. This is no doubt the reason that the hotel has so many repeat visitors who've gotten to know each other over the years and are also very welcoming.

The beach in front is nice, though a bit rocky, requiring you to walk to the far end of the property (just beyond the bungalows) to enter the water. There are palapas and chairs for use, though probably not nearly enough if the hotel were more than half full. They also have a number of hammocks for a relaxing siesta on the beach. The beach is nice because you feel pretty isolated, but a short walk in either direction and you find mega resort after mega resort. Seeing thousands of chairs lined up by class (chairs closest to the water for platinum members only) further alleviated our concerns about the rooms at Petit Lafitte.

As others have said, the hotel price includes breakfast and dinner, which is good given the limited number of options in the area unless you make the 1+ hour walk to town or an $18 taxi. Nice selection of breakfast options and at least two choices at dinner each night. Quality was pretty good and a nice variety from day to day. They also serve lunch at the beachfront bar and offer nice massages on the beach in a somewhat private corner facing the water.

In all, we were torn on our final rating for Petit, because the staff and service are deserving of at least a four star review. In the end, the uncomfortable bed and room quality led me to a 3 star rating, but I'd probably do 3.5 if possible. I will say that a lot of maintenance was going on while we were there, so there seems to be a meaningful effort to improve some areas of the hotel. If we decide to visit PDC again someday, we will definitely consider Petit again rather than one of the large hotels.

Dear NC Traveler9,

We hope your return to The Keystone state was a hassle free one. Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review for us. I would like to add a few words to your comments as a way of clarifying some of the points so potential readers get an extended version that helps them in their decision making!
Firmness in beds have been discussed before and If we have to choose between a firm v.s. a soft bed, we choose firm, because we can always make a firm bed softer by simply applying an orthopedic pad (very soft) on top of the firm bed. We believe it would be more difficult to turn a soft bed into a firm one. Right? We have plenty of extra pads to provide when needed, and we gladly will provide one or two when guests request it. We have 75 lounge chairs located (16 of them) by the pool area and 59 of them on the beach. When full the hotel has around 100 guests. So considering that it is unlikely to have all of the guests lounging at once, we have enough lounge chairs. We have 8 little umbrella style palapas and a large one with 4 hammocks. Plus all the hammocks hanging from palm trees (around 10 of them). So far so good I think in terms of availability.
You did an excellent job describing what we are not (the hundreds of beach chairs with the “platinum” section up front) We are Ok with not being that. :) Service, treating each guest with respect and providing attentive service is our trade mark, and we agree that is what brings people back, year after year. Hopefully, as you say, when and if you return to the area, you will consider us again. I can assure you that we invest time and resources in improving the property every month I am sure you would notice the little improvements.

Well, before signing off, let me say that we have been watching the news and we hope that this winter polar vortex, is not too harsh on you. Should you need to get a quick out of the snow trip, you know where to find us, we will be glad to assist you in creating your next Petit Lafitte experience.

Happy 2014!

My wife and I were traveling to Tankah with a group of friends for a week. We wanted to find a quite place for the two of us to relax after the fun group adventure. Petit Lafitte was the perfect choice. We loved the property as well as all the staff. The food was fantastic too. We would (and already have) recommend this low key resort.

We stayed for two nights at the beginning of the trip in a king garden view room and then four nights at the end of the trip in a beach front bungalow. I highly recomend the bungalow, however the rooms are great as well. All units are close to the beach and pool.

We will be back!!

Hola Mr tomyg6482,

We hope the December Holidays, were filled with health, good company and joy.
It looks like the winter is coming on strong. Try and stay warm and keep your PL pictures near for those gloomy days. We see that you were able to appreciate and enjoy the simplicity of Petit Lafitte, along with the staff, the food, the location and even two different rooms during your stay.
Thank you so very much for recommending us, If you have more friends wishing to escape from the frigid winter, you know where to find us, we will be honored to provide a very nice experience for them as well.

Have a wonderful 2014, and may your travels be many and happy!

We just got back from another wonderful trip to Petite Lafitte! Even though we know there are other great beaches to visit, we find ourselves returning to Playa again and again because we don't think there's a better place to stay! The atmosphere is extremely casual and laid back. The staff is friendly and helpful and always goes out of their way to make our stay outstanding! The food is fantastic! Huge fan of the banana pancakes and and fresh fruit. Petite is a small, boutique hotel and that's the way we like it! You never have to search for a beach chair, or a spot at the bar. The guests all tend to be repeat visitors and I love how everyone gets to know each other while there. It really is the best, most relaxing place to stay! i can't wait to get back in one of the numerous hammocks on the property! See you again in May Petite!

Room Tip: The bungalows are great and very homey and private but the rooms are very nice as well! There reall...

Dear Señor Briggs 13,

Thank you very much for your very positive, very eloquent review. We are honored that you have become a repeat costumer to both Riviera Maya and Petit Lafitte. The way you put it, shows all the little aspects that become the big pluses of a vacation here. A good hammock on the beach, after banana pancakes served next to slices of fresh fruit, by a friendly waiter who knows you by name in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Excellent summary of the main experiences.
Thank you very much for sharing and yes, we are already looking forward to your May 2014 return.

Have a great New Year!

Sincerely,

I.Fuentes.

My wife and I had a really good time in this hotel in which we stayed a week (bungalow).
The staff was very friendly and helpful with any question or activity/organisation. The bungalow was perfect: calm, air conditioned, cleaned daily and enough swimsuit storage space...
We got an October deal and it was really good value, breakfasts and dinners were included and we ate really well. We had a very large choice of Mexican styled breakfasts and the dinner menu changed every day, with constant quality. Deserts were not the best we've had but we usually weren't hungry for it any way.
Other guests were quiet and respectful, no big parties or loud music.
The beach was nice, we didn't use the one just in front of the hotel as the ocean wasn't clear enough to avoid the small rocks; but with a little walk on the beach (north) we could enjoy the warm water and (very) little waves.
The only downside of the hotel was its location. At first we didn't think we would need to rent a car but with all the activities we were willing to do, we needed to go to the center of the village every day and taxis aren't that cheap (around 18USD one way)!
But I guess that that's the price to pay for a quiet holiday and personalized service (we didn't want to go in an all-in resort where guests are just numbers).
Next time we're in Playa, we're definitely going back to Petit Laffite, and we'll probably rent a car for the week.

Room Tip: Bungalows are the best choice but don't necessarily need to be right on the beach (they are all...

Dear Vriass,

We owe you a thank you note for choosing Petit Lafitte for your fall vacation as a couple and for writing a very positive review for us. The Perfect stay? We like that! In the end, as I often tell people, perfection is a way of perceiving, it is more inherent to the observer than the subject, it has a lot more to do with what you were told you were buying and what you received. We aim at creating perceptions of: “These guys gave us more than what we expected.” That is why we work a lot with the intangible, meaning, a smile, a good tone in the voice, a good attitude, just as much as with some more tangible items, like the food, cleanliness, gardens and such. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NOTICING! And for your promising remark about a possible return when you visit Riviera Maya again.
We wish you a delightful Christmas celebration tonight and a happy 2014, filled with happy travels, and more perfect stays!

On behalf of all the staff,

Iván Fuentes
