“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Well, it was all good. There was no bad and surely no ugly. This is a beautiful and relaxing resort. As others have mentioned the resort is very quiet and peaceful. The hotel staff go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. We exchanged into the property and were required to add the all inclusive package for our stay. While there is only one fine dining restaurant on site and only one restaurant that serves breakfast there is enough menu options or you can partake of the theme buffets. We had room service a couple of times, the menu is limited but all was good. And my wife likes the room service option. Tips are included for the all inclusive, but we usually tipped extra while at the beach and the service was excellent. The Playa shopping area is a $14 cab ride if you can't get a reservation on the free shuttle. All in all a very relaxing vacation. If you need excitement, try something in Cancun.

We have been coming to the Haciendas since 2007, when we were invited by friends who are owners. We met some wonderful people and fell in love with the Haciendas and Playa so much that we have returned every year since, using points to exchange for this resort. We love the food and the staff and enjoy every moment of our time there. We also enjoy going into town each night and sampling the local cuisine.

With the addition of mandatory all-inclusive for non-members, the price of our vacation will increase by roughly $1000. We are extremely unhappy about this. We have our favorite restaurants in town, but now will be confined to the resort just so we can attempt to get our money's worth. It will be extremely difficult for us to spend the amount of money we will have to pay for all-inclusive, especially with all the items that are an "additional fee".

I'm sure you're thinking, why don't they just stay somewhere else. We love the Haciendas but more than that, we love the group of friends we've made while there. We vacation the same time each year so we can all spend the week together.

It shouldn't be this way. Things were fine the way they were. There are plenty of all-inclusive resorts in the area. Don't make me a prisoner of your resort and punish me because I own in another location. Offer all-inclusive as an option for those who know they only want to stay at the resort, but it shouldn't be mandatory.

If you're looking for a beautiful and quiet resort, the Royal Haciendas could be just right for you.
While we have been members at the Royal Sands, its sister resort in Cancun, for 14 years, this was the first time we stayed at the Royal Haciendas. We were very satisfied with our stay. It is very laid back and about a10 minute shuttle or taxi ride into Playa del Carmen. The restaurants were very good with usual resort prices. It's a nice change of pace from Cancun.

I have been an owner here since 2007, and I am always so impressed with the service and hospitality. The amenities are first rate and the grounds immaculate. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Royal Haciendas.

We just returned from our trip of 5 nights(All- Inclusive) at this wonderful resort and with some of the reviews in regards to food and some towards service negative, we found it much better than we expected. While the breakfast buffet was lacking, as a tip to those considering this resort, try room service for breakfast prior to the last day(as we did regretfully) as the food ala carte was much better than the buffet. Lunch by the pool every day was fresh and delicious with Grouper and Shrimp tacos out of this world. Dinner at Las Mulapas was also nice and recommend splurging for steaks or Lobster. Our 2 bedroom was excellent as far as qualify furnishings with everything you need. Turndown service was nice. Great beach and pools. We regularly try All inclusives around Mexico and Central America for the last 20+ years and find this resort near the top of our enjoyable experiences and believe you will too. It's relatively quiet and lush landscaping with good location to Playa and activities. The only negatives were Wifi reception was poor and regular drop-offs as there is interference from other Wifi options. Also, with this being a Timeshare resort, we were never told we would have to change rooms in the middle of our trip until we checked in(Time Shares go Saturday to Saturday). While it was not a big deal initially, we were disgusted when we received our call and bellhop moved us to a dirty/filthy room which delayed our move. Even with this experience, we'd stay there again.

Room Tip: We chose the 2 bedroom option which is basically a 1 bedroom condo suite with living area and kitche...

We rented our 2 bedroom villa from an owner on www.vrbo.com so we didn't chose the All Inclusive option that others had. I am glad because we aren't AI people. We also paid a 1/4 for the villa from the owner vs. directly from the resort. We booked USA Transfers for roundtrip transportation to/from the airport for a total of $129 BUT this also included a 1 hr stop at Wal-mart for our week's worth of food. We purchased food for 2 meals a day as well as alcohol and snacks. USA Transfers were a pleasure to work with and nice, quality vehicles for the 40 min drive from the Cancun airport.

We arrived around 2 and were able to check in and go to our room with our groceries AFTER we sat through a short introduction with our concierge. After he asked which time-share meeting we were attending, we told him we weren't interested and we had groceries thawing, he kindly let us on our way. We never heard another thing about it.

Our room was very nicely appointed with a kitchen full of dishes and amenities that would be needed for the week. My son loved his own room, bathroom, tv and balcony.

Day 3 - We booked a trip to Xplor with Thomas Moore in the lobby. Our son, who is 8, said it was his best day ever. We did arrive as the park was opening and were able to do both zip lines before the crowd got too big. If the wifi in the resort wasn't so spotty I probably would have booked Xplor through USA Transfers b/c the experience was so good but walking to the lobby was very easy. I think the price was only a few dollars different. However, the driver we had was fantastic. We requested a pick up of 2pm and when we walked out at 1:15 he was already waiting. I am sure you could stay at the park longer but it had rained all day which didn't hinder our fun but we were tired of being wet.

Day 4 - We took a taxi into Playa and caught the ferry to Cozumel. The ferry was a 40 minute ride to the island where we caught another taxi for $14 to Paradise Beach. For $2/ea we were able to spend the day on a beautiful beach with chairs, umbrellas and beach service. The food was cheap and excellent. The inflatables in the water and snorkeling equipment could be rented for a total of $12/person. My son loved the 2 tramps, iceberg, slide and round orbit. The beach area also had a clean pool, restrooms and changing areas.

Day 5 - the same taxi driver that took us to the ferry dock also suggested a trip to Tulum. He offered a price of a 4 hour morning for $100. This included a trip to Tulum and wherever else we wanted to go. I thought this was a deal. He met us in the lobby of the hotel at 8am for the 45 min drive to Tulum. All I can say is get there early! It is hot and the crowds are great! We spent close to 1.5 hours at Tulum exploring the grounds without a guide and eating local flair outside the park. He then offered to take us swimming with the turtles or to Cenote but we decided to have him just drop us in Playa for shopping and a late lunch.

Day 1 & 6- we spent at the resort. Since it rained every day we were here, it was nice to take advantage of the activies on site. I enjoyed the yoga at 8am however, the class was tailored for first timers. My son did take advatage of the kids activities - pirate face painting and treasure hunt, beach soccer, bracelet making and pottery painting by the pool. They do a great job at the resort to get everyone involved in the activities. The staff is really fun. The employees at the resort are all very friendly and you will not pass anyone with out a hello or hola. We did eat dinner 2 nights at Palapa de Sol for the buffet. I would agree that it was average but the service was great, the restaurant was clean and we were able to eat when we wanted. I am happy that we had the flexilbity of not being AI as we were off site 3 of the 6 days.

As for the pools, beach and property. It was immaculate! We visit a different beach location every year. Roatan being our favorite but this resort is up every morning cleaning and maintaining the property and it shows. We stayed in Phase 1 and now I know that I would request Phase 2. That seemed to be the beach and pool we migrated to. The pool had more kids for my son to play with, it had the sand volleyball court where I liked to play and the beach with the waves for my son to jump. The Phase 1 side had the quieter pool and a rocky beach perfect for snorkeling.

Here is the only con I had for the week. When we called for a taxi to take us to the ferry dock, the woman in charge of the bell hop station wanted to know where we were going and if we were going to a time-share presentation. First off, it was really none of her business where we were going and second, if we were, there was nothing she could do to stop us. The same thing happened when the taxi picked us up for Tulum. The thing is, SHE called the taxi for us and the same taxi took us both places.

I would say, as a family with a young child, I am glad this place pretty much shuts down around 7. There isn't a lot of noise. Though I knew from the reviews that EVERYTHING shuts down early I would like to suggest to leave one pool bar open for the parents that like to come out and drink. It is vacation. Most nights we were the ONLY ones swimming after dinner in the pool or ocean and that seemed to be the best time for the waves.

We will be back when we run out of paradise options to visit.
