Yes, definitely great location. BUT: stained bed linen, holes in the towels, windows can’t be safely closed (shutters broken), wind blows sand into the cabana which covers just the whole room, most of the time only cold water, got a shower head only on the last night. Kitchen facilities are “open air” and pots/pans not very clean, washing up liquid non-existent. Breakfast (although actually a restaurant) includes, eggs, toast, coffee and cornflakes – so not more exciting than in any other hostel where you pay half the price. We know it is not a 5 star hotel, but we have been travelling now for 5 months and we feel it was the worst place concerning “value for money”.

As an american when you think of a bed and breakfast you think of cosy rooms and a large assorted breakfast. Popol Vuh is really not a bed and breakfast its a mix of hostel style dorm rooms, private double rooms and a few cabana style. The breakfast and rooms are very basic (eggs and toast) and clean. Think along the lines of luxury camping. If your looking for a 5 star all inclusive place to stay this is not it and when someone lets you stay in their room Chynell from NYC (review below) don't go and write a crap review because there was some sand on the floor and some cracks in the ceiling when you stayed as a guest under my name for only 2 nights. Anyway. Popol Vuh is a great place to stay if your looking to meet travelers and make some new friends. Yes you can find more modern rooms up the street for a similar price but being so close to the beach is great and most of all the people at Popol Vuh are great. I met great ppl from all around the globe here. Gama you are the man!! I will be back in July to stay again for 3 weeks..

Room Tip: Cabanas do not have AC. They are charming but kind of dated.. Go with a private double they are more...

I visited the web sights to check out the ratings before I stayed at Popol Vuh and with the decently high averages and good feedback I was sold. But when I got there I was rather dissatisfied. I stayed in a two person cabana which sounded nice, but was much closer to that of a camping situation. The floors were not clean, the towels seemed ditry with holes in them, the private showers were dirty and molded, and for close to $70. American dollars a night i thought It was completly overprised. Around the corner the is a brand new hostel that is pristeen for less than thatper night.Although it is a hostel I thought it was overpriced and undermanned. Gama the manager was also quite a grubber wanting to share patrons food and drink but not offer the proper services in which were payed for. The breakfast of eggs toast and coffee were unreliable and sometimes nonexistent as quote , Gama , " was up late having drinks with the boys" and could not get up before 10 to open the restaraunt .

Room Tip: The shared rooms, with bunk beds looks cleaner.

This hostel has a great location near the beach and very close to the bus station in Playa. But if you're looking for a private room, don't bother to come here. There are so many cheaper hotels just up the same street, with the exact same or even better standard, and the price you pay for a double at Popol Vuh is not worth it. The rooms are very basic, and you don't get any pleasure from being right by the beach, other that it takes you one minute less to walk. No view, and a slightly dark and messy but, by all means, friendly back yard with 3 hammocks.
Breakfast in the cafe across the street was nothing special, but the staff was very friendly and nice.

Passing by Playa for a couple of nights, we had read that Popol Vuh was a no frills establishment, so we weren't expecting a five star hotel. It seemed that the ambiance was cool and relaxed, very communal and chatty. We stayed in two rooms: first one of the cabins, which was very hot but had a couple of fans (staying in the upper floor was cool, like sleeping in a treehouse), and in one of the main rooms, which was better and had AC. Breakfast was not precisely good, but nothing outside the tone of the B&B.
So, bottom line it's a great place if you go with friends, intend to crash, to have a blast, and indeed if you pretend to pursue multi-cultural experiences. Going with family not so, but not bad at all.

This hostel is really great! Really close to the beach, nice hot shower (once it heats up), and great communal kitchen. But what makes this place so special was Gama, the kind and friendly man who runs it. We cant wait to go back! Thanks for making our trip so awesome Gama!
