Its a few meters off of 5th avenue, but still nestled in the heart of Playa. Really, you're no more than a few blocks from a Starbucks in any direction, but you're quickly transported to an intimate setting you'd find dining in an international city, away from fumbling tourists and barking street vendors. Apart from the trendy design, good music and the BEST wait staff in Playa, there is the food.
Plank's namesake is, well, its planks. If you're unfamiliar, this is a cooking technique that involves cooking veggies, poultry, meat or fish on a slab of cedar or salt. Its delicious. My girlfriend and I have eaten here three times in the past year. We went the first time based on a number of personal recommendations, and have been pleasantly reminded why we come back the other two times.
Here's the foody stuff: The beef welly is a hit. Perfectly cut and cooked medium-well (to my spec), wrapped in a crisscross pie pastry that drapes down to the plate (err...plank). As with all the dishes, its served with a delicious sauce for you to dip your fork into. I coupled this with some potatoes parmesan. Wonderful. Last night we dined on salmon and I had the kebabs which was a unique presentation of speared beef, chicken and vegetables; zucchini, onion, carrot, etc.; vertically suspended on skewers. I am a fan of having fun with my food, so this worked out perfectly and yummy, through and through. I should mention the sauce and flatbread that they start you off with offers a nice hint of what's to come and instantly initiates table conversation regarding the various complimentary ingredients. The sauces are delicious and translate into smiles and comments like... "wow, that's cool". If they decide to bottle the tomato one, I want futures on a case.
In the event that you have been overwhelmed with reviews regarding steak and other meaty dishes, IF there is a vegetation in your midst, don't worry. Plank has a menu that can work for for you. My girlfriend is vegetarian (eats salmon occasionally) and loves it there like I do. I do not eat anything from the sea; but there's a tonne of seafood on the list that I can confidently assume, based on personal observations of other patrons and recommendation from my girlfriend, that its on par with all that I have eaten here.
Good cocktails and the wine list is paired well with the menu choices.
Five stars. I will absolutely be back soon.
