“Enjoyed Our Stay!”
Reviewed October 30, 2011

Just returned from a 8 night was suppose to be 7 night stay at this lovely resort. Was here during the hurricane and i must say that the resort went above and beyond in trying to make the most of a bad situation. I don't know what happened with J O in one of the previous reviews because the hotel was nothing but accommadating to us. Yes they told us to wait out the storm in our rooms but we were still went to the buffet for dinner even though all of the alcarte restaurants were closed for the night. And yes were were given a boxed lunch to tide us over for lunch but breakfast was served at the buffet as usual. I don't know what more could have been done considering the situation and i believe the safety of the guest was the resorts main concern. Also we had to stay an extra night due to our flights being cancelled on Friday and was given a discount rate the was actually least than if we had of taken out trip insurance so we made out very well. The staff goes out of their way to make everyone feels special and i would not hesitate to suggest this hotel to anyone. And just so you know i have been to at least 6 other all inclusive resorts including both Excellence Resorts in Mexico. A considers this resort our favorite after the Excellence Resorts because it's really hard to compare the 2 because Excellence is a adult only resort.

Room Tip: Most rooms are in good location in this resort because the resort is shaped like a U and nothing is...

We travellered out here in may 2011 for 14 nights for our wedding. We were a party of 8. On arrival our first impressions of the hotel were "WOW". It had one of the nicest beaches i have ever been to and i am a travel agent so am well travellered.
I can't belive the negative reviews for this hotel. The service was fantastic and the nothing was too much trouble.
My family and friends were also impressed with the hotel.
Food - so much choice and 5 a la carte restarants to choose from. Best ones was the japanese and the krystal. Amazing food and it took away the all inclusive feel that some hotels have. However even the buffet was to a very high standard.

The grounds were always kept imaculate and we had a suite which was very nice, Not the best view but hey your on holiday and you don't spend a massive amount of time in your room.

Weather was amazing.

My wedding day was perfect, It ran so smoothly and was everything i could of hoped for. I got married in the gazebo as it was a little bit more private than the beach and it had some shade whcih at 3pm in the afternoon it was very hot.
Everything down to my flowers, Hair, Makeup and the set up of the location was perfect so don't hesitate in getting married here.

The location was amazing, only a 10 minute walk to 5th avenue. We spend alot of our time on the beach and in our eyes it was 5 star. your holiday is definatly what you make it.

I have worked in travel for 6 years so have been to some exotic places and would definatly return here.

Room Tip: Suites are a luxury with a jacuzzi in the room but they are'nt in the best location.

Very elegant, well staffed and well run resort. Large, beautiful beach. Good food/drinks. Good service. Only complaints are too much smoking (need to have smoking sections) and bathrooms a bit inconvenient (to beach and restaurants). Pillows were a bit smelly (as stated in prior reviews); some fresher smelling detergent or fabric softener would probably help.

There is construction going on on north side of building (October 2011). I suggest you see where your room is before getting keys and moving luggage in. I specifically asked about construction and we were assured there was none near us; we get to our room, look out the window and there are workers hammering not 30 yards away! We were then assured they don't start working until 9:00 at the earliest, so we settled in - only to be awakened at 7:30 the next morning. They did give us another room on the other side of the resort (which I would recommend - next to the Reef), so all was good.

I definitely recommend this resort and would go back again.

Room Tip: Construction on north side; stay on south side (next to The Reef) closer to the beach if possible to...

Stayed here from March 29-April 6 for 9 nights. the property was very impressive and huge. Our first impression was that it lacked the Mexican/Caribbean feel of an open air lobby. Check in was a breeze, front desk was very nice and attentive. Room was small for a suite, but we had a great view of the ocean. Bed was hard, we asked for a matress pad, it worked a little.
Food was ok. Japanese was the best, Mexican was ok, not what I expected being in Mexico, steakhouse was not good, over cooked our meat and it was tough to eat, and the Brazillian was amazing!
Buffet for breakfast was great, same stuff every morning, but it was delicious. Dinner buffet, horrible!

We liked that the property was in a private gated community so you were able to walk out the property and down the road to the right and go to 5th Ave or go left and into the little shopping plaza.

Isla at the lobby bar, Victor in the sports bar, and Anthony at the swim up were the best bartenders. They went over and above!!

Overall my wife and I thought this hotel was outstanding. We were scheduled to stay at the RIU Playacar but upgraded at the last minute. No comparison. This hotel is like and night and day compared to the RIU Playacar. I also thought it stacked up to the Royal which we stayed at in April.

Building/Grounds 5.0

Very impressive with high-grade stone/marble, fancy chandeliers, very well-groomed grounds. In April I walked from the Royal on the beach and ended up checking out the RIU Palace. Based on the photos I returned with, my bonita senorita (of almost 30 years) and I knew we had to stay here.

Check-in/Check-out 5.0

Much much better and easier then the Royal. The time of year had something to do with it but, still the check-in staff is very pleasant and all seemed happy in their work.

Food 4.0

I didn't think the restaurants were as good overall as the Royal. The food however was very good for buffet style and the main restaurant was quiet nice. The service in the restaurants and bars in general was outstanding.

Room 4.0

It did have the musty smell that others complained about, but with the air condition on and a quick candle burning, not a big deal. The room itself was basic with a nice garden view and balcony. What really stood out was the exceptional cleaning by the staff. I'm a slob and often track sand in the room, yet unlike the Royal, the floor was spotless after every cleaning.

Beach 5.0

Much better spot than the Royal. Nice stretch of beach with no shortage of palm trees (something the Royal lacked). A quick 10 minute walk to the left facing the beach took you to 5th avenue. A quick 10 minute walk to the right took you to along a great stretch of beach and other nice resorts.

Pool 5.0

I really liked the pool area which included a nice infinity pool which we seem to have to ourselves. The pool bar had a old beer smell so we had the staff bring us drinks (in a big thermos). No issue with getting a pool chair. The Royal requied a 5am wake-up to get a good spot.

Entertainment 3.0

Typical of these type of resorts. However, the Michael Jackson show was really good. Grease? Yikes Sandi had quite a tan.

Service 5.0

Best ever at a resort. Didn't hurt that the resort seemed half-full.

Compared to other RIU resorts in Playacar 5.0

No comparision. Absolutely the best and most impressive of the RIUs. If you visit them all you'll see what i mean. The Palace Mexico reminds me of Disneyland.. older not quite as nice as Disneyworld...in my opinion.

Safety 5.0

All resorts in this area are part of a gated half-hotel, half-residential area which is very nice. We found a park along the street which had interesting Mayan ruins which we enjoyed (not Tulum but enough to say you saw Mayan ruins :)

Transportation back to airport 5.0

Wow what a differance. So much easier than the Royal which was an absolute mad-house similar to the airport. They didn't even bother taking our bracelets (which are now available on Ebay.. kidding)

Romance Factor 5.0

Sitting outside in the main restaurant on a beautiful evening with music playing in the courtyard with the most beautiful woman in the world was very memorable. The only complaint here is limited opportunities for dancing. They should add more of that as its cheap entertainment.

Sports Bar 2.0

Crappy food, could be improved.

Gym 2.0

I like using the treadmill in all-inclusives to keep the poundage off. Their equipment was poorly maintained and limited. Clean though which was such a common theme everywhere.

Overall very very satisfied and highly recommend this hotel resort. Do not stay at the other RIUs as the price is not much different but believe me this one is the best.

Room Tip: 1130 is nice in that it is in the middle.. close to pool/beach and front desk/restaurants

We loved this hotel. The food was amazing, especially the buffet - crepes, baked fish fillet, gourmet cheese, desert. As a family we are health-conscious and we like tasty, varied food. The hotel was clean, staff was friendly and the sandy beach was great. When we went in December, the pools were very cold and not heated, but the ocean was warm, so we mostly spent our time on the beach.

We also enjoyed the kids club. It had no bells and whistles (e.g. no video games & no TV), but it had 2 very friendly staff, who played a lot of games on the beach with the kids and we liked that very much. They also spoke a lot of Spanish since some of the kids in the group did not speak much English, and we loved the exposure to Spanish for our 7-year-old. She had a great time, made friends, and spent a lot of time outside and on the beach - which is why we had brought her to Mexico in the first place.

This is the first time we have visited Mexico and probably the last. We decided to go for a 5 star hotel [all inclusive] just see how much better than our traditional 4 star in tenerife. We could have had 2 holidays in tenerife for what we paid for 10 days in mexico.
Firstly I know no one can guarantee the weather but 5 days of rain [4 of it torential] didn't help].We booked with Thomsons and were told we could only purchase things with Mexican pesos. What rubbish! in Playa del carmen most prices were shown in American dollars. I was going to take dollars but was told i could not use them. The Mexicans wil also take Euros [of which i had about 250 at home. Come on Thomsons get your facts up to date! Not only that but all the excursions are priced in dollars!
Be aware also of the exit tax of 750 pesos[about £40] which of course they will take in any currency. We flew from manchester and because of a head wind the flight took 10.5 hours instead of 9.50. We then spent almost 2 hours in the airport going thru customs and being registered for our exit tax. We took the maximum allownce of cigarettes & cigars our of Manchester and were then quizzed in Mexico about the amount. Fortunately they let us keep our entitlement but this is just what you need after such a long flight!
The Riviera maya is a lovely hotel but because of the rain we spent a great deal of time inside. The cocktails and food were in general very good! I am however stggered at the waste of water in the hotel. one is advised to re-use bath towels to save water yet there is no guttering on the hotel so all the rainwater simply runs away, eventually. Also water was actually getting into the hotel and driping down the walls and thru the ceiling! In fairness the hotel did provide umbrellas to cope with the rain.
Other people have commented on the provision of drinks & coffee in the rooms. on 3 days out of 10 we were left without any coffee for the folowing morning and several time our optics & soft drinks ran out and were not replaced. Not 5 star service by any means!.
The excursions were expensive so we ventured to Cancun on our own one day. A taxi to the bus ststion was 70 pesos[about £3.50] but the bargain was the bus to Cancun [about £8.50,168 pesos return for both of us. The buses are very comfortable with a toilet, reclining seats and a movie for the 1hr 15 min journey. Once in Cancun you then catch the R1 or R2 bus to the hotel , shop or nightlife areas[10 pesos each]. We did find the the fact that we were staying in a Riu 5 star very useful as we were able to luch at another 5 star hotel where the food was superb!
The enterntainment in the hotel was average. Having visited a few Thomson gold hotels in Europe where professional acts are flown out from Britain the local enterntainment varied from very good [the Micheal Jackson show on our last night] to poor. There was also no written info on the next few nights shows just an annoucement at the end of each show. Also with 5 other RIU hotels in the area where one could go, there was no info on what shows were on in other hotels.
5th Avenue in Playa Car is your traditional tourist strip and you do get hassled all the time by the shop owners.
The food as you would expect was good but strangely there were no baked beans at breakfast.
The junior suite we had was comfortable and spacious but looked out to the back of the hotel onto a pathway and the hotel next door.
In summation , the weather did not help but I don't really think the hotel is 5 star quality.

Room Tip: Try to get one facing the pool or water fountains
