Unit 402 was just OK. The safe in the master is locked and to be used by the unit owner only, leaving all of us to use the safe in the second bedroom, which was a pain. There is no TV in the bedroom with twin beds. The living area is very small and has a only small rundown love seat and two uncomfortable chairs, not great for two couples hanging out on a rainy day. The rooftop patio has a hot tub that is filled with ice cold water and does not work. We were told unit owner has chosen not to fix it and we were not supposed to use it. Sad when you are up there and have to watch the adjoining units enjoying their fully functional hot tub. Really not much reason to even go up there. The washer/dryer is in the master unit and works, although the knob on the washer is broken and tricky to figure out. Patio is nice and has a great view.
Most concerning to me was that the pool filtration system was not in operation the entire week we were there! It appears that they just throw some chlorine granules in late at night and that;s about it. Pretty gross to see oil, hair, and debris floating around on the surface of the water. There are also way too many tiles missing from the pool. Grounds and landscaping were acceptable.
The onsite restaurant, Wicky's, recently closed, so there is no pool food or beverage service. Luckily, the security guards are helping people with umbrellas, loungers, etc. There were people cleaning here and there, and the maids did a great job cleaning the unit. Security seemed more than adequate as well.
Location is the best selling point for El Faro. No taxis needed the entire week. I'm sure other units are in a little better shape, and if the pool worked, and they had a restaurant on site, I'd feel a little better about things. I watched this place being built just six or seven years ago, and I see it needing a little more TLC than it should at this stage in it's life.
Would I stay here again? Possibly, but only because it's reasonably priced, and it has a great location. If the next visit is not equal to or better than this one, I would probably write El Faro off completely.
