My husband and I stayed here on a business trip we won. The first 3 nights were free and then we paid a group rate of $279/night for the 2 extra nights we stayed. Very beautiful property, exceptionally friendly service. One morning our wake up call didn't go through so they walked to our room and personally woke us up which I thought was amazing. Roads/paths wind and meander throughout the property so it has a very lush feel as you ride/walk along them. Rides throughout the property run constantly. There are several pools. The beach is about a 10 minute walk or few minutes ride from the main area. There are also BMW bikes you can use at any time. You pick them up and drop them at several locations throughout the property. There are 2 different boat rides you can take throughout the canal system. Very pretty and relaxing. The restaurants were all very good and not ridiculously priced. Pina Coladas were $11 each which is a little high in my opinion, but common at a property like this. The beach area has a VB net. We did see small catamarans and kayaks, but noone used them...I think because it was so windy while we were there. Not sure if they were included or extra. We didn't snorkel off the shore because of the wind (we bring our own equipment), but it didn't look like there was any coral in the area so I don't think we would've seen much anyway. The beach is very clean and nice. Great sand, but there is a small layer of small rocks as you walk into the water so water shoes would be helpful. In my opinion, I think this resort would be best for adults. There were kids there, and there was a kids club (I never saw it open), but overall it's a pretty quiet place and not a ton of kids...at least while we were there. However, we are used to bringing our kids to all inclusive resorts where there are a ton of activities and entertainment every night. There is no entertainment here except a piano in the lobby bar. We were in Room 604 which was very nice, however, across the canal/river from us was the area of the pool where the kids were swimming and also a service area for staff so it was pretty noisy. It wasn't enough to make us move rooms, but it was not super quiet.

Room Tip: Pick a room away from the pool area that has the slide (where the kids play).

Superb to enjoy with your family or your spouse. Rooms are 5 stars, the place is simply unique, service is normally very good, although in the restaurants there is quite some room for improvement with the waiters. If the place is sort of half full they are quite nice. If the place is full then they tend to be misguided, show signs of panic which indicates lack of methods and training. The food is very good provide you do not have a meal during a conference, when there were hundreds of people all arriving at the same time and having merely one hour of lunch break. In this instance it was unbelievably bad and at the same restaurant where I have had a superb meal 24 hours earlier.
The beach and the swimming pools are incredible, gym, spa, bars, boat tour, etc simply perfect. The golf carts are constantly there for you because we are speaking of big distances and they also have outstanding bicycles for those feeling like a little sport.
Don't let me dishearten you with my comments on the little faults. If you want to have a week holiday in a superb place, simply go there.

It is an incredible hotel!
The service is unique, the rooms are large and lighty, the amenities are excellent and the breakfast is so tasty.
The beach is great with calm waters. The hotel has 2 big pools and a canal to navigate.
Would recommend it for couples and families.

Stayed there in February 2014. Casita rooms are large and private with huge bathrooms. The furniture was a bit more knocked up than I'd expect for such a hotel. The hotel supplies lots of mosquito repellant though I saw no mosquitos when I was there.

There are electric transport vehicles for getting around the resort. There are also bikes for use but more often than not none available. There is also a free boat tour around the mangroves and neighbouring hotels.

The beach is nice but small and later in the day it gets crowded. The Caribbean water was perfect though.

The food is good but expensive.

The Fairmont Mayakoba is a wonderful resort. The location within the Mayakoba compound is so convenient. The staff goes above and beyond to make everything perfect - so friendly and helpful. The nature walk was gorgeous - don't miss the cenote! Also, I loved the french press and tea press in the room - it was fantastic to sit on our patio with a cup of coffee each morning.

Room Tip: Grab breakfast to go at the cafe near the pool, make yourself some coffee with the french press, and...

A five-star experience with only one suggestion for improvement. Lunch and dinner service were typically slower than ideal not because the staff weren't trying their best - but simply because there weren't enough staff. We couldn't understand why the restaurants would turn guests away when numerous empty tables existed. Advice if headed to Mayakoba? Make your dinner reservations several weeks before leaving home requesting an email confirmation. A pain to think about when you have much to do at home/work, but easier than being disappointed when you arrive to find that reservations are not possible as they're fully booked.

Other than the above suggestion, a superb resort where the staff truly are what makes Mayakoba so special. All other aspects of the resort were fabulous.

Dining: excellent 5-star meals, amazing selection, delicious and well presented. Numerous options for those with special dietary needs such as diabetics, heart healthy, vegan, gluten free etc. I was a bit concerned before going as a previous trip to Mexico (not at a Fairmont) had resulted in food poisoning. No concerns whatsoever here. We truly looked forward to every meal. The breakfast buffet as others have noted, is outstanding, especially when enjoyed on the terrace.

Boat ride: well worth taking this free boat ride through the canals/mangroves. Our tour guide provided a fascinating and imformative glimpse into this remarkable ecosystem. Crocodiles, iguanas and lots and lots of variety of birds (one or two teasing the crocs) were some of the highlights. Make reservations through the concierge.

Bikes: BMW bikes are provided are available at several bike stations throughout the resort which was a great way to get from the beach to the main pool or to provide a little exercise on the way to breakfast. The only downside was that some guests felt the bikes should be available to them exclusively and would 'hide' the bikes in the entry of their suite. Come on people...if everyone shares their toys in the sandbox... I'd like to see the resort provide more bikes as it was such a fun way to get around.

Cooking classes: For around $40 USD you can sign up for a class with the executive chef. Well worth it. My daughter and I had a private behind-the-scenes fascinating tour of the numerous kitchens and food prep areas. After donning our own Fairmont aprons we prepared, under the chefs guidance, a Willow Stream spa bento box lunch. What fun! The kitchen staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Educational, enlightening and a great way to spend an afternoon. Many other classes to choose from.

Beach: We all enjoyed time sailing on the catamaran, thanks to Marisa and Alexander. To give you an idea of how every need is considered, upon returning to the beach, Marisa met us each with a cold bottle of water - just what was needed after an exhilarating sail with the salt spray splashing over the top of the boat. Thanks! Kayaking and volleyball are other activities to try if you're not walking along the miles of soft sand, splashing in the ocean or reading a good novel under the shade of the many palmleaf structures. A decadent treat, you can order drinks/lunch, to be delivered by one of the enthusiastic staff members. Thanks Edy! The grilled fish sandwich, the fresh guacamole and salsa were particularly enjoyed.

Rooms: Perfect! All the amenities you'd want - spacious, spotlessly clean, excellently maintained and I loved the fresh flowers to welcome us. Patricia, our housekeeper, was meticulous in how beautifully she prepared our room daily. Thank you also to the turn down staff who consistently and expertly prepared our room in the evening. It feels a bit strange to have a down duvet in a tropical country and I would have preferred a cotton bedspread or light blanket. Otherwise the beds were super comfy and the rooms very quiet.

While the resort grounds are beautiful, it's the friendly staff who made our stay easy and enjoyable so we could focus on relaxing. Thank you!

Finishing a great week of R&R at resort. Despite large size of resort, we were well attended to and felt like we were at a luxury boutique hotel. While everything was great, Alan and Juan and the rest of team provided excellent service! Claudia was our favourite hostess.
