“Honeymoon”
Reviewed January 12, 2014 via mobile

We spent our honeymoon at The Royal. I absolutely love the swim up suites. The food and service was very good. We spent most of our time at the swim up pool and our room. The hydrotherapy in the spa was bad but the couple massage was excellent. I love Asiana. I did not enjoy Maria Marie. Pelicanos had a strict dress code when the restaurant is on the beach. Spice was our favorite place for breakfast.

We have been to many all inclusives. The Royal is beautiful and has a great location right in town and on the beach. The rooms surpass most all inclusives. However, I was there with my son who is 25. We specifically booked two queens ocean view first floor. We were told by the travel agent two days before leaving that they didn't have them for our check in day but would bring in another full size bed (not a rollaway) and get us the right room type asap. When we got there we had a king and a rollaway. Each day was asked to get two queens and if they were offered it was not ocean view and 7 floors up near construction....so we never got it. Interestingly, on our ride back to the airport the couple next to us complained that they wanted a king and had two queens and never got their request fulfilled...we thought it funny we had the opposite situation so asked where there room was...IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO OURS! The problem could have been fixed for both of us so easily.
The other disappointment was being handed wine lists with prices. The wine included in the all inclusive was not on that list so you had to know what you were doing not to get charged when you didn't expect it. One restaurant on the property costs $80 USD per place and is not included. And lastly, I hate getting hounded to buy a time share...this resort does that too....resorts need to figure out how not to hound the guests who don't want it.
With these exceptions noted, the rest of the resort is great....service is great....food is good (unless you want lobster, that too is an extra $39.00 per plate). I would go again, but I would be smarter!

Room Tip: Be sure to get what you pay for before you go...they won't switch it. We met people who had pai...

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Playa Del Carmen in November 2013, so a slightly delayed review. Just to kick off with the hotel itself looks amazing its a very classy looking place, but that's where it ends I'm afraid. Now if your a mid to late 20's American, fresh from the Botox clinic, there for 4 days, on your "buddies" wedding and are looking to hang round the pool all day and drink your own body weight in beer then this is the hotel for you! Seriously this is how it is most of the time. The hotel hosts a wedding almost every day so it's just party time for the wedding guests. At 10am every morning the hotels entertainment staff kick start the Bose sound system around the pool and for the rest of the day it kicks out loud, mainly dance music. How can the hotel say that's a peaceful way to relax!! So to avoid the drunken GQ models around the pool, you head to the beach where it is a lot quieter. Once you have slide through the 2mm gap between each bed and cleared some away to create a bit of space for yourself you notice that the staff are setting up the beach for yet another wedding! They just set it around you. One day, stuck into a good book, I looked up to find I was within spitting distance of a bloody buffet!
Another issue is the way the staff hound you to try and sell you some sort of gold membership. In simple terms it's a timeshare! They try to get you to go on a breakfast tour with them where they show you all the rooms you can't afford ha ha just say no.
Finally, if your English, remember this. The hotel is about 90% American occupancy and most of them are there on someone's wedding so they are only interested in having a good time and they don't care if your there on holiday to relax.
The hotel is nice and the food and the service very good to be fare but avoid this place if you want a quiet relaxing holiday, as you won't get it at this hotel.

This resort has great location. It is on the beach and walking distance to the 5th avenue where all action is. Staff is very friendly. It is not new but everything is kept up. I was at the resort in September. At that time my complaint was entertainment team. They are now great. Special thanks to Moshe. He made us feel very welcome and special. We appreciate his friendliness and care. He made our stay extra special. We felt like part of the family. Thank you Moshe!

Stayed here for our honeymoon and we loved it. They had tons of free activities, fast room service, clean rooms, and polite staff. They had great food at all the restaurants too and the staff would always ask if you needed a drink, when you're by the pool. We wouldn't stay anywhere else if we go back to mexico. Loved this place!

First and Foremost we want to thank the following staff members of Royal PDC. They went well above and beyond whenever we saw them. ARMANDO - Concierge. Waiter MOSSO at Maria Maria's restaurant. Chef PASTOR at Maria Maria's restaurant. VI and ARI with pool and beach drink service, JOSE the capitan at Pelicano's restaurant.

We stayed here a few years ago, and loved it. Everything about it was top notch. Therefore this year we decided to go back. We were a little concerned due to a few recent negative reviews, however once we arrived we found it the negative reviews unfounded. There was no construction noise of any concern at the beach or pool. There was no smell of sewage at the beach, pool, or property. And we had over 24 hrs of hard rain which some have attributed to the smell. Food was good. No sickness experienced. The only stomach pain ever felt was from being so full from eating too much of the great food!

Armando was our Royal concierge person. He greeted us and was extremely friendly, informative, and helpful to us. Not just the first few minutes but the entire stay. He recognized us whenever he would see us around the resort and always was sure to tell us to call him should we have any concerns or problems.

We had a great room, above the pool area on the left side of the resort. There was absolutely no noise heard from the construction next door. We did have noise issues from the room above us dragging there chair/tables/or furniture around. Not sure what they were doing, but they were rude and careless. Also there were a number of door slam noises throughout the entire stay. Not sure if it was guests or staff, but that should be addressed so the doors do not wake people up at 6:00AM as it did us. The room was very clean, spacious, and in great working order. There is a mini-bar with beer, soda, tequila, vodka, rum, as well as fruit juice and mixers. There is also snacks. This is all free for the guests and will be re-stocked daily.

We ordered coffee from room service our first morning. It never showed up? Next time we saw Concierge Armando we mentioned it to him, and he repeatedly apologized for the problem with room service and said he would address the problem. He also sent us a bottle of wine and fresh strawberry's to our room a little while later. That night we ordered room service for the next morning. It showed up on time and was good.

Pool was great. We received excellent service with drinks from ARI and VI. Both were prompt, cheerful, and always there with a refill. Also, if you feel the drinks are not strong enough simply ask for a shot of rum, tequila, vodka etc on the side. They will gladly bring it to you and you can make your drink as strong as you wish.

One issue with the pool chairs is the way you have to reserve them. Basically people get up early (6:00AM) go get multiple towels from the towel counter and reserve THEIR chairs, then they go back to bed and then breakfast. Some selfish people never even come and use the chairs they reserved. Many selfish people will reserve 4,5,6 or more chairs with the unlimited towels that you can get even though they do not have that many people in their party. This way they have plenty of room to hoard all to themselves in their area. The problem with this is there is never enough chairs for the guests that are at the hotel even if guests did not abuse the chair reservation system. The Royal definitely needs to address this problem. Especially with the fact that Royal beach is not that big, and they have way too many cabana's eating up their valuable beach space.

The food was for the most part excellent. Maria Maria's was probably our favorite due to the excellent table service and knowledge we received from Mosso. We ate there 3 of our 5 nights. Mosso is very knowledgeable about what he does and he takes his job seriously. He goes above and beyond to make sure that the guest is 110% satisfied. This includes taking care of special requests that are not on the menu and working with the chef to bring the customer what they want. The Chef who is named Pastor came to our table one night, to make sure that we were satisfied with our meals and the special requests we asked for.

Asianna also was very good and our waiter BOB took great care of us. We went to Spice one day for lunch and it was good. We went again one night and the selection was not very good. Also the cooks at the Spice Buffet need to learn to interact better with the customers. The table service people were good at Spice. Mediteranno restaurant we only went to for Breakfast. It was typical breakfast at an all inclusive. Eggs, omelets, bacon, sausage fresh fruit etc. Table service by POOT was very good.

Entertainment was good. Some of the shows seem similar but overall good. The entertainers definitely work very hard.

Complaint would be the lack of food at the pool area. Burgers, pizza, taco's or something would be very good. The Royal does not want people in beach attire in the restaurants, so for a quick lunch you have to go back to room, get dressed go to eat, and then reverse the process to go back to the pool or beach. They need a quick snack shack that serves pub style food quickly to not interrupt the entire day. Especially on days when it is sunny and you want to take advantage of the good weather.

Another issue was getting a $20 or $50 into smaller bills, so that we tip the great staff. It is next to impossible to consistently find an employee with change. And whatever you do - do not ask MARIA at the front desk. She rudely told us she does not give out change. She was the only employee of the entire property who was too busy to be friendly to us. Yes a front desk person??

Overall we loved our time here, and will definitely stay here again in the future. We highly recommend this resort.

I have been to The Royal twice and it is absolutely amazing! The rooms, food, swim up pool bars...everything is so WONDERFUL! The bars in downtown Playa are pretty fun too. I felt very safe while out shopping on 5th ave which is right by the hotel!
