Our fourth trip to the Royal and found all services and personnel up to the standards that we previously enjoyed. Only drawback was feeling sorry for the guests in the 800 rooms as there is construction going on next door on the north side of the Hotel.
Carlos in Sports and Entertainment was especially attentive to guests and did a wonderful job in daily water aerobics.

Room Tip: Junior Suites are the best value and very roomy.

We just came home from a 6-day stay at the Royal PDC, and we had a fantastic time. We had an oceanfront room that was gorgeous, Mirna was our housekeeper and she was great. The restaurants were really good, especially dinner at Maria Marie and El Mediterraneo, the food was delicious. Special thanks to Jeronimo, Reynaldo, Yolanda, Adan, Mario, and Felipe at Spice; Suhey and Humberto at El Mediterraneo; and Diego, Francisco, Anais, and Genis at Maria Marie. They were all wonderful and so nice.

The beach and pool were great, and the pool drinks service was fantastic. Many thanks to Ruth, Prude, Laura, and Ivonne for great service! The drinks could have been a little stronger, they had very little alcohol in them. That's really my only complaint.

I had a massage by Levinia at SpaAzul, she was amazing--thanks also to Isabel and Yesica at the spa, they were so kind and helpful.

All over the resort, everyone was extremely friendly and also extremely professional. It was a great trip and a great experience, we could definitely come back. Highly recommended!!!

I am sitting at this resort as I write this. My wife and I stayed here 5 years ago and thought it was fantastic. This time we our lives are better off so we booked a beachfront walkout suite. As per their website, we went online and chose the actual room we were to stay in. When we arrived, they placed us in a different room. It was five rooms down from where we were supposed to be. They didn't tell us they were changing our room but when I phoned Wilhemena at the concierge desk she said that the computer makes mistakes sometimes and that the room they were placing us in was in her opinion a better room. We went from room 513 to 508. 513 was far away from the pool activities (which was very loud all day ) and 508 was right next to the pool bar and the bands. The room is fine but certainly not worth the cost they charge. We chose to come back to this resort because you don't need reservations at the
restaurants. Well it turns out that you do at two or three of them. This is not what their website says. We went to one of their restaurants called Maria Maria last night, and felt we were rushed with the waiter hovering over us and the steak was very tough. We asked for turndown service between six and eight and had to phone housekeeping at 8:15 to see if this was going to happen at all. All this in the first two days.
I don't write a whole lot of reviews but I do if a resort is very good or does not live up to expectations. We have now stayed here twice and at the Excellence Cancun and the Excellence Playa Mujeres, just north of Cancun, both the Excellence resorts are south unbelievably better than this resort. And certainly much better value for your money.
We all work hard for out money so be aware that the RPDC looks great (and it is beautiful) but it is not what it once was. The Excellence wins out for better beach, better food, friendlier, classier and its less expensive.
Now I have five days left so I will try to make the best of it, My wife and I travel a lot throughout the Caribbean and are actually disappointed that no one really tried to make our room right. Given the choice, we will defiantly stay at one of the Excellence resorts next time.

Overall very nice place. Food was very good.buffet at Mediterranean restaurant far superior to buffet at spice..unfortunately we didn't figure that out till our last day. Pelicanos was consistently good, breakfast , lunch and dinner. Service everywhere was great.
Construction next door is definitely a problem, but not their fault. However, upon check in we were assured we would not hear the construction in our room...a blatant lie...it began Monday morning and continued all day...sometimes till 8 or 9 pm!
My main issue....the beach and pool area is very congested..so many beds on the beach, packed so close together there's almost no beach. Also no shade available around the pool. The answer..book ONLY a swim up room, all numbered in the 600's.....AWESOME! Waiters will bring you drinks right to your own pool. Area around these pools is nice and quiet. Room service food was great. Switched to swim up halfway through vacation..so glad we did!

Room Tip: Swim up ONLY! Any of the 600 numbers, but wait till construction is over!

My wife and I went here on our honeymoon. We were very impressed from the second we pulled up. Lived up to its name just from the first impression compared to other resorts pulled up to when picking people up for excursions. The overall experience was fantastic. We had an oceanview suite with a huge and I mean huge bed. But we changed rooms after the first couple of days for a better view overlooking the pool and ocean. Once we moved in to this room we had minor experiences with a leak, ants, and the remote was missing from the TV (not that we used it much, but it was good to have on before bed or when we were getting ready). It took a few calls and visits from Maintenance to work out the remote issue but beyond that it was fine. These were all minor compared to the great service and honeymoon we had. Everyone who works there is so friendly and extremely nice. Food was good, nothing to rave about. The coffee house was one of the best things about it. The pool area was awesome and the guys who work the pool area make it so much fun and its never boring. Many thanks to Jesus, Danny, Alejandro, Victor, Juan, Leslie, all the poolside staff, and anyone else I missed. As for nightlife, after a full day in the sun we didnt need to be out too late because you get so drained. But the shows in the lobby at night were a nice touch and the performers were very talented. We didnt check out any places outside of the resort much because you didnt really need to. There is 5th avenue however which we heard was great for shopping and bargaining with the people who work at the stores. The beach wasnt as great as other places we've been but the pool was so nice and the environment around it that we didnt need to frequent the beach. We got a couples massage which was wonderful. We went 45 minutes early to sit in the steam room and sauna and then we got a 50 minute massage. Well worth it! For excursions, we booked through Olympus since our travel agent uses them. They are located right in the hotel. We swam with the Dolphins with Dolphinarus. This was cool but drawn out. What lasted 4 hours, could've been done in 2 at the most. It was also very repetitive. The other excursion we did was Selvatica. We did 12 zip lines, rode a buggy off-road, and zip-lined/swam in a cenote. This was by far one of the best parts of the trip. The guys who run this (Rasta, Mexican Wolverine, and Chuy to name a few) are awesome! They made you feel so safe and made it so much fun! We highly recommend this to anyone interested. It was reasonably priced too. This resort is perfect for couples. Not a singles spot at all. And its even good for groups of people looking to get away and have a good time. Overall, this place was great. We'll definitely come back. It was the only place where we didnt want to leave where most places we have had our share of being away from home for the time we spent there. We love this place and will never forget the great times we had here.

Dear Anyone considering the Royal in Playa del Carmen:
Holy Sh$%... This resort is amazing. From entering the lobby until we hopped in our taxi to leave we were both in love with this place. The town is literally 60 meters from the entrance with plenty of shopping, dining and people watching. Erika (our savior) checked us in on Friday afternoon, our room had water damage so they upgraded us to a master suite, free bottle of Grey Goose and Patron & we received $150.00 to use on property. We elected for the beach front private dinner which was superb and romantic. We had no less than 5 questions per day which Erika was more than happy to answer and she sent us in all the right directions. From jet skis, snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins we simply had a blast and all the staff greet you in a very sweet and infectious gesture which I was almost doing by the end of the first day.
Our room was taken care of by Maria and it was immaculate twice a day. Exchange your cash at the desk in the lobby as it yields the highest. Sushi was great and the 24 hour VIP lounge has a make your own cocktail section with a Ping Pong table, hello. All of the staff, Erika especially, are so gracious and love to help when they can. Enjoy your time at this stellar hotel.
Joseph & Michelle

Room Tip: Splurge for the ocean view on any floor. It is very nice to wake up to.
