I have been some many times to Mexico that I don't count anymore. From Riviera Maya to Cancun to Acapulco... most of them all all-inclusive 3, 4 or 5 stars hotels but sometimes not.

This place was truly my favorite of all time. The location is perfect: sorry but the location is THE BEST (if you want to walk on 5th for exmaple or take the boat to Cozumel). The food is awesome and we never had to wait for a seat at any of the a la carte resto (I waited two minutes at the Maria Marie on Wednesday but I can deal with this). The service is great. Staff is great (specially if you get to know them better). My personnal opinion is that this hotel would be ranked in the top 7 if it was not for some of the comments: no #1 for price/quality in my book and I have stayed at some of the top ten hotels mentioned on this site. This is truly the best quality/price ratio that I have encountered so far. Yes, you can get away from time sharing stuff. Yes, you can live with some mid-day only renovations (I spoke with the workers for several minutes and can tell you that they do their best to avoid any sound).

This hotel is very very clean no question about that. I left a bit of sand underneath the bed and two hours later it was out. Yes, I am some sort of tester... Bertha did an awesome job.

We were four and had to think carefully to find cons at this place. Just to name a few: Matt at the bar, Teresa, Omar, Ruben, Geraldo, Alfonso (his tag says Helston because there are too many Alfonso). Chef`s plate (luxurious 7 services restaurant) cooks had prepared a super delicious cake for my birthday. They cooked scallops (not on the menu) for my brother.

Room Tip: Ocean view is great if you can get these but I would not worry about the room if you are there just...

We stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen from 09/09/12-09/16/12 for our honeymoon. This was my first real vacation so I was just thrilled to be in a new exciting place for a week! I enjoyed the vacation for the most part but I would not return.

Pros:
Food at most restaurants was delicious. Spice and Asiana were our favorites. Spice had the best lunch buffet! The service at Maria Marie's was the best! Breakfast at Pelicano's was really enjoyable because the view was fantastic.

Location was perfect. We loved being so close to the beach! Our travel agent informed us that the beach area wouldn't have any rocks so we were expecting a perfect beach. There were rocks but there was an area without any where everyone goes swimming.

Our room was gorgeous. We had room 255 which was an ocean view. The view was spectacular, it looked just like the hotel pictures.

Cons:
Service was inconsistent. We asked to change the time of housekeeping to be when we would be out for lunch starting on the second day. This happened only once. We asked 4-5 times to have our room cleaned around noon and the housekeeper came around 4pm or later each day. This really put a damper on our honeymoon. We weren't asking for much but they could not make it happen. On the last day we were really fed up because it took all the romance out of our experience having to worry when someone was going to knock on our door to clean. They tried to make it up to us by cleaning our room when we went out for dinner. We came back to a clean room with a bubble bath ready and some chocolate truffles. That was really nice of them but I only wish they would have cleaned the room when we asked for the rest of the trip. For some people this isn't a big deal but this really caused a lot of frustration. If we weren't on our honeymoon, it wouldn't have been such a big deal.

The "Welcome Package" was a joke. As soon as we arrived, sales people were trying to get us to pick up our welcome package. We were tired from flying all day so we didn't pick it up our first day there. We woke up the next morning to a note on our door telling us we needed to pick up our welcome package. We went to the lobby area to finally get it over with and the staff was already trying to convince us to return for another trip. They wanted us to have breakfast the next morning with them and sit through a presentation. No thanks... we are on our honeymoon! When we went through the lobby and saw the sales people later, they always seemed so irritated with us since we didn't sit through their presentation.

Room Service meals was hit or miss. Most of the time the meals were cold/soggy by the time they got to us, We asked to have them put the food in the magic box but we still had them knocking on our door a few times. It was awkward.

Noise levels at night were ridiculous. We had a room close to the stairwells/elevator and I am not sure if this was causing all the noise to amplify. At night (2am-4am), you could hear the staff cleaning, pushing carts and just making a ton of noise. I did not get one full night of sleep when I was there, My husband slept through the majority of it though.

I do have one tip, make sure to get your drinks without any ice. I knew not to drink the water but the thought didn't cross my mind not to have ice in drinks. I ended up being pretty ill the last couple days and it only got worse when I returned I visited the doctor and they gave me an antibiotic. Dramamine and Pepto Bismol helped a lot when I was there! My husband didn't get sick at all though and he did have ice in his drinks.

I did enjoy my honeymoon but I expected so much more considering all the reviews and how much money we spent.

We had our 2 wk hol here from Aug 25, staff at check in dek made things very pleasent and easy helped by our welcome drink. Throughout our stay all the hotel staff were very friendly and polite from the cleaners to concierge, gardeners would greet u with a heartfelt hola.
Our room was cleaned and had turn down service daily which inluded aroma therapy candles, mood chosen by u at check-in also cute animal towel creations and chocolates by your bed for sweet dreams.
Food at all the restaurants was of good quality pelicanos being our fav as you get to look out at the sea as you dine.
If going to excaret on a trip be sure to stay for the show finale its well worh it, the day trip to cozumel was great too, it includes snorkling a reef, aligators, lunch, tequila distillery free bottles of drinking water and friendly guide with sense of humour and mexican history lesson thrown in, both trips booked direct through hotel.
Prior to booking our trip we had read alot of reviews on here about the gold card hard sell that was practiced at this hotel
we were a bit dubious but honestly had no trouble from these people and deffinately felt no pressure.
The proximity to 5th ave was convenient and although here u did get touted you have to remember these people are only trying to earn a living once you say no thanks they leave you alone.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday we do advise that if you want some quiet relaxing time then the beach is the way to go as the pool can get very noisy with music and game time each to their own.

We stayed at The Royal from Sept 22-29 and loved it. The location is great, we really enjoyed walking 5th avenue just a block up to the corner. The hotel is doing construction and think they should tell you if it is outside your room. We did switch rooms to get away from the construction and our room overlooked the street and Gran Porto across the street. the rooms are nice and spotless. I think they really could use a small sofa instead of just one chair to sit in. The jacuzzi was great.Pools great, could use shade. Food was good, and loved the option to dine at the Gran Porto too, excellent Mexican food at Marie. The service it top notch in EVERY area from the very hard working servers, entertainment staff, front desk, cleaning people, room service, they all try hard to make your stay wonderful, this is what makes this place a 5 star property.

Room Tip: ask if there is still construction going on. lower floor rooms are convienent for going back and for...

Excellent resort. The room was beautiful, with everything you could ask for. The food was delicious, especially at the Maria Marie restaurant. The staff was friendly and hospitable, especially Essau from guest service. Great location as well, Playa Del Carmen is an amazing place to vacation.

This place really is excellent. The service is outstanding and the food is fantastic. We were escaping our 3 year old twins and didn't want to see a kid for a week. Mission accomplished. You could have as much activity or as little as you want. Our favourite restaurant was Asiana. Service in all restaurants is outstanding. A few tips: 1. The lobby and the restaurants tend to be warm, so dress lightly. 2. The north end of the beach (opposite the watersports shack) has no rocks, so swim and boogie board there. 3. If you plan to use the double bath tub, just call the concierge and tell them what time you want it ready and it will be so (no waiting for it to fill). 4. Avoid "Guest services" -- they are really the "Sales" group and will constantly try and rope you into presentations (one of our few critisisms). 5. Take part in the activities -- the resort activities group (Omar, Danny Boy, Katie, etc.) really do a good job (bike tours, stretch class, beach volleyball) -- they make you feel welcome even if you're coming to an event solo

Room Tip: We were in room 347 (Ocean view) -- the view in this room is very peripherial, so the ocean view is...

This hotel is NICELY LOCATED near 5TH AVENUE and on the ocean. WE HAD A SWIM UP SUITE(ROOM 630)-orginally we had swim up suite 624 but the construction noise was unbearable, I would not stay in this resort until all renovation is completed. . HERE ARE MY PROS AND CONS ABOUT THE RESORT.

PROS
very, very clean everywhere (lobby, suite, restaurant, pool area etc)
outstanding service and attitudes of the entire staff. we were never solicited by anyone in the resort.
Beautiful pool areas and swim suites
Very nice ocean frontage and beach(no sandbags)
Great location for local shopping.
THE transportation and tour co. (BEST DAY TOURS) based out of the hotel is very relaible.

CONS
Do not stay here until renovation is 100% completed-if we would have known about the constant jack hammering and pounding etc (it is intense) we would have never booked this resort. this is the main resaon for the low rating.
restaurant food overall was very mediocre-from the Chef's Plate on down-(and we ate in all of them)the seafood and chicken was very acceptable and very good. The meat, pastas and pizza was not for digestion.
The drinks were extremly bad(unless you drink beer) they do not pour known brands-we went to Senor frogs to get a good margarita The red wine was horrible. Also avoid the tropical drinks.
The night time shows are fun to watch- if you don't expect too much from them.

Room Tip: If you go while the renovation is still going on -get a suite near the pool area-its noisy but bette...
