“Great food, fun atmosphere--a new favorite!”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

We first noticed Caguguameria because it was packed with locals and looked like a cute place. We come to Playa at least once a year and this was new to us. The menu has a lot of beef and pork options, although some seafood is available. My husband loved the northern Mexican steak soup and beef tacos. They are very proud of their unique homemade sauces, which they will describe for you. Personal flatbread pizzas include a great salmon pizza with Gorgonzola, sprouts and black olives. I eat a lot of guacamole when in Mexico and their traditional version was outstanding, and by far the largest portion I've seen. While there is quite a bit of seating downstairs, the upstairs area has a eclectic mix of furniture and an overall funky design. Seating can get tight upstairs at busy times. The first night we sat at an old Coca-Cola card table. There is a large picture of a black French bulldog upstairs and on the waiter's shirts. His name is Guevas and he is the owners dog and the name of their signature mescal. There is a full bar with a wide variety of tequilas and they serve a nice Chilean Sauvignon blanc for us wine drinkers. Even the music was a good mix and added to the fun. We'll definitely be back here on our next trip!

“Classico”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

You really shouldn't miss this place and be sure to give yourself about 15-20 minutes to read through the extensive menu. I'm not one to mention burgers but when I saw one of their burgers I couldn't believe the size! Your jaw will get a work out. Their Chanclas are incredible. They are pretty much a flatbread cooked in a wood oven. Add lobster, goat cheese, oaxaca cheese, caramelized red onion and top with fresh sprouts and its a meal you won't forget. The mission now is to get through their extensive menu. No reason to eat on 5th when you have this kind of place.

“Yummy, refreshing and fun!”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

We stumbled onto Cagumeria de Esquina on a drive to Tulum from the Canucn Airport. It is hard to get excited about anything after a red-eye flight from Colorado to Mexico, but this restaurant is a real gem. We enjoyed dining on the simple, good and creative dishes, and the quirky atmosphere.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed September 5, 2013 via mobile

As one reviewer mentioned above, I really wanted to like this place.
The location is great, and the restaurant is beautiful, especially at night. Maybe to go for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere is the best option for this place.
We went for lunch and the restaurant was understandably quiet mid-week. After reviewing the menu for twenty minutes, we were completely overwhelmed and didn't really understand (although we did laugh a few times at the humour). We asked for one of the "Chanclas" (pizzas), but without the ham, due to a food allergy. The waiter came back to tell us that it was not possible to make ANY modifications to the menu, and pointed out the text on the menu saying exactly that, so as not to make the chef cry.
I insisted that I did not want to add any ingredients, just remove the most expensive ingredient. He went back and the chef came out to insist that there were NO modifications allowed. I finally asked if it would be possible to send out the pizza with the ham on the side, not even touching the pizza. He said yes. To me, this was the same as throwing good food in the garbage.
At this point I was extremely frustrated at the waste that the chef was insisting on, as the pizza was sent back with the ham completely untouched.
The rest of the food tasted over-seasoned and very salty. The waiter was attentive, and seemed to also be a little frustrated that he was not allowed to help us with our requests.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend the place, and hope they make some changes, as the place seems to have a lot of potential.
