This new honest-to-goodness thai resto fills a sorely needed spot in PDC. Some things hit the mark better than others. The starter rolls are not great, with a rubbery wrapping and filled with very unorthodox celery. The Pad Ki Mow was tasty but did not resemble what we were used to. On the other hand the Pad Thai was very close to what we were craving and the red curry was so delicious, I wanted to lick the bowl clean. The kitchen was very accomodating and made meat dishes in a vegetarian version with tofu. We had some white wine by the glass, the selection could be more appropriate for thai food. Given that it is in Mexico, although its not 100% authentic thai, it definitely comes much closer to it and is by far and away the best thai I have ever had in Playa. It is also brand new, and I think some of the small things, like wine option, are easily polished. On the other hand, the service needed no improvement. Both times we ate there the staff were excellent and the accomodation in the kitchen will keep us coming back. Beautiful setting on Playa's trendiest restaurant strip.

i am living in Playa since 13 years, probably if I would be steady guest in the fancy restaurants in Los Angeles or New York, i might have been a bit disappointed with a few details, but, well, i live here and I have to say it was a great experience.
First of all, before I traveled to thailand in 2007, i never really felt thai cuisine would be my thing, but being there and enjoying restaurants along the coast and in bangkok, it definitely changed my opinion.
But coming back to Playa, it was just not the same. Maybe the chefs, maybe the ingredients, i don't know exactly what it was, but i felt like my young love for thai food just felt asleep...
no actually this changed visiting Gluay Maai Thai just 2 days ago...
we tried the sesame shrimp and chicken skewer appetizer and it was great. The restaurant has a very nice design and the staff managed to give us a pretty good service, even if we ate out with our 18 month old baby and we all know this can be really challenging for waiters and other guest around...;)
but when the main courses came, which where the green curry with chicken and the red curry with shrimp, i wished we could have found some more space in our stomachs for an extra portion. It felt like being in thailand again!!! The chef is from thailand and it is really authentic, funny enough we paid more than in thailand, but for being in Playa the prices were still very reasonable. we definitely will come back and try other dishes on the menu. The only observation would be, that maybe the part of ordering different rice side dishes should be explained a bit better, so you wouldn't get your main course with out it.

Although perhaps not like the traditional Thia food that we have experienced, the food was beautiful and fresh.
The appetizer which was given as a starter was a tasteless spring roll and we probably would have returned it if we were paying for it.
The Pad Thai although not exactly like what we have come to expect had a great flavour and definitely fresh.
The green curry had a beautiful flavour and we certainly will have that again and try the red curry as well.
And the best was the coconut flan. A delicious light dessert that perfectly complemented the meal.
Service was very good with the waiters and chef being quite friendly.
Definitely will be back. Prices were great for the quality of the food we had.

It´s such a pitty that they haven´t gotten their act together. We have been there twice. The first time I pointed out that there were some mistakes in their menu. What was supposed to be vegetarian wasn´t. What wasn´t supposed to be, from the description, seemed to be and what was definitely, internationally, vegetarian (spring rolls) had been changed for that night and the chef had decided to add chicken, without letting the waiter know.

To begin with I chose the tofu aperitive. The waiter (awesomely polite) had to come back to apologize and tell me there wasn´t tofu but that I could have the spring rolls. I agreed. And ordered also a dish that was supposed to be only noodles and vegetables, as per their menu.

For starters we received a couple of rice wraps with raw vegetables. We were told they were complimentary. It was a really nice surprise. We had a choice of 4 sauces to dip them in and only one of them was not for vegetarians. The other 3 were.

When the spring rolls came, and half my way through the first one, I realized they had chicken, so they had to take them away in the midst of apologies. Then came my main dish.... with shrimp. I told the waiter that I had specified I was vegetarian so I could not have that dish. Apparently the description in their menu is incorrect. Immediately they took the dish away and prepared the same without shrimps. In exchange for the spring rolls they offered to prepare a red curry with vegetables that was totally out of this world. Delicious, but by then I had already eaten enough and could not finish it.

The waiter was really polite, I believe he was argentinian, and helped turn the whole experience into something we were willing to try again. As bizarre as it may sound the manager never showed up to apologize for so many mishaps, although he was in the premises.

2nd visit. The mistakes were still there in the menu. We sat on the same table as the previous time since we wanted to get the same waiter. This time the starter was not what we had had last time. It was something with crab, totally vegetarian unfriendly, and they didn´t have anything they could offer a vegetarian.

The waiter told me this time they did have tofu apetizer, which I ordered. He came back again apologizing because they had just ran out of it. So no apetizer for me since I didn´t want to risk finding chicken in the spring rolls again. I order the red curry with vegetables and steamed rice. I highly recommend that for vegetarians. They did get those 2 right. For dessert we decided to order the litchi frappe which we also highly recomend.

So if you are a vegetarian and want to avoid frustration you may want to try other places that are more consistent and organized. If you don´t mind frustration and some waiting time until they get your order together in exchange for delicious thai food then yes, I think you should give this restaurant a try.

PS I rated the food as excellent because, once they get it right, it is indeed excellent. I must add that my boyfriend, who is not vegetarian, had no issues on either time we visited.
