Quinta Avenida has a lot of great shops, bars and restaurants but tourists are constantly bothered by the locals trying to offer something. One of our favorite place was La Bodeguita del Medio and the Fish Spa where you can get your feet clean by fishes. A real treat. There are a few tour agencies that offer the same tours as your hotel at a much lower price.

I am a concierge for hundreds of guests a year visiting Playa Del Carmen. I am always asked where do we go? The first thing you must see when here is LA QUINTA in Spanish, in English it translates to Fift Avenenue. There is no driving on 5th ave. All shops, stores, restaurants and of course BARS! tequilla stores, gift shops and local flavor make 5th ave a must at least once during the day and once at night.

start your negociations at 3/4 of the asking prices, i.e. they ask $60 you counter with $15. I was called a bandido but I'm sure they still made a nice profit. Sports bar/restaurants are plentyful and I ate very well. Kudos to Tequila Barrel and Los Tabarnacos

I'll start by admitting that I'm one of those annoying perennial Playa visitors who say, "you should have seen it 17 years ago, it was so rustic, so funky, so laid back.." Playa, and expecially La Quinta, are not what they used to be and while we miss Old Playa, when Hotel Delfin was the biggest building around and early mornings meant lounging street dogs, not high-heeled young things tottering home from the clubs, we still enjoy the human parade that is 5th avenue. Find a table on the street and watch the world walk by. Play the "where are they from?" guessing game. Listen to the agressive salesmen run through their selection of languages, hoping you'll answer in one of them.
We don't eat on 5th (except for early morning coffee at Starbucks), and we hardly shop there either, the prices are getting crazy, and you'd hardly guess you were in Mexico...but what a grand crazy scene it is. If you want a feel of old Playa, walk down 15th Av or calle 1 sur, it's still there.

Trashy and very inauthentic - it was so depressing coming back from a meal out away from 5ta in the real Mexico to this gaudy street.
