Hotel Hacienda del Caribe
Ranked #120 of 213 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We stayed for 8 nights in February. The staff were extraordinary: helpful, friendly, and quick to help with any of our requests. They asked if we would consider moving from the first to third floor after our first night. The first floor room was fine: one queen sized bed, facing the pool, nice bathroom/shower area and a small wardrobe and safe. The new 3rd floor room had 2 queen beds, 2 room bath, dining area, fridge, and patio overlooking the street. We enjoyed our stay. The staff were helpful with suggestions for excursions, dining, and local shops to check out. We were on the EP, but has a couple of delicious breakfasts at Mr. Chilis before heading out on day long adventures. It was easy pick up and drop off right at the hotel open doors. 24 hour front desk staff was nice to have. The free wifi was intermittent but available enough while we were there that it wasn't an inconvenience. Our room and the grounds were kept spotless. I felt very safe even though it is only 1/2 block from the busiest downtown tourist street, 5th Ave, in. Playa del Carmen. A quick 2 block (less than five minute) walk to the beach.

Room Tip: They have rooms with patios facing the inner courtyard and others over look the street.

The hotel is in a great, central location, and has an attractive courtyard. Don't be fooled by pictures of the pool which is too small for a proper swim - but since it's so close to the sea it doesn't matter. The rooms are clean, unfortunately ours only had a small window and the main light didn't work - and the maintenance man wasn't able to fix it. (We were offered a change of room.) No fridge in the room although friends paying the same rate did have one. Fantastic shower with decent water pressure is a big plus point. Rooms are quiet and have air con.

Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, others not so much. Service at the bar could be very slow. The breakfast wasn't great, only a choice of two things - we ended up eating it elsewhere.

Overall then a few things that could be fixed but not bad.

We got moved to this hotel because the hotel we originally booked (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty) has overbooked themselves. The room on the third floor was comfortable, the balcony was very nice to have for an evening glass of wine, and the location of the hotel, as others have mentioned, is great -- close to everything and not directly on 5th (i.e. you can actually go to sleep before midnight should you desire to do so). The hotel is not new, but they seem to maintain the rooms (or at least our room) in a reasonable state of repair.

There are a few minor irritations:
1. They don't give you a rug or another towel to throw on the floor in front the shower. I suppose you can ask for one, but you don't think about it until you realize just how slippery wet tile is. They don't give give was face wash-cloths either. Just ask for more towels
2. They don't have locking space to store your luggage when you need to leave it with them. They will place it behind the front desk and generally around the front desk. This would almost work if there was always someone sitting at the front desk. There is not the case.

We booked last minute and couldnt find much else available but this looked nice enough for a night. The rooms were dated but clean. Tube tv on the wall, old rusty but working AC unit, decent looking beds. The cons to our room: hole in floor of shower to ??, the water pressure was next to a trickle, hot water came sporadically for the second person only, no wifi in rooms, can see day light all of the way around the door, pool is more of a plunge pool size and had to ask for towels. But, was clean, quaint, good location downtown and price was decent. I'd stay here again in a pinch.

i just spent two nights in playa del carmen. i decided to book a room that was close to everything i needed. this hotel fit the bill nicely. it is a short walk from the ferry and is right behind the ADO bus station so getting to and from either cozumel (via a $12 ferry ride) or cancun (via an $11 bus ride) is very easy and convenient. the hotel was reasonably priced and was very comfortable with a/c, ceiling fan, tv, and plenty of hot water. there is a restaurant onsite but as it was not open early enough for me,i had to eat elsewhere for brkfst. the beds were comfortable and the room was very clean. the bathroom was small and a bit run down but was not an issue. i probably would not stay here for an extended period of time but if you want a place right off 5th ave and close to transportation, this is it. i would stay here again. i stayed on the second floor and had zero issues with any bad smells as some other reviews have stated about the ground floor rooms.

We didn't book this hotel. We get an upgrate from another one. But is was not really an UP grade. We had room 101 next to the pool, ground floor. The room didn't look clean and once in the shower a frog, a snail and a cockroach make its appearence. It was smelly to! Like sleeping in a cenote. Not a healty place to stay. We were glad that is was only for 2 nights..

I was staying 14 days in Hotel Hacienda Del Caribe in April 2011. The room was a one bedroom apartment, with two huge double bed, bathroom, table, sofa, balcony, well worth. Cleanliness was on high level, I have no comment. The staff is very friendly. Once the air conditioning broke down, they repaired it very quickly. Really very helpful staff. I will forever remember mister at reception, because he was so nice and compliant.
