We stayed at the Luna Blue Feb 3rd thru Feb 9th in a tree top terrace room and found the owners & staff very helpful and knowledgeable. The other guests were extremely friendly and fun to visit with. The room itself was very nice, the grounds very tropical and extremely private.

We have stayed at an all inclusive the past few years (at 3 to 4 times the cost) and after staying here, wished we would have tried this before. Everything is so close and within easy walking distance, most folks couldnt ask for more.

While Tony & Cheri went out of their way to provide suggestions as to restaurants, we found that most restaurants close to the Luna Blue were very satisfactory. We really enjoyed the short walk each day to Mamitas beach club and the complimentary chairs and umbrella there (provided by Luna Blue)

We also took advantage of the little laundry and mini mart across from the Luna Blue which was very cheap and handy.
My wife had the need to see a doctor during our visit, and wouldnt you know it ........there was an american speaking doctor right around the corner from the hotel.

Toni & Cheri are in the process of building a small bar and hopefully this wont distract from the quiet special type of ambience of their hotel.

Unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you will be very satisfied (as we were) staying at this nice little hotel.

My husband and I stay at Luna Blue the end of January. We are not AI people but have always stayed in a beach hotel in the past. We have no regrets with Luna Blue and will return one day. The five minute walk to and from the beach was no problem. We usually stopped for a cerveza on the way back to the room. The room was neat and clean. The balconies were the best. We walked everywhere only hired one taxi to get us to an ATV excursion. I walked a lot of the beach and believe the nicest beach is infront of Mamitas Beach Club. We like to go different places to eat our meals and usually don't eat at the same place twice, but when Jamie at the front desk suggested El Fogon for good mexican food and it was, we had to go back. Cerveza's and dinner for two $18 and excellent food.
Thanks Luna Blue! We will be back.

We spent three nights at the Luna Blue before moving to the Fairmount Mayakoba to attend a company-sponsored trip. We loved both hotels.

The Luna Blue is a small, garden hotel with very comfortable accommodations. It's a place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings--beautiful, lush garden--greenery everywhere. No TV or fancy electronics; the Luna Blue is a very quiet, extremely clean, cozy hotel. Listen to early morning rain drops as you rest in a hammock on the private porch outside your room--heavenly!

We loved the Luna Blue and will return. It's in the north part of Playa Del Carmen--quieter, more upscale with many great restaurantas and shops.

Our only regret is that we didn't get a chance to spend time with the owners. We've read so many nice comments about them; and being Americans ourselves, it would have been nice to chat. However, we packed so much into our days/evenings that our schedules didn't connect. So, of course, we'll have to return to do just that.

What's not to love about Playa Del Carmen and the Luna Blue?

I stayed at the Luna Blue from 1/16/06 - 1/23/07 after reading numerous positive and glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. After staying for a week, I would like to relay my experience as objectively as possible, and let you, the reader decide whether it will be a positive experience for you. I rated this as "Okay, but some problems" for the reasons discussed below. Of course, if you do not see the answer to your question here, please email me at work and I will most likely be able to respond immediately if not by the next day (gdame@deflaw.com).

1) Cost of the Room: This hotel seems reasonably priced compared to other similar hotels if you are staying in a deluxe suite. I stayed in a standard room for $72 per night including taxes/fees/refrigerator, and note that it had the same amenities as another hotel we stayed at for $40 total (posada d’Margo). The hot water did not work unless we turned on the sink and then it only worked sporadically, it had A/C, a clock radio, safe, and a ceiling fan. The only thing that stands out is the fact that it had scented toilet paper. The room was, however, located in a safe, secure location with a tropical setting. You could barely hear the traffic or the other residents. The bottom line is this: if you are willing to pay a bit more to feel safe and secure, you should consider this hotel. If you have been to Playa before and are more willing to experiment for a better deal, try the Posada D’Margo or some place else (I have a few more suggestions if you are interested in apartment/condos with full kitchenettes).

2) Location: The hotel is 5 blocks from the beach and about a mile from where you can catch the collectivos and buses for traveling around. If you plan on taking day trips, and do not rent a car, this hotel may not be for you as it is quite a hassle traveling to the other end of town. I have more on this depending on your situation. The bottom line: It is not an ideal location for either beach or traveling, as it is far enough away from both to be a bit of a pain.

3) Service: The owners of this hotel are American and were able to direct us to a beautiful beach in Tulum, as well as some great, and cheap, Mexican restaurants. Their suggestion for car rental, however, left me paying too much, with back strain from having to lift the car to replace a tire, and unsatisfied. In fact, I strongly suggested that they re-evaluate their referral to CP Rentals, but doubt that they will despite the fact that they owner said he would "seriously look into it." I say that I doubt they will because I was also told that a plumber would be out to my room, which never happened, and I was told $45/day for a car was a fabulous deal until I complained, and then was given a look front desk receptionist like I had paid too much (which was the truth). Regardless, just in case they are still referring CP Rentals, please save yourself time and money and go to ---.com (there is an internet café 1 block away that will let you get on for $.60 for 15 minutes), get a brand new car for $11/day, and save yourself from having to drive a 1970s Beetle with no AC, power steering, radio, and side view mirror. Better yet, get a car from the airport. If you plan on traveling, a car is necessary and is just as expensive as picking up the collectivo when it is all said and done. Parking is not an issue.

My review would have been neutral had my hot water worked, or had a plumber actually come out, and had the hotel either not referred CP rentals, or agreed not to refer them again in the future. They also did not offer to pay for all or a portion of the rental (which would have been going above and beyond, but for $45 would have said a lot about their service - however, they did not make that effort).

We are a popular small hotel. Sometimes that popularity draws guests who want something different than we offer. Some guests expect a five star all inclusive resort, which we are not. Some guests expect the cheapest accommodations in town, which we also are not.

We are sorry this guest felt the standard room in our hotel was too expensive. The cost of a standard room in January of this year is $60 plus the 12% mandatory Mexican hospitality tax. Our standard rooms are, we think, pretty special. Less than a year ago they were retiled and repainted, brand new air conditioners were installed, and they were furnished with hand-carved furniture. The electrical and plumbing were replaced, and the bathrooms completely remodeled from top to bottom, including tile, fixtures, lighting, etc. We frankly think it’s a pretty good deal for 60 dollars in high season. Will you find cheaper in Playa? Absolutely. But we still think it’s a pretty good bargain.

Regarding hot water, in this case after being alerted by the guest that on one morning they could not get enough hot water, Tony said he would check out the situation, and if there was a problem he couldn’t fix, we would call a plumber. He checked things out and found there was an adequate supply of hot water. The boiler was on and the plumbing was working properly. The guest had no further complaints. We have found that most complaints from hot water are related to water pressure. Our hotel, like most small hotels in Playa, do not have the same water pressure that you will find in the US. The water in our room is pulled from storage tanks, and sometimes guests must make the water run for a few minutes to pull the hot water out of the pipes.

As for location, we think it’s pretty much perfect. We are located half a block west of Fifth Avenue. To get to the beach, you walk from Fifth Avenue to First Avenue and from First Avenue you walk down to the beach. It is no more than a five minute walk. And of course, this is the same beach advertised as accessible from many hotels in Playa which are several blocks further from us.

We’re not sure what the hassle in traveling the resort zone is. We are in the north section of Playa, about four blocks from Constituyentes, the main northern entrance to the resort area, and about 13 blocks from Juarez, the main southern entrance to the resort area. It takes no more than 15 minutes to stroll anywhere in the resort area. It’s even a shorter distance to walk to highway 307 (the main highway going north and south from Cancun to Tulum) to catch a bus or colectivo there. Or, if you prefer, it is 14 pesos (about $1.30 US) for a taxi ride from our hotel to anywhere in the resort zone.

Finally, we don’t rent cars. From the moment you get off the airplane in Cancun, you’ll be deluged with offers of car rentals. If you don’t take advantage of one of those offers, you’ll find numerous car rental options in Playa del Carmen, including several national American chains. When guests ask us for a recommendation, we explain this to them but also inform them of a small local company which has the added benefit of being willing to bring the car to the hotel and pick it up from there afterwards. We make that recommendation because we feel most people don’t want to spend time and effort going to and from a car pickup location. The company we recommend has been honest and reliable, and their rates are comparable to most others in the area. It is not our company and no guest is required to use it. Every guest is made aware that there are other options.

When this guest approached our receptionist, he asked to rent a car for $15 a day, saying he could get a car online for that price. Our receptionist, and later Tony, said the same thing to him: we know of no such rental rate in Playa. We suggested that if he could get a car for $15 a day, he should do so. Instead, the guest booked through the company we suggested for $45 a day.

No, we did not offer to pay for part of this guest’s car rental fee. Had he asked (which he did not) for such contribution we would have said no. We are not a travel agency. We are a hotel. We offer guests as many suggestions, ideas, services and assistance as we can. But if you decide to book a rental car, the responsibility is yours. The cost of your rental car is no more our obligation than the cost of your dinner at El Fogón or your entrance fee to Xel-ha. We want our guests to have a good time when they’re in Playa del Carmen, but our interest in their vacation does not extend to helping finance it. :)

My husband and I stayed at Luna Blue for 11 nights and we loved it. The room had a kitchen and a balcony and was quiet, clean and very livable. The staff was extremely helpful in finding great restaurants and tips for sightseeing. The hotel is a few blocks from the beach and we spent many hours at the beachclub enjoying the included chairs and palapa. The owners are American and obviously love being in Playa and sharing their knowledge of the area with guests. They are adding a bar and a sitting area and it should add to the ambiance. We really needed a break from home and the Luna Blue was just perfect for us. If you want a small hotel that is well located, quiet, pretty setting and friendly, this is it.

My family & I spent a week at The Luna Blue over Christmas. This was our first stay at a non-AI hotel....& it was incredible! We now cannot imagine staying anywhere else! The hotel is absolutely charming. The front desk & housekeeping staff are by far the most helpful & friendly staff we have met in all our travels. We had a kitchenette room that was fully equipped with everything we needed.....even a blender!:) The A/C is remote controlled & keeps the room nice & cool...Our room was quiet & very clean & the bed was the most comfortable we have slept on. We had a very nice sitting area with a hammock & we spent many evenings relaxing out there....They also have wireless internet which is great. The gates are locked at 10pm (don't worry you get a key) & there is a night watchman on all night....very safe! The gardens are absolutely beautiful....you have to see them to appreciate their beauty.....

The Luna Blue is just a minute walk to 5th Avenue & many many restaurants, shopping & bars. As well it is a short walk to the beach....Mamitas Beach Club passes are included so you get a complimentary palapa & lounge chairs! The North End of Playa where the hotel is located is our favorite part of town.

The main thing that sets Luna Blue apart from the rest are the owners Tony & Cheri. They are the nicest people you could meet! They are so genuinely concerned with making your visit to Luna Blue special. This was our first Christmas away from home & I have to say that the warmth & hospitality we felt at Luna Blue made us feel right at home!

Thank you Tony & Cheri & staff at Luna Blue!! We cannot wait to see you again! :)

We (5 of us) stayed in two rooms at the Luna Blue from Dec 29th thru Jan 7th. We had a marvelous time. On New Years Eve we even partied with the two desk clerks which made us feel even more at home and safe during our vacation. The hotel is clean with beautiful towel arrangements every day. Tony and Cheri go out of their way to give you good travel advice and helped us rent a car and visit Tulum, Akumal, and a Playa Paradaiso with ease. We will all return soon and plan to recommend Luna Blue to everyone who travels to Playa.
