We stayed here as our first visit to Playa, and look forward to visiting again. We arrived early and Tony got a room ready for us very soon...breakfast cakes were still out!. The feel of the place is like a tropical hideaway--one second you're on the street in the middle of shops and restaurants, and the next you're in a lush, quiet garden. I loved the shady pool-the cool water was refreshing and invigorating. Our room included a nice patio with table and chairs, bottled water, and a fridge. We walked to the corner OXXO store for sodas and snacks and kept them handy and cold. The bar was friendly, Jorge the bartender made fantastic margaritas with fresh-squeezed lime juice, and every staff person was helpful and attentive. One of our towel sculptures was so cute we couldn't bear to dismantle it! Will definitely return.

Luna Blue is right in the middle of where the action is in Playa del Carmen. It is a quick walk to the beach club (you get free passes for chairs/umbrellas from the front desk), and restaurants are everywhere. The staff is also very friendly. What keeps this place from 5 stars to me are the amenities. It is bare bones. For example, there is no TV in your room and you get a water cooler. The bar wasn't in service when I was there due to the bartender being sick. There is a pool which is kind of like a lagoon setup but I recommend using some bugspray before you hang out there. Luna Blue is the perfect to place to stay if you just need a comfy place to crash after hanging out at the beach and partying. If you want something more luxurious/upscale, check out ME Playa which is next door.

We stayed at the Luna Blue hotel the Christmas week after our wedding for our honeymoon. The hospitality of all the people that worked there was so welcoming and made us feel so comfortable. The property was cozy and we really loved the garden, pool, and hotel bar. The only downside was that the hotel next door has a rooftop bar and our hotel room was located right next door--they had thumping techno beats Thurs-Saturday nights, which was disappointing because the rest of the time our stay there was so peaceful.

Room Tip: Treetop terrace rooms are private and you have your own hammock

Thank you so much for staying with us and for your nice review. We are glad you loved our hotel and staff. We would like to apologize for the noise you experienced from the hotel next door, Be Playa. The two weeks during the Christmas and New Years holiday are the busiest time of year in Playa del Carmen, and it is unfortunately customary for people and businesses to have loud parties during that time. This time of year is certainly the exception and not the rule. That hotel also has its yearly anniversary party during that time, and as much as we’d like to prevent it, there isn’t much we can do. Our hotel is generally pretty peaceful all the time, and we do apologize that there were times during your stay that weren’t.

We hope to see you again the next time your travels bring you to Playa del Carmen.

I have stayed at Luna Blue, 10 times I think it is...since 2009. I think this is my first review too...how did that happen? I love it and it is truely my "happy place". It's tropical and peaceful and the stress just melts away when I'm there. I cannot say enough about the staff...they are wonderful. Jorge is also a sweetie and absolutely is the best bar tender in Playa. Tony & Cheri have created the ultimate no frills, paradise getaway. Simple, clean, comfortable and best of all conveniently located.
If you stay here and are disappointed, then you didn't pay attention to the details and are too hard to please.

Room Tip: You have options based on your needs but all rooms are good.

Stayed at the Luna Blue for a week in November 2013. After reading reviews for months before going we were looking forward to being there. Much to our disappointment it was not what was in the reviews. The rooms were dated but clean. The desk help was very good. The bar which has swings was nice looking. The bar is very expensive to drink at. We had three shots of tequila for $30.00. The margaritas were not as good as had been stated in the reviews. The pool has little or no sun. So if you want to lay by the pool you will get no sun. After traveling to Mexico for some 20 years this is not a place we would return to.

We are glad that this guest liked the cleanliness of our rooms, our location and the helpfulness of our staff, but are sorry they found us “dated.” Truthfully, we do not want to be new and glitzy like so many modern resorts and try hard to keep that “old Playa” feel. We strive to maintain the atmosphere of a traditional Playa inn or posada. Some folks enjoy that, others don’t. We regret this guest was disappointed.

We are also sorry they were disappointed with their free margaritas. Everyone seems to have a strong opinion about how margaritas should be made, and we feel bad if ours did not meet this guest’s expectations. Many people comment that our margaritas are the best in town, and we happen to agree. But we long ago learned that everyone has different tastes. For example, Cheri prefers our house margarita and Tony prefers the Papa T margarita. Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes.

As for the suggestion that we charge too much for a tequila shot ($10 USD), we have to disagree. We serve several different of types of tequila, and our prices range from $4 US for our house tequila to just under $10 US for Don Julio 1847 or Clase Azul. One can easily order a less-expensive tequila if one wishes, or go top shelf if that is his preference. And as is true in most places, you will save money if you pay in pesos rather than dollars. Overall, we believe our prices are as good as or better than most bars around town.

Finally we have to note that our pool does in fact get quite a bit of sun throughout the day, as photos and videos of our pool events show. We also regularly cut back the nearby trees to keep the area sunny. However these guests stayed with us during a time of particularly rainy and cloudy weather. Perhaps that is why they were left with this impression.

We wish we could please everyone, but unfortunately sometimes we can’t. However this won’t stop us from continuing to strive to give people the best experience we know how to, at the most reasonable prices.
