“Charming, Friendly place”
Reviewed February 22, 2012

After sorting thru hundreds of Trip Advisor hotel reviews for inexpensive hotels, we settled on Luna Blue and it is a winner! (Actually, we spent 2 nights at an expensive hotel as Luna Blue had no openings for the week-end and it was wonderful too as it is on the beach but for funky and fun, this is a great place.) The rooms are basic but very nice--tho the beds are hard! The great tropical courtyard and the friendly bar are the highlights. (However, a few more chairs and hammocks would be nice.) The courtyard and balconies have several levels, all looking down into the bar and pool. People start gathering at the bar around 5 and some come from other hotels. Most have been coming back for years.

We were there 5 nights and there was great live Blues 4 of those nights so you better like the Blues! (Stops by ll pm, tho. so you can sleep.) There was a special birthday party all Sunday aft with several groups playing so it was 5 hours of the Blues plus food. We were fortunate to have Rm 35 some of those nights and it has a great balcony overlooking everything. However, you aren't far away with any of the rooms. Just off 5th Avenue with all the shops and restaurants but toward the nicer part of the avenue. Terrific selection of beaches with free chairs and we didn't get to all of them. (If you have a car, drive down to Tulum and visit the beaches--gorgeous and few people. Try Ziggy's Beach club but it's a ways.) Our only minor complaint was that we hoped to be able to sort out some of the parks and attractions with the staff and there wasn't that opportunity. However, want to mention that Alex, who handles the front desk is just wonderful! He is very helpful--and all the staff is so cheerful! This is a great value for the money mainly for the fun atmosphere.

We can't recommend any particular restaurant--they run together and all are OK but the Cuban restaurant at the north end might be one to check out.

Room Tip: Rm 35 is really nice. Wouldn't choose Rm 9 as it is high up and narrow steps. If you don'...

My husband and I recently spent 8 days at Luna Blue. Our experience was positive. Our favorite things were the lovely tropical courtyard area, pool area, friendly English speaking staff, bar and clean rooms. Location is just a ½ block off the 5th Ave. business area and the beach is about 4 blocks away, lots of great restaurants & shopping in walking distance.
We stayed in a “Tropical Hideaway” room which is at the courtyard level as the larger rooms were booked. Our room was clean, functional and made use of the space very well. The bathroom clean, the shower was great and always plenty of hot water. The hotel provides organic soaps, shampoo, cream rinse and body lotion that were very nice. There is no hair dryer (although I was told the front desk has them if needed). There was no closet, instead a functional piece of furniture that provided hanging space with plenty of hangers (one of my pet peeves) and 2 clothing drawers. The room was cleaned daily and when we returned to our room each afternoon there was some sort of lovely towel art on our bed (it is those special things that make a difference!) We had plenty of windows in our room, but since it was on the ground level we found that we kept the curtains closed all the time. Our only suggestion for those rooms would be to add some sort of sheer or blind that allows for privacy and provides natural light. Air conditioning & wireless worked great! A mini-fridge and bottled water was a nice plus.
We enjoyed the bar area and nice live music 3 nights a week. It provided a nice opportunity to get to know the other hotel guests and discuss daily adventures and different restaurants to try. Jorge makes a great Margarita! The only downside to the bar was that it is closed 2 nights a week! The hotel provides passes to 3 beach clubs, the closest one being Mamita’s. We used Mamita’s twice, but found the loud techno music a little much for our 50+ ears. We loved the Grand Coral beach club which is just a short cab ride away. Very few people, lovely beach & pool area, and nice peaceful setting (Hint: get a chair farthest away from the club if you don’t want to listen to the music).
We chose Luna Blue for several reasons. We are not into the all-inclusive thing, we wanted to experience more of the real Mexico, try all the different restaurants and go on different day adventures. We are glad we did!

We, (three of us) had a wonderful stay at Luna Blue Feb. 2012. Lovely gardens, pool and bar on site. Wonderful breakfast breads and coffee every morning. Our room was perfect, with a double bed, single and a pull out under the single, kitchen with large table and chairs was very handy. It was a true gem very close to every thing. We loved our stay and hope to return soon. Alex was fabulous, friendly and very helpful!!!

Our second stay at the Luna Blue, and they just keep getting better! There are many things I love about the Luna Blue, and all the excellent reviews here are very accurate. Tony and Cheri continue to improve what is already excellent. The beautiful courtyard is even more gorgeous with the addition of the pool. The amenities offered are even better with the addition of coffee and (banana!) breads in the morning. Clean, charming, friendly and personal, convenient, and all the amenities they offer - I can't think of anything more they could do. They keep raising the bar. Thank you for another wonderful stay! Angie and Kevin

We enjoyed everything about our stay at Luna Blue. The hotel rooms were nice. Our patio was wonderful. The people who work at Luna Blue are top notch. Alex was very helpful with any questions we had. They have a bar that has live music most evenings but all is quiet by 11pm so you can get some sleep. They serve complimentary coffee and breakfast breads each morning at the front desk. We will be back next year!

This small hotel has a good location as it is only a stone-throw away from the busy (and touristy) 5th Ave, and it offers free umbrella and chairs at Mamita's Beach Club, which is a short walk (5-minute at most). They have connections with other beach clubs as well, but the other ones are farther away. I love the hotel garden as it is very relaxing to sit there. The garden is lush and well-maintained. And three nights a week, there is live music at the bar area from 8 to 11pm. There is also a pool which we never had the chance to use. Free cake, tea/coffee is served in the morning as a light breakfast.

We stayed in the cheapest room, which I think it's the small rooms on the ground level. Our room faces the garden and there are lawn chairs just outside our room. The room itself is clean and functional. The only minor issue is that it can get stuffy as there isn't a window - the glass door with screen functions as the window. So we can only turn on the air conditioning to keep the room cooler. I think it is probably better with the slightly more expensive rooms as they have more windows. Next time, we'll give those rooms a try.

The staff and the owner are friendly, knowledgeable and provide good restaurant suggestions. We stayed away from the restaurants on 5th Ave after the first night. If you want to try out more authentic Mexican food, walk north, away from the touristy strip. You'll find cheaper and better food. Bring a small flashlight as some of the side streets aren't very well lit at night. But we felt really safe to walk around in the non-touristy parts of town.

Stayed at Luna four days with wife, 26 year old daughter and her ex-college sorority sister. We all were impressed with Luna's owners, staff and boutique hotel amenities. Location is perfect for partying, restaurants, beach scene and shopping. The two girls and I hiked about the area for three of the four days. Go over to the beach, turn right about 3/4 mile to Senor Frog and return by Fifth Avenue and you will walk past at least 60 restaurants and bars of every description as well as equally numerous tourist stands, silver shops and high end luxury goods. Favorite restaurant was "Capricci Latino" 80 yards away. Close second choice restaurant "Tierra Madre" 450 yards away. Daily specials and happy hour deals abound. Another hike.. again to beach..turn left.. perhaps one mile, you will leave tourist zone. Being adventurous, we headed inland on swampy, dirt path into the "less fortunate" neighborhood of Playa. At no time, during 10 plus miles by foot through Playa del Carmen did we feel threatened in any way. Wish I could say the same about my home town.

May I offer a few tips to first timers? Cancun airport full of official looking greeters who delay you with time share, hotel/transportation deals or other inducements. Walk swiftly past them with a smile and a "No, gracias" until you get outside where more legitimate transportation awaits. Next tip..always confirm taxi prices before getting in cab, always. Lastly, if you decide to enter any of the street vendors shops on delightful Fifth Avenue, a useful phrase is "Sola estoy mirando, gracias". Translated as " I'm only looking, thanks." Hope you enjoy the Luna Blue and the fun, safe town of Playa as much as I did.
