Nestled in between some larger hotels, Playa Maya is the perfect place to escape to. Clean rooms, outstanding service (Sergio and Wilbur to name just two) and the beautiful scenery made the stress disappear. Just a short walk away from 5th avenue and you can shop, drink and eat your way to heaven.

We stayed at this small hotel in 2013 and loved it. So, we decided to return with family in June 2016. A few issues. I would give it a lower rating if it were not for the fantastic service staff on the beach. We understood that the adjoining hotel had been under construction for about a year and unfortunately assumed that they were further along in the process to maybe just interior work. We were wrong. The construction noise from the adjoining hotel in unrelenting from 8am to 6pm, mon thru sat and sometimes as early as 6am. Sunday, they take off and you can sleep in. No siestas for you in the afternoon. Concrete hammer drills all day long. Structural steel falling onto the adjoining concrete roof deck and reverberating throughout the hotel. They could not keep the pool and spa clean due to the construction debris. We certainly couldn't use it. I felt bad for the beach staff because it appeared that they lost a lot of the guest and lunch crowd. I highly recommend passing on this hotel until you can confirm that the adjoining construction is complete. We should have. It would have been very thoughtful for hotel management to give a disclaimer about the construction. Now for the good news. Food and beach service is still great. Location on the beach and near 5th Ave at night is still great. Laundry service is very cheap (about $5.50 for a 13-gallon trash bag full). Leave most of your cloths at home and just have a few laundered same day. The family suite was good for my family of 5 with two futons to spare.

Room tip: Higher is better for the view

We stayed at Playa Maya with another couple and had 2 rooms for a week. We absolutely loved the Playa Maya. The small restaurant, bar was also a great treat. The beach needed a little work but the tides were high and had taken some sand away but will bring it back in near time. The rooms were clean and large. AC worked perfectly. Rooms were bright which is not always the case in Mexico. The staff wwas the best. Always pleasant and helpful. Location for going into town could not have been any better. I just referred a friend to Playa Maya who made their reservation this week. That shows how much I thought of the Playa Maya.

Room tip: either tower- top floor facing ocean - we had them both

My boyfriend and I spent four nights at this hotel. It certainly has it's charms, though several of the issues mentioned by some of the other reviewers persisted during our stay as well.

The hotel has many positive aspects. It is fairly small, and uncrowded at least during our stay. The rooms are always impeccably clean, kudos to the cleaning staff. We appreciated the availability of drinking water free of charge on the property, in addition to the bottled water left in the room. Finally, the ocean view rooms have a very nice view of the water, and it was nice to stay on a beachfront property with ocean breezes on hot days. The room prices are very economical. The restaurant servers were very friendly and accomodating.

That being said, there were a couple of down sides. The beach in front of the hotel is very narrow, and large, moss-covered rocks prevent comfortably wading into the water. Also, as mentioned by others construction is ongoing throughout the day to the properties on either side of the hotel. You should not expect any quiet between 8 a.m. and 6ish p.m. Finally, the beach-only access posed two problems for us: First, tour companies and a delivery company had a hard time finding the hotel, delaying our schedules a bit. Second, your feet will always be covered with sand, such that sand is tracked into the room and your feet look less than nice when you leave the property for dinner, for example.

Overall I had a nice stay at this hotel. If you go in aware of and content with the minor issues, you will have a nice stay as well.

Our last review was in 2014... but I believe that an update would be helpful... especially since the owners of Playa Maya have made additional investments in updating the property that would appeal to more people interested in staying there!

Full disclosure... my wife and I (as well as other family members and friends) have been staying at Playa Maya over the past ten years... and enjoy every trip down!

To keep this review short, and to the point, there are three things that we place heavy consideration on when selecting a hotel property... Quality, Service, and Value.

The hotel is exactly how it is described on their website... on the beach, and "your home away from home"! This is a small property (approx 20 rooms), and is centrally located with easy access to the beach, 5th Avenue (main shopping district), and various modes of transportation to other parts of Mexico (i.e. bus station, ferry terminals, taxi and/or car rental).

Basing in Playa del Carmen makes for easy access to: the ruins (Coba, Tulum, Chichen Itza), the beach clubs of Tulum, and the general Cancun area... and, I left out two interesting island locations... Cozumel, and Isla Mujeres!

Quality... the rooms are spotless/clean, the maid service is excellent! The hotel property always appears to have personnel working on cleaning, painting, and general upkeep... which is a sign that their management and people care about the guest experience! The recent upgrades to the location are the addition of a new sundeck, and open seating area for a nice opportunity to to relax. They've also removed one (of two) palapas in the dining area, moved the bar up front, and made for an even better dining experience for the guests.

Service... the fact that there are many employees that remain with the management is a testament to how they are treated by the owners. There are many employees that are still there since the very first time at the property... and while I'll probably miss a few names, there are many worthy of recognition... Juan, Carlos, Pablo, Rikki, Aniseto, and Angelina... to name a few! If you stay at Playa Maya, I am certain that you'll meet them... they do an excellent job at ensuring the guests are well taken care of.

Value... The hotel made some modifications to the room rates this past year... by reducing them 30% across the board... while still including a great breakfast selection each morning for their guests. It's really a "no-brainer" when compared with other properties that Playa Maya is worthy of strong consideration!

Some additional comments... please note that Playa del Carmen (in general) has a lot of construction going on. On this past trip, there were two properties adjacent to Playa Maya that were under demolition/construction. One of those properties has now been completed, with the other one right behind! All of the work occurs during the daytime... and was not a problem when we were there.

Also, the beach itself undergoes changes throughout the year...depending upon tidal movement, etc... so one day, the sand can extend far up to the waterline, and other days, it could be closer in! It's never a problem, since there is always easy access to the beach from the hotel. One other beach-related point brought up in other reviews... Sargassum (a brown seaweed)... also determined by mother nature... and no sing'e place is immune from it when it decides to come onshore. With that said, most hotel staff are out early each morning to rake it up... and it's not a problem!

To sum all of this up... great staff, great location, and a great base for other exploration throughout the Yucatan Peninsula!

Room tip: Second or Third floors provide for a quieter experience, with decent views of the surf and Cozumel (on clear days).
