We just returned from our trip to Playa del Carmen and staying at Playa Maya was fantastic. The location is great, on the beach and still close to 5th Ave. This area at Calle 8 has a very nice stretch of beach with two big palapa’s right in front of the hotel with tables and chairs to sit and enjoy some great food and relaxing views of the Caribbean and sound of waves. Playa Maya is not a big hotel, with 12 rooms that vary in size and amenities with clean, safe rooms. We stayed in an upper floor room with amazing views looking across to Cozemel and the blue heavenly sea. The staff is wonderful and very helpful, they go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay. There is a security stationed out front at night and they check everyone coming in after hours. Breakfast is included with various choices and ample portions, lunches of fish taco’s, cocoanut shrimp (best in PDC) whole fried fish and fresh ceviche are available and can be served right on the beach while sitting in loung chairs with umbrellas that are included. Good variety of ice cold beer and mixed drinks are all available for purchase at good prices.
We plan to be back ay Playa Maya in December 2014 for our 40th Anniversary

Room Tip: Tip the staff, they are great!!!

We just returned from Hotel Playa Maya after an 18 night stay, which included Christmas and new year's. This was our second stay at Playa Maya and it delivered wonderfully again!

There are many things we enjoy so much about this hotel; its proximity to the beach - actually it is right ON the beach. You don't need to wear sandals when you leave your room, because you walk right out onto the sand, where you can first have breakfast and then relax in one of the hotel's ocean front lounge chairs.

The staff are so friendly and customer oriented. So many of the same staff were still at the hotel as when we visited one year ago. Juan, Louis, Jesus, Sergio, Anacieto, Alberto, Carlos, Luciano, Pablo and Angelina once again were all wonderful. (Marasol provided a great afternoon massage) Even the night security guard Antonio was super friendly. Quality customer service is one of the features that sets this hotel apart from others.

The rooms are not luxurious. If you like five star accommodations, this may not be the place for you. The hotel is clean, very well kept, very comfortable, and bug free. We had a king size bed, mini fridge, flat screen TV with a DVD player, a spacious room and plenty of hot water.

The food from the restaurant in Hotel Playa Maya is delicious. The club sandwich, tuna salad, fish tacos, and paella were all great. In addition to great food, their prices are also very reasonable - although some breakfast options are included for hotel guests - and those too are very good.

I would highly recommend this hotel to others who want a beach front hotel, two minutes from 5th avenue in Playa Del Carmen, offering great service and value. We are already planning our next stay at the hotel next Christmas!

This was our second vacation in Playa del Carmen and first at Playa Maya. I am quite particular about things such as cleanliness, customer service, and security. These things no- one can dispute with this property. The more obvious feature of this hotel is price for the location. YOU CAN NOT BEAT THE VALUE OF THIS VACATION DESTINATION. Read the reviews and be assured they are pretty accurate. Unless you are strictly high end and price is of no concern, this is the place.
We have already paid for our 2014 July stay and 30 year anniversary celebration.

My wife and I ages around 55 stayed here 22 Nov. 2013 for 8 days. People who staffed the hotel were so friendly. Everyone gave us the time of day when we had questions. Breakfast was great with plenty of variety and food. Coffee was ok too but we brought some coffee with us because we are rather fussy about our coffee in Canada. The entrance from the beach was no big deal. Hotel is very secure. Safe is easy to use. Wifi worked with no problems. I would come back to this place again forsure. Hopefully to see the same people working there.. Hope the owner sees this review and reward the staff for hard work there. Really makes a difference.. And tipping here goes a long way and is appreciated.. Coming back..Bill and Lynn...
oh yes, Walk to wal-mart for beer, food wine and what else do you need.
Playa del Carmen is safe. Enjoy the shop owners in the street they are funny. We tried eating at different resturants but read tripadvisor first. My food places have the tripadvisor sign so watch for it. Now go enjoy Mexico.

Room Tip: Balcony a tad tight but ok. Bring your own coffee and filters.

4th stay at Playa Maya. We split time on this anniversary vacation between this hotel and an all-inclusive. While my wife prefers the latter, I like local flavor, and this can be found a block off of Quinta Avenida.

Pros

Location - this hotel is on the beach in the heart of Playa Del Carmen, a little night noise from the south, but nothing disturbing. 4 blocks from Wal-mart, where you can buy national and international liquors (especially tequila) at really great prices. One block from 5th avenue, bars and restaurants. The beach is beautiful here, not as narrow nor as broad as in the past, but no rock issues, etc.

Staff Front desk staff 2 of three outwardly friendly the third more reticent but certainly not rude. Beach staff wonderful, especially Juan. Breakfast, the included breakfast varied a little everyday. This is the only place in Mexico I have ever had really good quality and cooked bacon.

Rooms - the rooms are not lavish, but comfortably furnished. Any issue we had was promptly fixed and one issue we didn't mention, some air-conditioning noise, was also fixed. View was fantastic day and night.

Playa del Carmen in general - it continues to grow. The annoying time share vendors had been replaced by annoying shopkeepers and massage entreaties. There seems to be a little economic desperation, and perhaps there is some massage training facility which is pumping out the masseuses. Town is still a lot of fun, but I might be ready for Tulum for a more laid back experience.
