Carlos does a first rate job of the tequila demonstration and many other activities. He makes it fun while transferring a ton of information. The many other staff, some of whom have been with Fishermen's for years, are also outstanding. So pleasant, courteous, and genuinely happy to help you.

You won't find a better location right on the beach unless you want to mingle with thousands.

My wife and i both love to travel, and we have been many places together.

We have been to Fisherman's several times now over the last 6 years and have been very impressed with each visit.

The staff is exceptional, Antonio (Server), Marciel (Front door), Priscilla (consierge), Rosario (waitress/matridee), Raul (server), Andy (Chef) Carlos and David (recreation directors), And Guamel in security .
These are only a few of the people there that made our stay very worth while.

The cleaning staff always had a smile for us as well... They were super efficient and thorough and were in and out of our rooms in no time.

One of the things that really stood out to us, is everyone working there that we came in contact with made sure to interact with our little man (he was 11months old) and that kept him very entertained with everyone talking and joking with him and teaching him some of his first Spanish words!

My Spanish is not good... Respectively, most of the staff there spoke amazing English, and those that were not 100% bilingual were more than willing to try and speak to us, and try to learn anything we could pass on to them and vice versa.

I would highly recommend a visit or stay at Sunset Fisherman's to my friends and family, they took great care of us, it was a clean enviroment without the extreme cost to be in such a beautiful atmosphere.
Thank you to all the staff at Sunset Fisherman's !!
Cheers
Marty

We recently spent a month at Fishermens....our third Christmas there with family. We keep returning because of the beach, which is the best and also one of the few to be cleaned daily if needed. The staff are so accomodating, starting with Marcial to greet you and extending to Rosario and all the wait staff, Carlos and David for keeping everyone entertained, maintenance and housekeeping....all have a friendly Hola. A pleasant surprise this year, was the food in the dining room....we enjoyed an excellent Christmas Eve dinner, with a choice of entrees and some fine Mayan Coffee. The rooms certainly need to be updated and the pool chairs replaced, but the new umbrellas were appreciated. A small, friendly locale, a pleasant walk to 5th Avenue....a great winter getaway.

Room Tip: Most two bedroom units have stairs to climb

My husband and I bought at Sunset Fisherman in 2005 and have been coming almost every year since. This year we were saddened to see Luis has left and has an Art Gallery on 5th with his wife, Tara. We wish them well.

David Garcia is second in command under Carlos for Entertainment on the resort, and David has been exceptional all week, We had done all the stretching and yoga classes and clearly has studied to know the proper moves. David is a self starter, ambitious in that he reads to learn in all that he wants to know. He learned English by buying a book and CD and has taught himself, working diligently every day for several years. I admire anyone with that amount of drive, and by the way his English is excellent. He is quiet and shy but is so very kind and helpful with all the guests at the resort, and clearly, David Garcia is a very hard worker!

Camarista Maria Ines is our turn down gal...and she makes the most magnificent swans and other animals out of towels. Our bed is always beautifully decorated when we return from dinner each night...we have met her and she's a sweet young gal.

I should talk about the food.. pity they lost Chef Oscar as the chef overseeing all of the Sunset resorts...a nice increase in salary would have kept him I hear. However the menu has improved at the upper restaurant but the food has declined at the lower beach restaurant. My system is highly sensitive to MSG and so I brought it to the attention of the new chef here. She will look into it....I have had MSG reactions on several occasions. I have really enjoyed the meals at the upper restaurant. I should also say that Antonio is an exceptional waiter in the beach front restaurant and serves all the guests quickly, efficiently and is awesome. I don't believe the cold and overcooked food problem has anything to do with him...he is excellent at what he does.

Room Tip: Always ask for an ocean view...all the rooms are so differently laid out that it's hard to pick...

As resort member, I have written reviews of the resort previously. Our last visit was a huge disappointment and left us with many questions.
Having provided the hotel with opportunity to respond and their failure to do so, I'll begin with concerns:
We made note of a request for a ground level studio when we made our reservation, and e-mailed the same request prior to arrival. This was not honored.
We agreed to a visit to Tre Rios as we were interested In seeing the plans for the new Fishermen. When DH became ill and we were unable to attend, the Concierge accused us of lying to get out of attending. We were asked to come to the lobby to speak with a supervisor.
Non-members were showered with gifts of wine, fruit, chocolate covered strawberries, etc. (I'm sure these are incentives to purchase) When we inquired, we were told all guests were treated the same, and promised a bottle of wine would be delivered (never happened).
We discovered that guests who had traded into the resort through RCI were paying half price for the AI meal plan (when we made our reservations, we were told that by pre-paying, members were guaranteed the lowest price, not so). Hence, the poor rating for value.
No wi-fi connectivity in our unit.
The shower just dripped, no pressure whatsoever, it took three days to have maintenance show up and after "the repair", there was little improvement.
The promised upgrades to units have not happened - we did see the model unit. It's okay, but not a huge improvement.
There was constant confusion over bracelet colors. (We did not purchase the AI for each day and the desk staff had no idea what to do, even though we were very specific upon check-in, repeatedly telling them whuch days we were dining,) We were told by Ana that our contract required us to purchase the plan for consecutive days. (Our contract has no such language and we had a very difficult time, and many heated discussions to get what we had paid for and were entitled to.)
Following a day in Cozumel, Ana scolded us in the middle of the lobby for leaving the resort without informing them (They charged us for the meal plan and we weren't even there!)
When we tried to address our concerns to Ana, we were told outright lies, she was rude and told us we were "too picky". Pablo was not helpful and the manager, Dana (sp?) was sympathetic but told us she had no authority over the concierges or RCI concerns,
The pool closed early because the maintenance crew wanted to add chemicals.
We were annoyed by some staff members' solicitation of positive Tripadvisor reviews, evidently they are rewarded for being mentioned specifically by name. One even passed out slips of paper with the TA website and hs name.
Since this was the first time we had a less than satisfactory experience at Fishermen I wrote a letter upon my return. A month went by without a reply and I e-mailed an inquiry and was told my concerns were being addressed, nothing else,
So, onto the positives:
The beach is gorgeous.
The resort is clean - kudos to the ever-hardworking housekeeping staff.
The waitstaff and bartenders are fantastic, we love Jose (no, he did not ask us to mention him). He makes the best fresh coconut drinks and sangrita in the world!)
And iof course being greeted at the front by Marciel makes us feel like our vacation has truly begun.
The Poor rating for service is based on the front desk services only, the rest of the staff deserves Excellent.
Although we truly love this resort, we left with a sour tasteI hope that these issues are resolved before our next visit. We now have no interest whatsoever at hearing about the pans for the new resort until they address how to treat guests respectfully and truthfully. (As an aside, we visited a Palace Resot in Cozumel on a day pass and were treated like royalty! This was not a timeshare pitch, purely a paid day pass.)

Just spent 3 weeks at the Sunset Fishermen. Beautiful location, wonderful setting. The staff is the key here, when you take the time to talk with them, they go out of their way to make you fill at home. I have been coming here since 2007. Marcell meets you upon arrivel and know your name and wants to catch up, Selmo will keep you in pool towls and has a great sense of humor, Davi the entertainment pro keeps you busy all day and is very humorus, hey he even took my wife sailing and she did not get seasick, Now I can Put her to work on the fishing boat. Thanks Davi. Then the restaurant personel oh wow they can keep you feeling like royaltiy remembering what you like and were you like to sit, thank you Jose, Antoni,Rosa, Manual,Elizabeth, and Adain who helped my dad with his spanish. And if you need help with golf or arraingments Mariem is your women. Thanks to all the staff along with managment Danny and Pablo for the great enviroment. Only thing I would put a C on is the furniture it really needs updating.

In terms of the complaint about loud music below, there is far worse, so I wouldn't let this keep you from trying Fisherman's Village. You can definitely tune it out, and if it's total peace and quiet you want, rent your own place! Plus, the "noise" is barely audible on parts of the beach, which by the way is fantastic. Unlike a lot of the larger resorts, the beach in front of Fisherman's Village isn't crowded, so there is no need to be sandwiched next to people you don't even know. This kind of "entertainment" isn't really my thing either, but the fact there were people participating in the salsa lessons, bingo games, and water aerobics etc. suggests that many guests in fact liked it. That said, I could have done without Carlos' incessant commentary during the Mexican Fiesta buffet (held on the beach every Sunday.) He kept on talking over the Mariachi Band, but again, some folks seemed to enjoy his banter.

The location of Fisherman's Village is excellent--about a ten to fifteen minute walk to Playa del Carmen through a quiet residential street that borders the beach. The town itself is actually quite interesting once you get away from Fifth Avenue, which consists in blocks and blocks of tourist traps, men trying to sell you Cuban cigars and largely overpriced restaurants. (The real Mexican restaurants aren't as "pretty", but the food is far better and you won't get ripped off.)

All units are close to the ocean, so it's not like some resorts, where you literally have to take a shuttle bus through the complex to get to the beach.

While a fresh coat of paint wouldn't hurt in some places, overall Fisherman's Village is clean, with the exception of when we arrived. We had rented our unit from an owner who uses a different housekeeping service from the rest of the resort, and the state of our rooms just didn't give us full confidence they had been cleaned very well--sticky buttons on the sound system, food on one of the remote controls, crumbs on the toaster, stains on walls, etc. As part of our rental agreement, we had to pay for maid service three times during our stay, and when the maid came three days after we arrived, she did an excellent job. So in retrospect, I should have requested it be done right away.

Some of the employees at the resort are excellent: Marcial at the front entrance, Angel and the bar and Antonio, who unlike the other waiters, made sure all guests whether they were on the beach or by the pool, always had the drinks they wanted. Unfortunately, employees at the front desk are indifferent at best. I'm all for practicing my Spanish, but it is surprising that the English of some of the folks in this key customer relations role would be so weak. It's also weird that the resort continually ran out of mint. Sure, there were a few of us drinking mojitos, but you would think they would realize this is a somewhat popular vacation drink.

You cannot drink the tap water at Fisherman's Village. This is not a big deal unless the resort sometimes sells "recycled" bottles of water, which I and other guests suspected it does. Most of the bottles I purchased there tasted fine, but one a couple of occasions, they tasted funny. I was sick only once, and this was after making the mistake of drinking one in its entirety. The occasional use of tap water might also be behind the "flu" some guests experienced for 1 to 2 days after the Mexican Fiesta buffet on Sunday because I sampled almost all the food being served, and I was fine. (I didn't drink anything though.)

So, would we visit again? Probably not, but then again we have seen the majority of the Mayan ruins in the area, and we don't tend to go back to the same place when we vacation.

Are we sorry we stayed at Fisherman's Village? Not at all. Overall, our stay was very enjoyable and relaxing, and was a welcome break from the Canadian winter.
