“Wonderful Vacation”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

My husband & I enjoyed ourselves from the moment we stepped onto the property to the moment we left. We were greeted with a smile & Margarita! Our room was always clean & the mini fridge was always stocked. I'm a VERY picky eater and never once did I have a problem finding tons to eat. Everything was clean, and all the staff were friendly and always said "Hola" when they passed by. I would highly recommend the steakhouse, it was hands down the best meal we've had in a long time! The Michael Jackson show was terrific, and the Karaoke night was a blast. We had breakfast every morning at the Beach Buffet (sometimes lunch too). We took our own "Cups" as well as straws. The swing bar was our favorite hangout, Alberto was a great bartender (his last day was 2 days before we left). My husband got sunburned really bad & a staff member offered to bring him a homemade remedy to help ease the pain. We met a lot of nice people and hope to go back one day and take our four teenage boys with us!

Room Tip: We were in building 18 which was close to the lobby, as well as the activities pool.

My husband and I stayed here for one week (april 7-14) in the Royal Club. This was the first time we ever paid for an upgrade but thought it would be worthwhile since I am nearly 6 months pregnant and the reviews seemed great.

Here's what I loved about the Royal Club:
- service went above expectations, from the moment we checked in to every meal in the a la carte restaurant
- straws in drinks (we never got straws outside of royal club, not a huge deal but something I found interesting)
- private pool, private restaurant (ala carte) for breakfast, lunch and supper, room service from 7am-10:30pm, private beach front (although we saw others use it and never got kicked out)
- able to book as many a la cartes as you want, they save 12 tables every night at each restaurant for royal club guests and we could book for that night up until 5pm. I don't think these were all ever utilized though so if you're not staying in royal club I would suggest just going to a restaurant and try to get in without a reservation as it seems like there was always room
- multiple beach towels (and no towel cards, not sure if there are towel cards normally)
- beds on the royal club beach are amazing (chairs, not so much)!!
- the beverage service on the beach at the royal club was non-existent on the beds for us but if you were on the chairs or by the pool it was ok
- free Internet in the royal club lobby
- private check-in and concierge
- buckets of beer (not for me of course), but you could get a bucket of bottled beer brought out to the pool and my husband could not get the bottled beer outside of the royal club

Beach
- I really enjoyed the beach and although the chairs are pretty old they were extremely comfortable (way better than the royal club ones!). We never had an issue getting chairs at the beach but the towel game we witnessed at the regular pools and the "good" chairs at the beach was ridiculous! People must have gotten up and saved their chairs by 8am then showed up maybe by 11am or later.
- the beverage service was above what I have come to expect from all-inclusives, constantly checking if we needed anything and I always was able to get yummy non-alcoholic drinks (a couple of times elsewhere I was given rum when I asked for non-alcohol)
- the calm water was nice for floating and I really enjoyed the fish as well. The water gets kicked up by 3pm so visibility wasn't great for snorkeling in the late afternoon but you could still see the fish in the shallow waters

Food
The food at the royal club restaurant was 5* all the way! Sooo good!
Oriental restaurant was so good we went back twice (beware of portions - they're huge), the Mediterranean was kind of like Italian type food (service was good, soup was tasty, main dish blah), and the Mexican had extremely good food as well but the service was atrocious.
- never made it to the main buffet but the beach buffet was just ok, not totally in-edible but ok for a quick snack at the beach. Paco Tacos also looked like a good place to get some Mexican food

Entertainment
Never made it to the main pools but enjoyed the stretching class and water aerobics at the beach. Never felt harassed to join in activities and I liked the music (it didn't feel over bearing or intrusive as some other reviews made it seem)
Watched the Magician and Michael Jackson show at night, was impressed by both.
Lobby bar had live entertainment each night and there was a market on Saturday and Wednesday night at the theatre.
Sports Bar had games playing on alarger tv (hockey and soccer), a pool table and we liked it for playing cards in the evening.

XCaret
The 1 week pass ended the day we got there so we went for the 2 day pass for approx. $109 US. The park was interesting as it had neat animals, a cool aquarium, and unique attractions but there were a lot of extras (not that we were surprised by this but could be very expensive for a family). I really appreciated being able to go back to the resort for food and to change/shower prior to the evening show which is a must see! Bring lots of extra water from the resort as it was super hot! The underground river was totally overrated too, no fish and not sure why you need snorkels. They give you a large bag too at the entrance of the river to put your belongings in, lock it and then you pick it up at the exit. No locker required! Plus it was included in the price. The snorkeling at the beach front was small but decent. They also offer a snorkeling tour on a reef but that was extra money and we decided against it. I'm happy we went but much preferred Xel-Ha as snorkeling is our fav.
Xcaret has a TON of stuff to do and see but other than the Mexican Show (fabulous!) it was ok (nothing spectatcular).

Overall
The royal club is highly recommended. This resort isn't as huge as some have made it out to be - if you have ever stayed at a Bahia Principe this resort may even seem small!
Oh - and don't forget to tip! Not that the service will be any different (which we witnessed at the beach firsthand when I forgot to bring some $) but the staff work their butts off and deserve a few bucks. Over the week we tipped just over $100 which is small considering how much you are expected to tip back home.

Room Tip: Hopefully the hotel is overbooked and you get upgraded to the Royal Club. We paid for it and felt l...

We just returned from 10 days at the Occidental Grand Xcaret. We felt the resort was an excellent value. The employees made the resort as excellent as it was. There were many great employees, but our favorite was Alberto, the bartender at the swing bar near the building 20 pool. He is an EXCELLENT bartender, and this is coming from a restaurant/bar manager with 25+ years experience In the industry. He moved to the Royal Club swimming pool bar the last day of our trip, and if you are lucky enough to enjoy the Royal Club, please stop by and enjoy a cocktail from a great bartender. All the employees were pleasant and very hard working. The only issue was the "building managers" at the entrance of the buildings. They are sharks who are trying to upsell the vacation club. Be smart and make your specialty restaurant reservations when you arrive through guest services. They are right across the lobby when you check in. You will get better choices this way also. Then just say hi to the sharks and say that you have everything arranged through guest services when you walk to your room. Just keep smiling and saying hi whenever you walk into your building. They leave you alone after awhile.
The rooms were plain but very clean and comfortable. We had towel animals almost every day in our room. Very cute.
The food was plain/boring sometimes but we always could find something to eat. We wish the quality was a bit better but the servers were always helpful. The only bad meal we had was in the Los Olives Med restaurant. The pasta were strange flavored, overlooked and a big disappointment. The only bright spot was our friendly server. The food was the only thing I would not give a five star.
The bars always had a choice of top shelf drinks available for the asking. While things to do in the evening were somewhat limited, we always found something to do. Always live music and a show options available at night.
We had a great time for a great price. We could recommend for the great employees and price paid.

We stayed for five nights and had a great time. Every staff member was super friendly and accommodating. Luckily for us, the sales team never even approached us. The grounds are very well kept and beautiful. If you love nature, this is the place for you. You can drink top shelf drinks, you just have to specify. We never once received a weak or watered down drink! If you want any extra in your mini-bar just leave a few dollars behind and they will stock it for you. Food was good, especially for a buffet and it being such a large resort. We never did any of the "reservation required" restaurants because my boyfriend didn't bring pants and they were required..which seems a bit odd to me but we are not ones to dress up on vacation. By the end of the trip the buffets we not as enticing anymore and some more variety would have been nice. The shows at night were entertaining, as was the beach crew who kept the crowd going. Also, beds are a bit on the hard side.

The vendors that were set up around the stage one evening we WAY overpriced and for an $11 cab ride you can go into Playa del Carmen and get the same things for half the price. I would recommend a day/evening trip into Playa to shop and experience more of the authentic feel. It is touristy and people will be asking you to check out their merchandise but on the whole everyone was friendly and respectful.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at this resort and I cannot understand peoples negative remarks. We had a hiccup when we arrived in that the two rooms weren't together but this was rectified within a couple of days and a bottle of wine and fruit given to us. It is a lovely place with all the wild life and greenery. The rooms are quite large - my granddaughter and I had a double bed each - and our beds weren't hard as mentioned by some people. Rooms were cleaned to a good standard every day with a change of towels and bedding if necessary. We were in block 15000 so near to the "quiet" pool and we loved it. Also a short walk to the beach. Yes you do have to reserve sunbeds early in the morning especially if you are a party of 4 but by the time we went to the beach every afternoon there were plenty of beds. I would agree with the comment on plastic glasses these aren't very nice and could understand why some people took their own flask things for drinks in the open air. If you want to drink champagne you only need to ask and ladies the hairdryers are good so no need to take your own and they supply showergel and shampoo. The park next door is a must but you won't do it all in a day. Buy your tickets on line - it's much cheaper and you get second day free! If you can't find something to eat in the buffet that you like you must be very fussy - the breakfasts by far the best tho and the steak restaurant is excellent. We did get caught by the time-share people but once we went to the meeting saw what was on offer and said definitely NO we weren't bothered again. All in all we had a great time but it is a long flight from the UK.

Room Tip: If you want quiet ask for 14000, 15000, 16000

All in all about an 8 out of 10.
Food - was good. A vast choice in the buffet b/l/d and if you can't find anything you like, stay at home. 5 a la carte which you have to book. Which all warranted an 8 except the Mexican which was at best a 6. Plenty of drink and you can ask for premium brands and they don't charge you. Cocktails are a must and there are plenty of choices. Best place for breakfast is the beach restaurant. Didn''t try the snack bars.
Rooms - We did ask to be moved from a room just off the lobby as at times it was very noisy. We would recommend blocks 14,15,16 and 17 which are around the quieter pool and in between beach and the main hotel. We stayed in 14 on the second floor and you are up with all the wild birds. We often saw toucans in the trees. Only went and had a look at the other pool which looked ok but very noisy. Music pounding out and seemed the destination for the younger element.
Beach - was good. Small man-made beach on a lagoon made by breaking through the natural rock barrier. Plenty of fish swimming about. Nice adult only area Peaceful
Grounds - are really special. Spread over a large area and well kept. If you don't like walking you can get the land train which seem to run all the time. Take your time and walk.
Downside - Spring breakers from the US. If they play up and make a noise dial 0 and report them to security. We had to do it twice for the room next to ours and they were placed on a last warning. Didn't hear a peep after that. We are from the uk.

Room Tip: Don't worry about time share, only asked once. Tell them you are from uk and they leave you alo...
