“Occidental Grand Xcaret”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Just returned home on 3/4. This was our eighth all-inclusive vacation, so I just hope the pros outwith the cons. We were pleasantly surprised. This was the best we have experienced. It is an impressive property. 768 rooms, fully booked, but you never felt there were that many people. We also went to Cozumel overnight to the Occidental resort there. They constructed this place around the forest. Every so often the trees would start shaking as we were sitting on our balcony and a spider monkey would pass by. We had an enclosure of deer below our room so I would throw apples I snagged at lunch. These deer were living large!

Room Tip: I don't think asking will help. The rooms cycle thru by availability.

I will try to do the review in sections as I think it will be more informative and helpful.

Check in:
Check in was very smooth. There were no long waits and the desk staff were very helpful and polite.

Rooms:
Our first room was 19215 in Building 19 on the second floor. Lovely rooms, updated and quite large. Had a nice size balcony with chairs for sitting. Was on the back side of the hotel so very quiet. We were close to the large pool with the swimup bar so very convienient. Warning: no tub...only shower. Bed was quite hard so we asked for a foam topper and it was brought promptly, it made the world of difference. Tipped the maid each day and room was cleaned beyond clean! Our airconditioner quit towards the end of the first week...we waited 4 days for them to try and fix it before requesting a move. They moved us to building 18 and we were in room 18101 on the ground floor. Equally a beautiful room. Maid service just as good.

Pools:
We only used the biggest pool with the swim up bar. This pool was closest to both building 18 and 19. It is a large pool and was kept very clean. The swim up bar was good with a waterfall that you swam under and then sheilded you from the rest of the pool while you sat on your stools in the water. Bar service was very good at the swim up bar and poolside. There are 2 other public pools that we did not use but looked equally as nice. Beware..putting out your towels on your loungers early in the morning does not guarentee you your spots. Twice we laid out our towels only to come and find people in our loungers and towels removed. The hotel does not get involved in these disputes. The activities poolside are similar to any other all-inclusive resort we've been too. The kayak races were particularly fun to watch.

Food:
Food was good at the main buffet and the beach snack bar and the poolside snackbar. After two weeks it all becomes repetitive but if you couldn't find something to eat you are far too picky. Food in the main buffet was always a good selection of meats, vegtables and fruits. The breakfast had an omelette made to order and crepe bar. Fruit was always extremely fresh. The alacartes...we attended the mexican Hacienda and walked out...it was that bad. The Oriental and the Sononra steakhouse were very good. My daughter and her hubby went to the seafood alacarte down at the beach and raved it was so good. The food at the snack bars are the typical pizza, burgers, hot dogs, fries, wings, etc. One thing I can say is this place had really good soup!
There were 8 in our party and all of us for a period of about 4.5 days had the "poopers". We don't know why, but think it had to do with the preparation of the food. We were not sick in any other way. The beach snack bar was open for breakfast as well and it was really nice to have your meal looking out over the ocean. Again very clean facilities, but you are in the jungle so expect bugs and birds in the open food areas.
The only negative is that the coffee was horrible. They have a coffee vendor in the main sort of lobby area which charges 30 pesos a cup, and it's good coffee! Other than that you drink the slop in the restaurants.

Bars:
We went to the sports bar and had a couple drinks. Big screen TV, nice pool table. We also went to the disco...loud..packed...the typical. All of the other bars, whether they were poolside or in the lobby or by the theater or the beach were all very good. Great service, premium alcohols!

Entertainment:
The entertainment in the evening consists of a movie that plays each night from 6-8pm. Some of the movies were very good. They had karaoke one night...pretty fun...they also had a Michael Jackson impersonator..Fabulous! The other shows were typical.

Excursions:
We bought the unlimited pass from our Air Transat person on site and paid $119 for unlimited use for the Xcaret park next store to the resort. It was well worth the money and we spent quite a bit of time there exploring and using the facilities. Make sure you try the floating river trip...awsome! We also went to Playa Del Carmen a number of times...cab ride is $11.50 one way. Lots to do there...check out 5th Avenue shopping. Tulum ruins are close by and worth seeing.
The 6 o'clock show at Xcaret Park is fabulous! Please check it out!

Beach:
This hotel does not have a beach! There is a man mades sort of bay that is there with a very tiny beach....snorklers this is not the place for you! The tide does bring in some fish...but it's limited and would strictly be for beginner snorklers. There is a hike to get to the beach and so they have a little tram that runs to and from the beach all day long until midnite. Loungers seem to be easier to get down at the beach.

All in all we would recommend this hotel to our friends and family. We give it 3.5 stars!

Room Tip: Building 18 or 19 are close to everything!

A profile of the author helps before you jump into the author's opinion. This was our 7th trip to the Mayan Riviera. We alternate between high adventure climbing/rafting and fun-in-the-sun family trips, and we always find more good than bad on our Mexican vacations. We are optimists.
That being said, we got our trip from an online auction site, with no expectations about good or bad, other than what we read on tripadvisor. We stayed between Feb 28th and March 4th.
We found the rooms to be clean with all the amenities you need in a room...considering how little time we actually spent there. We visited the Royal Club and quickly concluded that we extra's we would have received from that upgrade weren't worth the extra $...we saw the facilities of both, and chose the standard side of the resort.
The pools were clean, and the ocean/coast was real rocky-great for snorkeling and exploring the oceans. There is a quick drop off near the resort, making the act of getting to the marine life to check out real easy. On a couple of free dives, I would wager that I went down 20 feet and could have gone down further, all within a stone's throw of the beach. Bring your own snorkeling stuff, for the best quality experience. Food was fine-nothing to remember, either bad or good.

Just got back from Mexico after staying at this Resort. Went Feb 25 - March 4th All in all it was a great time.

Check-in:
Arrived around 3PM in the afternoon on a Monday and check-in was extremely smooth and very easy. Staff was excellent and the bellhops were very nice. Only small issue was they said go relax and we will drop all the bags off in the room, so we went and had a beer and a small lunch, and went to the room and the bags were not there. Called the front desk and they had them delivered within 5min. No biggie, little mis communication due to the fact we were suspossed to go with the bellhop then relax. Thats fine.

Food:

Over all the food was great. A fair amount of choices. The Buffet breakfast always had fresh food, omlete station, fresh fruit. French Toast, Pancakes and Sausages were always good. Staff was great and quick. For lunch there are options, buffet lunch or snack bar lunch by the pool. Not as much selection, but enough selection to keep my happy. Burgers, Hotdogs,Fries,Salads,Pork/Chicken.
Buffet Supper we did not eat at that much due to having A'la carts or being off resort. One night was fine no problems, last night I was not overly impressed with the selection. With myself really only being a meat lover and not a veggie guy it kind of worked against me. They did have Fresh lambs,Chicken & Pork however I still was not impressed that night. However, if you did not enjoy the buffet right above it there is a Paco's Tacos/Pizzaria which I was impressed with. They switch out every night from what I was able to tell (One night Tacos one night Pizza). Both I was happy with. Fair warning: The green salsa is very spicy but very good.

A'la Carts:

Oriental: Great Selection, Great Food. The Sweet and sour chicked was fantastic.
Steakhouse: Went twice. Had the New York Strip, tasted great but slighty undercooked. Also had the Chicken Breast which was really good as well. Both I had served with Fries & BBQ Mesiqite sauce.
Mediterrian: Not impressed. I ordered Speggetti with Alfredo sauce I did not like it. Mainly because the sauce had onions in it and a different taste than I was expecting.

Bars/Service

Honestly, There are bars all over the report (10 or 11 in total). They all serve great drinks. Only beer they offer is Corona on tap. Most liquor service is Canadian/American/Cuban (Captain Spiced, Smirnoff, Canadian Club, Crown Royal, JD, Havana Club etc). Had a few Tequila, for shooting the 1800 Brand is what I enjoyed.

Maid Service:

Room was clean everyday, fresh towels, bar fridge stocked with beer, (Modelo) Pop & water daily . No problems.

Pools:

Always found them clean, most times not too hard to find a seat concidering there are lots of pools to choose from. We spend most of the time down by the far ocean pool (right off to the "beach").
This beach is small and man-made. Not the same beach you would expect if you are a experienced caribeen traveller.

Check-Out:

Smooth, Easy. No issues.

Time Share People:
If you are interested in a time-share, by all means. Make sure you barter a good deal with the Sales rep before taking about the time-share for your "freebee". I.E. If you are planning on doing an excursion barter the guy down to a cost about 50% of the real cost. They say it takes 1.5 hours, it is more like 3-4 hours. Hard sales pitch at the end. If you have time to waste just to get a deal, go for it, if not do not bother with them. Easy out: I am not 30 or I do not have a Credit Card.

Excursions/Time off Resort

1) 5th Ave Playa De Carmen: If you want to go shopping, great place to go. Lots of places to shop (most huts have same things in them). Beware: Be Preparred to be hassled and be prepared to barter.

2) Xplor : Amazing place. Best part of the trip. Something like 14 Zip lines (2 differnt tracks, double harnessed in, very safe and a lot of fun) , large underground swimming cave (life jackets manditory - safe), Paddle boat (hand paddles) river, Jeep/4 Wheeler type car driving through the jungles and caves. Really good time. Restaurant on the park which all-inclusive as well during the time at the park.
Note: This is a NO ALCOHOL Excursion. Bealive me, you would not want to be around people with Alcohol on this excursion.

3) Cozmel: The hotel offered us a trip to Cozmel island to stay in their resort on that island. Went on a windy day/overcast so we did not miss any sun. I am not a ferry person, so that was not fun. The hotel itself was not impressive either. The actual was nice, but very small. Food selection was bad. Most of the resort shuts down at 4:30-5:00 (everything from pools/beach). After 5PM you are limited to the lobby selection of the hotel. Was not impressed.

However, Overall, had a great time!

When we first arrived front desk was friendly. They were very helpful the rest of the week whenever we had any questions.

Service was great and the pool was always fun. I was disappointed that there was no real beach and the walk from the room took about 10 mins. But we only went their once and weren't impressed with the amount of beach chairs available so we headed back to the pool for the rest of the week.

The food was good, everything from the buffet to the sit down restaurants. The pool bar was fun and the activities group was always lively and keeping us entertained.

There resort overall was beautiful from the ruins to the walk through wildlife area. Everything was clean and well kept.

The rooms were decent. We found a about 2 bugs in our room from the whole trip which I don't think is too bad considering we are in Mexico and it is tropical climate. Another note the beds weren't that comfortable ..

Overall the resort was nice but

Room Tip: Bring A LOT of bug spray!
