“Fantastic!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

i loved this resort. there are so many things to do. me and my family stayed for a week last year and we loved it! we had a few problems at the start though. the room we were originally put in was awful. we looked out the glass doors and saw a concrete wall. we figured that we would be outside most of the time anyway so it didn't matter much. We were not in this room for long though.
The hotel staff is very nice, but they always come up to you and ask you if you are interested in taking a tour of the property and they will try and talk you into a time share. we ended up getting one. This moved us into the Royal Club which is a lot nicer. We had a huge room with a big balcony that had an amazing ocean view. We had to ask for this upgrade.

The staff that work at the bars and restaurants are fantastic. They're always very helpful and kind. The room service staff were very nice as well. We didn't talk to the maids as much because most of them only spoke spanish. On the second last night we realized that we were missing $500 canadian. The maids had been in the room earlier to clean the room and we assumed it was them that took the money because it was no where to be seen. We never got it back.
The man made beach is fantastic. Make sure you rent snorkelling gear. I think its a $5 deposit. When you being the gear back they give you back your money. The snorkelling at the beach is amazing. There are tons of species of fish. There is a barrier at the mouth of the lagoon to keep unwanted wildlife out. Make sure you keep your eyes open for cool wildlife as well. There are tons of birds (flamingos, parrots...). Also lizards and iguanas are EVERYWHERE. There are parrots all over the place. Even in the hotel lobby.
The food was average... Go to the mexican restaurant. The food is quite good there. Also the Royal Club restaurant is nice and the staff is great there. You can't eat in the Royal Club restaurant if you're not staying in the Royal Club.

Overall, this resort is very good. We would recommend it. Me and my family had an amazing time and we would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Stay in the Royal Club. It's more expensive, but its right on the beach, its closer to everythin...

We needed a quick escape for the family and our 3 year daughter wanted to go to the beach. This resort was perfect for us. They had a wonderful little beach cove for our daughter to play in. it was also next to Xcaret park (2 Minute walk). Daughter was able to get up close to sea turtle release, manta rays, and dolphins. Very relaxing trip and we all had a wonderful time. Only negative experience was related to the vacation property (time share) sales persons. They tended to be very pushy until you attended their sale pitch. After that and a talk with the general manager, we had no issues with sales persons.

We were 6 people from Outaouais, Québec. We all enjoyed our stay and we will definitely go back. We were in the main building and we spent one day at the Park. Just wonderful. The staff, food, grounds at the Grand Occidental... all amazing.

We do recommend that resort.

Room Tip: The main building (10) is a great choice!

The Royal Club at Occidental Grand Xcaret made a great vacation out of a mediocre one. Within this enormous, jungle resort, tucked way back near the sea, are the three buildings with a total of 45 rooms, that make up the Royal Club at Occidental.
In the round, blue building with the Spanish fountain out front, you are greeted by a wonderful concierge(Lourdes), given a drink of chilled champagne and fitted with a gold wristband after being brought up to speed on the facilities and the rules. You are then escorted to your room, which in our case, was a free upgrade to suite 32302. This was on the third floor of building 32 with a garden/jungle view from one patio and a jungle/ocean view from the other. The suite was spectacular, pristeen and very large. The fridge was stocked with beer, water and soda daily. A fruit basket was waiting for us. Our wonderful maid did an amazing job and decorated our bed with flowers each day.
The Royal Club has an excellent, private, indoor/outdoor restaurant that requires no reservations. It also has room service, a two level pool with Antonio serving drinks and food to Royal Club members. There is also a "beach" area off the patio with lounges and Bali Beds that overlook the limestone coast and Caribbean Sea.
There are no limits on using ala carte restaurants and the Royal Club concierge will make reservations for you. There are no towel cards. There are no Vacation Club solicitations there either. The shuttle stops by the fountain and will take you anywhere on the resort. Joel, the driver is a great asset.
We liked the breakfast buffet at the Beach Club or breakfast at the Royal Club restaurant. We usually ate lunch around the pool. Of the regular restaurants, we liked the Italian the best with great service from Silvio, the host. Rigoberto, our waiter in the steakhouse was great, but the food there was hit or miss. We also enjoyed the Seafood restaurant one evening.
As you well know, the resort has a small beach area, manmade or at least enhanced. It is also very large and will take you a day or so to get oriented. There are many exotic animals around the resort which is very cool. We loved watching the monkeys from the sunbeds.
We enjoyed the Royal Club as we generally favor smaller resorts and it provided a "resort-within-a-resort" feel. We wish the beach was different but we knew ahead of time what to expect. While we had computer access in the RC building, we wish there was free wifi in the rooms and a bar outside the restaurant for folks to socialize.
Occidental Xcaret provides a unique niche in the Playa del Carmen area and the Royal Club makes the experience special.

My adult daughter and I just returned from a week's stay, and while the grounds are lovely, the rooms are below par, the food is not great, and you get harassed constantly to buy their vacation club (total scam by sleazy creeps) or tours or spa, etc., etc.

The mini bar is a joke, the service is slow (very under-staffed), and the restaurants were not good. It was also very difficult to get reservations.

The pools and beach were nice but it was not easy to get chairs.

We were not greeted when we arrived and were not given any info - good luck trying to get any! I'm sure we missed out on a lot.

Once you say no to their vacation club (and that took a bit to get through their thick skulls!), it was like we didn't exist. I really hated the constant harassment - I paid a good price for the vacation, and did not appreciate the constant sell, sell, sell.

This resort treats its guests like they are a number - they will not be getting my hard-earned dollars in the future - not at any of their locations!

I loved Playa del Carmen and the area though, and the Mexican people were wonderful - just did not like the hotel - needs a major facelift (getting kind of seedy).

My husband and I stayed in November for 5 nights. Absolutely, a beautiful resort with nice friendly staff. Concierge in every building lobby, they will reserve your speciality restuarants and vacation club presentation if interested. We did not pay for any lavish rooms since all we do is sleep for a few hours. So the room was pretty basic, but very nice, clean and accomadating. There was a mini bar included with water soda and beer. Oh, and a bottle of rum also.

There is lots of activities to do with or without children. There is a disco, but away from the rooms no noise very peaceful. The only down fall is if your use to resorts with really late night life you wont find it here only at the disco.

Quite a few pools and one with a bar. The man made beach is pretty but get there early for the sun beds. Full bar at the beach aswell. Restaurant there also which is great you dont have to walk or take the golf cart back to the main areas.

If you dont like to walk ask for a room close to the lobby it is a big resort. You will see nature all over the resort so if your afraid of the animals thats a heads up. But, your always safe you don't bother them they don't bother you :)

You can find food till like 3am. Thats it though no room serve. Lots, of restuarants to choose from. We loved El Pescador the best delicious seafood. There is a surcharge for the lobster but well worth it.

You can always get a cab and leave the premises if you choose to. Just about a 20 min ride Playa del Carmen is a must beautiful beach and thats were the night life is if interested. You can catch a ferry to cozumel or shop from there also. Very well protected area. We loved it hope you do also remember is more for relaxation here really no life other than quite drinks and the disco.

We were surprised by a different resort theme on our first day. OGX has a man made lagoon style beach. This is overshadowed by an intoxicating eco/jungle theme which even boast some mayan ruins. Lots of pathways carved out of jungle. Plenty of birds, small animals, iguanas everywhere. Very nice. Pools are quite plentiful and pleasant, with something for everyone. Swim up bar behind water fall is nice. I believe in most cases, pools are a very short walk (<100 steps) from your accommodations. Whether at beach or poolside, there is plenty of good service supplying you with any drink you can imagine. Plenty of beach chairs at both beach and poolside.

Xcaret park is literally a 2-3 minute walk along a jungle lined canal. This is a "don't miss" park.

Be prepared to do some walking. Resort is spread out, and spacious. There is a constant shuttle service if you would like to ride versus walk. There were some stairways and unexpected curves that were poorly marked, presenting a few tripping hazards.

We found a real gem in the beach club. Situated on the beach and rugged coast line, it offers ocean breezes, sound of crashing surf. This open air restaurant offers breakfast and lunch buffet, and doubles as the sea food restaurant in the evening. Great ambiance.

Staff is all very friendly. There were a few maintenance people who didn't speak english if you asked something of them, but always, they would find someone who could.

Keep in mind, when dealing with people at this or any resort, "you get what you give". You treat them well, and you'll get it back tenfold.

We enjoyed our stay at the resort as it offered an alternative to beaches, hence the jungle theme.

Room Tip: Our main floor room had a few ants and mosquitos on balcony. (None in room). I would suggest taking...
