“Occidental Grand Xcaret”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

Huge resort in stunning grounds, be prepared for some fairly long walks but there is a little train running every 10 mins or so to get people from place to place. We loved all the wildlife, the jungle walks and the way the grounds are laid out with the large pools meandering through the gardens, just beautiful. The beach is very small and a little overcrowded for us, if you love long beach walks, this resort is not for you. Organised activities go on throughout the day so plenty to do but it can be harder finding some quiet. The buffet restaurant overlooking the sea was our favourite for breakfast and lunch. On the down side, internet is very expensive 80$ US for a week wi fi in your room although if you only need a short session periodically use the business centre which charges 4$US for 15 mins. Food is varied and plentiful, staff helpful and friendly in the main although we had some very long waits for guest services to attend to a faulty safe deposit box and clock. Tipping up front helps enormously here ! They will try (very hard) to get you involved in their time share plan, any request for a better room will lead them to involve you in one of their timeshare sessions. We got it over quickly, carried the free beach bag with us everywhere and weren't bothered again ! Would we go again, yes probably.

We recently stayed here on our honeymoon 6th Jan- 17th jan and we were disappointed. The hotel is not for couples. We were advised there was an adults pool but we found there were children there every day.
The night time entertainment was very poor. Staring with a movie every night, (not what we were expecting to do on our honeymoon) the live entertainment only lasted approximately 40 min - 1 hour each night. Then the lights went down and the bar closed (10.30pm.) there was an option of a disco or a snack bar which was open until 2pm, but the disco was tiny with a DJ who could not speak a word of English and wasn't very confident with his equipment. The disco was empty every night.
The food in the buffet was very poor, some days consisted of mainly fish which I am allergic to. I ate fries, bread and ice cream every day. the restaurants were also poor. We decided to eat out of the hotel for the last few nights.
The room was basic but ok. The towels were changed daily but the floor was never brushed or cleaned, therefore we had to wear shoes the whole time as the floor was dirty. The bedding was not changed throughout our stay.
The all inclusive drinks were good and some bar staff were friendly especially Roman in the Mexican snack bar.
The nature was interesting if that's what you like.
I didn't like that the staff pestered us to go on a tour of the hotel to interest us in buying a time share, which we stated everyday we was not interested in.
Overall we found the hotel to be very boring and needed updating. I would not consider re visiting this hotel.

Back for our third time in four years, which says we like it well enough to keep coming back. The place is huge, so easy to fill your days with enough variety to keep in interesting. The shear size of the property means you will do some walking to enjoy the variety.

Tips for visitors:
-Go see the shows... they aren't FIVE STAR entertainment, but pretty good - - and only an hour. Most are kid friendly, especially the magic show this year.
-Try all the exotic fresh fruits - - despite our third time back, found yet another new favorite fruit (Guanabana).
-The food is pretty standard buffet quality for an all-inclusive resort... the best food is whatever just came out of the kitchen to ensure it's HOT.
-Be specific about drink orders. If you like it made a certain way, you'll need to ask for it that way... but don't expect perfection if there is a long line.
-Don't reserve more beach/pool chairs then you need, you'll get the evil-eye.
-Little tips go a long ways with the service staff.
-Have a rainy day plan - - it's not ALWAYS sunny in paradise, so be prepared - - especially when bringing kids.
-A little Spanish goes a long ways - - especially with the service staff.
-Men, bring long pants for dinner.
-Bring your own floating toys, the resort doesn't carry them anymore.

Tips for the hotel (if reading):
-The key cards are really sensitive when too close to cell phones or other credit cards. Don't know what can be done about this, but really inconvenient to get re-keyed when you need to get into your room.
-The music near the pools is a bit too loud.
-PLEASE allow early check in. Travelers come a long ways to visit and can't wait to take advantage of the amenities. When arriving at noon, it's hard to wait 3 hours for check-in. It's hard to believe there aren't already rooms available at that time.

Room Tip: Overlooking pools are best

Just returned from a 3-night, 4-day stay at Occidental Grand Xcaret. While initially we signed up for a "hotel" room, we were upgraded to a 1-bedroom suite in their First Club in celebration of our anniversary. The staff was very accommodating and the resort, with its many pools and beach-side cove, was very nice. We arrived about 2-3 hours before check-in and were allowed to stow our luggage until our room was ready - about an hour later.

The grounds of the resort are immaculate and its location, only approx 10 minutes via taxi to Playa del Carmen made trips into town fast and inexpensive. The First Club service and upscale libations were an added treat. The buffet and specialty resturant (seafood overlooking the ocean) was also great.

Can't wait to return...

Room Tip: During busier vacation periods, its best to "reserve" your beach chair(s) early, maybe as...

The resort was huge. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. But the whole place needed a facelift. Everything looked old. The buffets actually had good food with different themes every night with a big assortment to choose from. They really tried to make your experience spcecial at the reservatiion restaurants but seemed to get overwhelmed when crowded or asked for something other than the norm.

My fiance and I vistied this resort in January last year (2012), we had a great time and room service and the staff were exceptional! The buffet was outstanding, everyday was a different theme and menu, and was excellent everytime! Both my fiance and I am avid gym-goers, and the fitness center at the resort was top-notch! Compared to other resort gyms, that usually only have treadmills and light weights, this one was fully stocked to accomodate all fitness levels! The beds and pillows were quite hard however, but you got used to it after a couple nights. The shower was awesome, but in our room there was a little gap under the shower door that allows water to run out onto the floor, which created a bit of a flood in our room the first time we used it, but one call to the front desk had this remedied ASAP. The night-life and entertainment was outstanding, with never a dull moment if you wanted to find an activity to attend. There was a little market one one of the nights too, which saved us a trip to Playa as we purchased souvenirs and gifts there. The music is loud by the pools and starts early, but this is a very active resort with lots of kids and groups, so that is expected I think. We did several excursions, that we booked through our Air Canada rep, who is at the resort most days and was most helpful. My fiance and I were married this past January 9, 2013, and when we needed to choose a resort for our honeymoon, it had to be Xcaret! We will be back at the resort on Feb 3, 2013 and can hardly wait!!

Great hotel in very impressive grounds. Excellent choice of food in the buffet and 3 sit down restaurants that need to be booked in advance - the steak restaurant is by far the best. The minibar is restocked daily free of charge too which is great for taking drinks with you on day trips. Very clean hotel with friendly staff that run activities non stop for kids.
Our daughters loved this hotel with its array of animals (deer, monkeys etc) in the grounds and large swimming pool with swim up bar. The main bonus is the beautiul Xcaret park being a short walk or boat trip next door: with the shows, snorkelling, and interactive animal experiences we were there quite a lot.
Top tip, dont book trips with the tour operator, much cheaper to hire a taxi for the day - the driver will wait for you if you want to do short stops or drop you off for the day, this way you get to choose where you go and for how long. Prices you should pay for the taxi are at reception so you know the going rate.
We visited Akumel beach and went swimming with the turtles, Chichen Itza, Coba, shopping in Playa del carmen, a traditional Maya village and beautiful Tulum. I would recommend seeing all of these places! Wish I was still there :)

Room Tip: All the rooms are much the same and theres a buggy that takes you to reception from the beach and ho...
