“Our honeymoon stay”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

We went here in May 2014 for 12 days for our Honeymoon. We were immediately greeted with a welcome cocktail. The check-in only took us 10min and after that we were quickly taken to our room with a golf cart. We had booked a standard room but as part of the honeymoon advantages the hotel offers, we were got upgraded and we also got a romantic diner on the beach for free. This was a really nice touch.

Our room was very spacious and clean with an excellent working air conditioning. The location of our room was great: we were right in the middle so everything was close by. We only had one problem: every time we took a shower the bathroom completely flooded.

We tried all the restaurant several times except for the Italian. This wasn't really to our taste and it was very hot when we visited it. The El Charro offered authentic Mexican food which we really appreciated. At first, we were a bit sceptical to try the Blue moon because it has quite a special menu but in the end we were so glad we did because the food was excellent. I also advise you to try and get a seat at the hibachi grill with chef Nick (he puts on a very entertaining show and it's a nice way of socializing with other guests).

We liked going to the quiet pool but unfortunately this meant that you had to get down at 6:00-6:30 am if you wanted to have a lounger with an umbrella as the hotel was almost completely full. At the other pool, you could still find a spot around 7:30 but it is indeed true that it can sometimes get a bit loud at this pool in the afternoon but it didn't bother us that much.

I would certainly like to mention Miguel at the pool bar. He was so friendly and always remembered our drinks. But I do have to say that every single staff member was extremely friendly. We have never encountered this before.

All in all, for the price you pay this hotel is really worth visiting and even re-visiting!

Took our honeymoon trip here and it was everything we wanted and more. The service was first class from the time we walked in the door until the time we left. Especially loved Ignacio the bartender at the pool bar. This man went out of his way to make our experience pleasant.

I've had the pleasure of working in Mexico in past and I have never seen nor experienced such an amazing hotel like the Ocean Maya Royale in Playa del Carmen.

From the moment we arrived to the time we checked out, we were astonished by the quality of the food & beverage (F&B), accomodations, location and how trully wonderful the entire hotel staff was. From housekeeping to maintenance to the F&B team and to the amazing animation crew governed by Miguel Roman, we were left completely speechless...

I urge all french and or english speaking Canadians and Americans to try the Ocean Maya Royal in Playa del Carmen, you will NOT be disappointed.

Room Tip: All room are perfectly located!

Have just returned from a two week holiday at the OCM as H10 Premium members we have stayed in most of the ocean resorts and H10 hotels, all are great, but would have to say this one is really something special . The main thing that I would attribute that something special to is the staff. As H10 Premium members we get the privilege upgrade i know lots of other reviewers say its not worth it and i can understand why as you still get drinks service on the beach/pool and upscale sunbeds and all rooms are positioned well but the fact you can book a table at the restaurants turn up and walk straight in is great and you get your own section on the beach no worrying about loungers and one of the most meticulous and hard working people I have ever met azusana is a bonus as is the privilege lounge with the gorgeous alisandra who could not of made us feel any more welcome during our stay and was always so helpful and friendly. We used to eat breakfast there as well, looking out onto the beach and served by the lovely albertio who was so unassuming and courteous.
So much has been said about the beach already I have travelled a lot and can assure you as a beach person its fine. Out of 14 days maybe 5 were really weedy the sea IS turquoise and the little pier is lovely to stroll out on .Great walking especially to the right of hotel
Again much said about the grounds they are really fabulous immaculate it makes such a difference the resort is the perfect size. I'm used to staying now in larger resorts but found this so much better. I knew where everything was on first day and the animals are a bonus to see baby deers and coatis was great.Having said that if your not keen request an upstairs room.
As this is a smaller resort you are far more likely to get to meet people as we did, hello to Lorna and Stuart are lovely Scottish friends
The food at OCM is fantastic so much choice we took our teenage sons with us and they also loved it.Mexican was great as was blue moon and Japanese, Italian was probably our least favourite, apart from the wonderful Oscar who is a star he also works the beach in the afternoon and was always full of energy and making us laugh. The buffet is great lots of choice loads of seafood and fresh meat and fish available for cooking to order. Some times felt needed more staff especially on themed nights
Wifi is fantastic and worked everywhere and i mean everywhere even at the end of the pier on the beach!
There is a new manager at the hotel and I think he is defiantly making his presence felt I noticed him several times doing walk rounds etc he even introduced all his head of staff at the pool one day .
My only negatives about this hotel would be that i would like to see the privilege room stay open in the evening but my main reason for saying this is really because of the lack of aircon in the restaurants it was exceptionally hot when we were there but sometimes the restaurants were unbearable i feel that this is something that really needs addressing. mikes coffee is a bit tucked away and would be great to see this open during the day as well.

Take lots of small bills for tips staff really earn them and management they are a credit to you we will defiantly return.

My husband and I stayed 18 days at OMR from July 3-20. This was our second visit to this resort and we cannot wait to go back! Ocean Maya checks off every box on our vacation wish list and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a budget-friendly, adults-only, all-inclusive resort. Over 18 days, we never left the resort, never got sick, met so many great people, and had the time of our lives with zero complaints. For a very lengthy report on our stay with pictures, menus, etc., please read my blog:

The ride from the airport was 28 minutes and rather than your typical “hotel” set-up, Ocean Maya has 320 rooms, including 33 eight room villas as well as 56 rooms in the privilege building. We really love the layout and the grounds are always kept immaculate. The wildlife is very prevalent, especially the coatis. They are not shy and we had one that slept around our balcony. They’re really harmless, but a site to see.

This year we upgraded to the privilege package. With privilege status you receive access to the privilege lounge with top shelf liquor, two hot snacks mid-day, and a-la-carte breakfast. You also have to option to order top-shelf liquor at the bar, access to a separate privilege beach with service, a privilege concierge, breakfast in bed, one romantic dinner, and the ability to make reservations at restaurants. We enjoyed the a-la-carte breakfast the most, followed by the top-shelf liquor at the bar. The breakfast was nice and relaxed with a view of the beach. Regarding liquor, we mostly drank Ketel One vodka, 1800 Anejo tequila, Jim Beam, Crown Royal and Absolut Raspberry from the privilege options. Bacardi and regular Absolut were available without privilege. As part of the privilege package, we also received five mini-bottle of liquor in our room, in addition to domestic beer, diet Pepsi, regular Pepsi, orange Fanta, club soda, juice and peanuts. Our fridge was restocked daily and if we wanted more of something specific (water, Bacardi etc.) we would just leave a note (and a tip!) We opted out of the privilege room simply because we prefer a room with an ocean view over a room with more square footage. None of the privilege rooms are oceanfront.

There are four a-la-carte restaurants and one buffet restaurant on the premises. We found the buffet to be satisfactory, mostly for breakfast and lunch, but preferred the al-la-carte’s for dinner every night.

La Hacienda is the buffet restaurant which is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are so many options with many items changing daily. We skipped (missed?) breakfast a lot or ate in the privilege lounge, but the few times we did choose La Hacienda, we enjoyed toast, eggs, bacon and fruit. The fruit was fantastic every day and the bread and bagels were always fresh. They also had made-to-order omelets as well as traditional breakfast fare. Lunch at La Hacienda offers grilled meats and fish, cold cuts, cheese, salads, etc. There is also a pasta station and sometimes a chef cutting pork for tacos. We enjoying making our own sandwiches, tacos and salads with whatever ingredients were on hand. Once again, the fruit was a must-have!

El Charro is a smaller pool-side buffet at lunch and a Mexican restaurant at dinner. Many people opted for El Charro for lunch due to convenience, but we didn’t particularly enjoy it and enjoyed a snack, smoothie or bigger lunch at La Hacienda instead. We only at dinner here once as it was our least favorite a-la-carte. The food was good, but just a lot of the same…grilled meats, cheese and tortillas. We love the chips, salsa and guacamole and the salad is always fresh.

Yookoso is the Japanese restaurant that is only open for dinner and offers both hibachi and a-la-carte dining. We dined at Yookoso four times during our stay, including three times at the hibachi table with six other people. They served four courses: sushi, tempura, main and dessert, which ended up being too much food! We quickly learned to only ask for one or no appetizer. The hibachi was excellent and we much preferred it over the a-la-carte. It’s a nice show and fun with other couples you know or have met. Along with fried rice, you get shrimp, chicken, beef and vegetables.

La Dolce Vita was hands-down our favorite restaurant, both this year and last year. We tried to keep track of how many times we visited, but it was nearly impossible. We enjoyed it mostly because it offered the best variety. The chicken was great, the steak was pretty good and the lasagna was delicious. We also ordered fettuccini Alfredo with shrimp (even though that wasn’t on the menu), linguini with the aioli pepperoncini sauce and ravioli. We always asked for extra sauce, whether it was Bolognese, arribiatta or carbonara. The service was excellent, particularly from Oscar and Primitivo.

Blue Moon is the newest a-la-carte and we were excited to give it a try. Men are required to wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Women can essentially wear whatever they want, but I think it’s nice to dress up for dinner. We visited on three occasions and it provided the most romantic atmosphere and more suitable for a table of two vs. a table of four. We tried the steak, the bella moon pasta, grouper, duck and seafood coral. The duck was our favorite, but the steak at Blue Moon was our least favorite steak out of all the restaurants. The Mexican coffee is a neat presentation.

There are three different bars on the premises. Corona was the only beer on tap, but there was a plethora of liquor. The lobby bar is where we had our pre-dinner drinks and post-dinner drinks that could take us late into the night. This also where most of the fun happened and where we met a lot of people. Yovonnetti, Oli, Jose, Octavio and Antonio were top-notch in their bar service. They work so hard, while still remaining so kind and eager to please. Eber also worked the bar in the morning and was as nice as we remembered from last year. We loved his cappuccino with Bailey’s.

The pool bar was located in between the loud pool and the quiet pool, but also had a swim-up bar on the party pool side. At the start we would simply walk to get our own drinks, but Ana Iris was so efficient with her pool service, we decided to order from her instead. This simply meant we didn’t have to get out of the pool! The bar outside of El Charro also doubles as a smoothie bar during the day. Many people don’t know about it, but we sure did! If we missed breakfast or didn’t feel like going to lunch, we would just get a smoothie (or two). They’re blended with fresh fruits and vegetables and made-to-order as you wait.

Mike’s Coffee Shop opens at 4 pm every day and served delicious coffee drinks as well as a limited number of pastries and sandwiches. If you want coffee prior to 4 pm, you can simply visit the lobby bar and they have an espresso and cappuccino machine ready.

There are two pools at Ocean Maya. Most people refer to them as the quiet (or big) and loud (or party or swim-up bar) pools. There were often games going on with the entertainment staff. The quiet pool remained pretty quiet. I brought a float with me and I was happy I did and was not alone. We had 18 days of perfect weather and the heat was so intense that the pool was just perfect. Yes, the party pool can get very very loud, but we were rarely affected by the noise while in the quiet pool. Our room overlooked the party pool, so we could hear it mostly when we went in for our afternoon siesta. People are on vacation and having fun. It can be a little annoying when people from the party pool bring their party to the quiet pool, but it only happened once during our entire stay, so it surely didn’t warrant a complaint.

There are two small beaches with plenty of chairs as well as a boardwalk with several more cabanas and chairs. Overall, during July, it’s just too hot for us to stay outside of the water, so we stayed at the pool. We’re pool people, so the beach at OMR would never deter me from staying there.

Romantic Dinner
Included with the privilege package is a romantic dinner, which includes dinner poolside with a three-course shrimp dinner. You can also purchase the dinner for $50 USD per person. Upgrades available are $20 USD for filet and $40 USD for lobster (per person). If you upgrade, your dinner will be located on the beach instead (if available). For our dinner, we did not upgrade, but our friends upgraded to the filet and the lobster. We had our dinner poolside and they had theirs on the beach, both at 7:00 pm. The pros and cons of both are that at 7:00 on the beach, you have better lighting for pictures…at 7:00 by the pool, you still have people in the pool, so the romance isn’t quite there. On the Friday before we were to leave, we won another romantic dinner in the poolside raffle. We made our reservation for Saturday night at 9:00 pm on the beach and upgraded my entrée to the filet. While we didn’t have the best lighting, it was very romantic. Had we opted for the poolside dinner, there would have been the Mayan show going on nearby. Overall, we enjoyed the standard shrimp dinner, but we all recommend the filet upgrade and if love lobster, then the lobster upgrade as well.

Let me finish with the highlight of this resort: Staff. From top to bottom, everyone treats you with genuine reverence and kindness and always eager to please. This year was only our second visit yet the staff remembered us from our previous stay. Groundskeepers, housekeeping, bar staff, dining staff…I could go on forever about their seemingly genuine attempt to make every guest happy. Yovannetti might be the most adorable person on the planet. She and Tila are the servers in the lobby bar and work with diligence and speed, while still taking the time to take pictures and dance. They truly make nights at the lobby bar more enjoyable. Also at the lobby bar were Oli, Jose, Octavio and Antonio. They were bartenders who were efficient, conversational and good people. They were always thinking ahead and making drinks as quickly as possible to attempt to satisfy every guest, regardless of tipping. Ana Iris was a pool server at the quiet pool. We distinctly remembered her from the buffet last year and vice versa. She took care of all of our drinks in the blazing heat while we socialized in the pool. She was so nice and patient with us and other guests. Primitivo was our server at least three times at La Dolce Vita as well as our romantic dinner on the beach. He always had a smile on his face along with being professional and accommodating. Finally, Maria Lopez is an enormous asset to the company. We’re not alone in this thinking as she always went out of her way to accommodate all requests. We exchanged several emails prior to our stay and she never seemed bothered. When we arrived, she met us to ensure all was well. Throughout the trip, she stopped and talked to us whenever she saw us around the resort. I have no doubt that she was responsible for the cake and champagne for my birthday and the rose display for our anniversary. She even put our friends in the room next to us! Overall, the staff at Ocean Maya Royale is phenomenal and should be proud of what they bring to the H-10 organization.

Based on our experiences, we recommend bringing lots of bug spray. I was bitten up a fair amount this year, despite wearing tons of bug spray and bug repellent bracelets around my ankle. We met many other visitors who didn't have any bites, so it varies by the individual. The mosquitoes, sand fleas, whatever they are...they all find me, so I took three cans of spray with me. It seems to cross a broad spectrum. So, if you're susceptible to bites, bring lots of spray! I also brought my own pillow, but made sure to put a different pillow case on it. I laughed whenever we entered the room and our nicely made bed had my green pillow on it. Once again, this is a personal preference. I need a good pillow to sleep well and I'm glad I brought it! Don’t hesitate to bring extra sunscreen! It's worth the weight in your bag and not worth the cost you'll have to pay in the gift shop. We always bring extra simply because we have to use a specific oil-free sunscreen due to allergies, but I would recommend it to anyone. Whenever we travel anywhere (not just Mexico, not just this resort), we bring Imodium. The reality is, you’re on vacation, you’re living it up and your body may not respond well. One of the worst things that can happen on vacation is getting sick and Imodium can fix you right up! Finally, bring a lot of $1’s and $5’s for tips. I’d say most people don’t tip, but we tip simply because the service far exceeds our standards and each and every one of them is earned and well-deserved.

Room Tip: Upper level oceanview rooms are the best! Privilege rooms are not close to the pool/beach.

We stayed here at the end of May. We upgraded to privilege which I think, is a rip off unless you have to drink "premium" liquor. The privilege rooms are at the back of the resort, farthest from the beach and pool. You would think that the more you pay, the better the view, but not the case here. Also, the privilege beach wasn't that great, the beach water is brown and its easier to just lay by the pool so you can get in the pool whenever you want. We ordered a room service breakfast and the toasted breads were soggy and the beverages were lukewarm.

Another downfall was the pool closing times. The pool closed at 8pm every night?? The swim up bar closed at 5pm and the other pool bar closed at 6pm. I thought that was ridiculous! In the brochures the pool said it was open until 11 pm.

The nightly entertainment was kinda cheesy, but since it was free it was fine.

The food was good. We loved the hibachi style steak house and the sit the 10 of us at the same time. The chef was very entertaining. Every restaurant had great food, I couldn't get enough guacamole.

The resort was very clean and the workers were very pleasant when you walked by them. The servers and bartenders were all hard workers and served us with a smile.

Not sure I would go back to this resort because I want to be able to swim in the ocean.

I would definitely recommend walking down the beach and snorkeling at the channel.

Room Tip: The privilege rooms are at the back of the resort with NO beach or pool view.. longest walk in the w...
