“Ocean by H10”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

We have just had an 11 night holiday at the Ocean Maya Royale an adult only hotel in Playa del Carmen. We had a good holiday in a lovely hotel. Our room was spacious and very clean with a small terrace, and a nice bathroom. We had problems getting hot water each time we used the shower but if you waited long enough it always came through. The room was cleaned daily. The hotel and grounds were immaculate being maintained what seemed liked 24/7.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, a great animation team who weren't intrusive at all. There are two large pools one quiet the other at times very noisy but you had a choice plus there is the beach which again was continually being cleaned. There was the usual problem with sun beds/parasols being available and having to get up at 6am to reserve them (or even earlier) quite ridiculous. We heard that some were being reserved as early as 4am!!!!!!! The parasols by the pool are in short supply and too small, plus being fixed to the ground you can't move them when the sun moves which could do with being changed. If two people are sharing a parasol often only one can sit in the shade because as the sun moves you need to move the shade as there isn't room to move the chairs.
The food was good but lacked a bit of wow factor, plenty of choice, and what we had was good. The a la carte restaurants were really disappointing, the Japanese restaurant was awful the only good memory from there was our waiter who was so funny, the Mexican was disappointing the worst Mexican food we have ever had, the Italian again disappointing. We couldn't understand why people were being turned away when there was several empty tables, it did make sense. The Blue Moon was OK but had no atmosphere and the food was pretty average. The drinks/bar service was good but the cocktails were inconsistent in taste, I noticed that sometimes 3 ingredients were added and other times 4 ingredients to the same drink. I was quite alarmed to see the barman take a bottle of clear "spirit" and pour it on the bar and then wipe with a cloth to clean the bar surface at the end of the day, if it's cheap enough to use as a cleaning liquid I'm not sure I want to be drinking it.
The hotel is isolated and a taxi is required to go into to Playa de Carmen.
Evening entertainment was average with lots of miming by the entertainers which was not to our taste, good dancing and costumes but too much miming. Some good singers during the early part of the evening but they were only on stage for a short while before the "shows".
Overall a great hotel if you want to chill out and not go exploring or are happy to be in a hotel for the duration or pay for taxis to escape to some nightlife or shops and bars etc.

i was at the ocean maya in december 2013 and have decided to write an honest review of this lovely place.
i traveled with thompson and it was well manged from start to finish although we didn't fly back on the dreamliner, wasn't a big issue though we got home in one piece. flying out on the dreamliner was lovely, comfy seats great leg room.
once we got to the hotel we were greeted with a lovely ice cold beverage and checked in very quickly then shown to our rooms.

our room was nice with a lovely big bed,the pillows were a bit on the small side and lumpy but im sure if i asked for different ones i would of got them. we had a small fridge which was stocked daily. the bathroom was nice clean and everything worked as it should. on the last day we had a power cut so no hot water for a while but its not the hotels fault as some people moaned about.
the grounds are superb the staff work all day to keep them in top condition. loads of wildlife everywhere.

the food was great and plenty of it,the main buffet at lunch and dinner was lovely with fresh fish fresh meat and so much to choose from. im fussy with my food and i didn't complain about anything. the ice cream is lovely. breakfast was great loads of different kind of egg based foods, bacon, sausage, breads, pancakes, the list goes on and on. we tried the japanese restaurant and this was nice nothing special but was a change from the buffet, also the mexican wasn't all that great. i liked eating at the buffet as there was so much choice.

drinks were great and easy to get,tip the staff and they always remember what you like to drink and start pouring it as walk towards the bar.

the beach is nice and a little 10 minute walk to the left of the beach is a lovely lagoon, there's usually security on a little bridge over the lagoon and he stops you from going over. just be nice to him and he lets you over.

we went on a few trips which were brilliant, coba maya, coco bongo's and the captain hook ship.
you can easily grab a taxi from the hotel to playa del carmen its very cheap about £10 and once in playa there's loads of lovely places to eat drink and shop.

one negative and im not alone on this! loud rude americans get very drunk then get even louder, they cant have a conversation without shouting at each other. they want everyone to know what they are talking about. we met some lovely couple's from usa canada and the uk and they all said the same thing. one couple from canada were very embarrassed by the behaviour of the americans. i would of gave this hotel a 5 if it wasn't for this,i felt the staff could of told some of the guests to lower the tone a little and be respectful of the other guests.

on a whole a great holiday a lovely hotel nice food and great staff and well worth a visit.

I read all the reviews online before heading to the Ocean Maya with my husband and some friends for a week. I read all the "bad things" and I'm writing to say that some people just aren't happy...EVER. We had a wonderful time. We had trouble with the bed in our first room (very hard), but we were taken care of VERY WELL by Allisandra (Ali) at the guest services desk and moved to a different room. With all of the people she was "taking care of" she provided us with top-notch service and always with a beautiful smile. She would make a point of saying "hola" and asking us how we were whenever she saw us thru out the week. When you are away from home and in a new place, it means the world to have someone there who TRULY cares about you. The food was good, (we liked the Italian restaurant the best) the grounds of the resort is BEAUTIFUL and there are always people working to make it look that way! Everyone is friendly and cheerful, which for me, makes it a nice place to spend a vacation! Thank you to everyone at Ocean Maya, but especially to our friend Ali, for making it feel like home.

Two couples went and this was first time to Mexico. We had a great time. Food was great. Favourite a la carte was Blue Moon. We ate there twice. Ate at the Italian and Mexican as well. Also enjoyed the Japanese and Nick the chef was very entertaining. He really knows how to make your experience enjoyable Everyone was friendly and always saying "ola" to you as you walked by. Entertainment group a hard working group and very friendly and helpful. Grounds beautiful and gardeners always working on them. Fridays is bar b cue by pool where Managers and staff are introduced to guests Very nice touch. The woman who made omelettes in the morning was so friendly and accommodating. Really all the staff are great. Room very nice and balcony enjoyed in late afternoon. We were closer to pool which was nice and forced us to get some exercise walking to main area for buffet and entertainment. Beach is small but I must admit I don't mind swimming in a pool. Coffee bar in the evening made a great cup of coffee especially when we gave her coffee liqueur from the bar to add to it. The lady in the jewellery store was a gem and put up with me checking things out numerous times. Finally bought a ring I love Went into Playa del Carmen one afternoon. Really need to take 2 afternoons or evenings to really enjoy and take advantage of the bars and restaurants. 5th avenue is verrrry long. Will be back but would love to stay 10 or 14 days this time. Money well spent.

Room Tip: We enjoyed 2 nd floor but our friends enjoyed their ground floor room. Closer to pool makes it easie...

We just returned from staying at this resort and have absolutely nothing bad to say about it.The grounds are very well kept and the beach is so relaxing. The pool where the bar is was a bit loud because people seem to have to much to drink there. But thats why we take vacations is to relax and have fun.The rooms were very modern and the beds were actually comfortable. The food at this resort was very good. The buffet was probably the best we have had.The staff is extremely friendly and accomadating. If staying here, consider taking in Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen. This bar keeps you on your toes from start to finish.Their shows are amazing and the energy in that place is non stop.Goes until 4 a.m.so come prepared. This is an adult resort so no kids was a nice change. We absolutely would return to this resort again.

I am at a total loss for words...no great words even come close to our stay at the Ocean Maya Royal. It started even before we arrived, when i sent an email to Maria Lopez and asked for a special request for another couple who were travelling with us, that were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. She got back to me, and assured they would have something special for their room, and they did not dissapoint! Balloons, rose petals, chocolates and champagne! It was beautiful!! Thankyou Maria! :)
Now the resort...if we could give it a 12 out of 10 we would! EVERYTHING! from the checkin, the room, the food, the immaculate grounds, and the AMAZING and caring staff...we dont have ANY and im not exaggerating! NO COMPLAINTS! we felt so at home, and treated like royalty every day! The staff work so hard....each and every one of them. There are a few that stick out for us, Giovani and Annie with their entertaining, in the pool area and the night shows! There are so many others, but names have slipped us..please forgive! We definitely recommend this resort to ANYONE! this hotel is by far the best one we have been to and will being returning for sure!! You will not be dissapointed with this place. Thankyou each and everyone for making our vacation one we will NEVER forget!
