“great stay after shaky start”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

have just returned from OMR after a two week stay, we did not get off to a very good start at check in when the young man seemed to have a problem finding our booking?? was a bit worrying when asked for our letter of confirmation, when that was sorted we found our friends had been given rooms the other side of the resort to us, now when you have one booking for two rooms you would think that they would be allocated together, however i had not relied on this and had e mailed the hotel twice before our holiday requesting upper rooms together as one of our friends was a bit concerned about the wildlife, (which we loved) however when i told reception this i was told that they could move me the next day to a room closer to our friends which we did but it was a bit annoying not being able to unpack and settle on our first day, my only gripe with the hotel is it would be great if geust e mails could be taken notice of especially when they are sent twice. (when i got home i did find an answer to me from maria lopez which i did appreciate). once we settled and started our holiday i have to say we had an absolutely brilliant holiday, the ground of this resort are beautiful and a pleasure to stroll around, the rooms are a good size with everything you need, the public areas are lovely and kept spotlessly clean, the pools are great size and again always really clean and tidy, but the best thing about this hotel has to be the very hardworking staff who are always friendly and pleasant, even when i'm sure that at times they must be tired, they are a credit to the hotel and to the management, would we return? yes, in a flash.

Our 8th time in Playa, 1st time to this resort and trust me we plan on coming here many more times. Grounds are maintained beautifully and every single person on staff here is genuinely cheerful, charming and delightful.
I loved the size of this resort, the layout is easy to navigate. The beach is kept nice, but the ocean here is somewhat dirty. If you turn to the left (looking at the ocean) and walk down about 15 minutes you will reach a lagoon where a cenote meets the sea. The water is crystal clear and beautiful, positively well worth the stroll.
Around the pool area and beach there are plenty of loungers to be found. At the lobby bar have a chocolate martini, they r amazing!
We found the buffet to be on the better quality side. The Japanese restaurant was fantastic and although it is tucked back in a corner the coffee shop is a treasure to find and experience.
The rooms we found to be comfortable and clean. Honestly we slept like rocks - we found the beds to be comfortable. The mini fridge seemed to have a difficult time getting and staying cold tho. The only can beer on the resort to b found we were not fond of, and we don't care for Corona. Sol, Superior or Dos Equis would have been wonderful to have available (are you paying attention bar management?)
Sky and Stoli vodkas are available as premium only, but Absolute is available for the rest of us peons, lol. Free wi-fi is available in the lobby/lounge area!
If you go into town to shop 5th avenue, we suggest a taxi. The walk down just to catch a collectivo is looooong and stifling.
All in all, this resort has a lovely relaxation vibe. We hope to return many, many more times!
Any questions let me know....

Room Tip: We were very happy in the 7th block.

We booked Ocean Maya for a 4 day short trip with one other couple Feb 15-18 (40th b-day fun) mostly because it was the right size, adults only, good reviews, fair price.
Because it was a short stay we arranged an early flight to get in and enjoy our first day to the fullest. When we got to the hotel they said they were OVER BOOKED and didn't have a room for us (like an airline would or something). We booked our stay with them over 4 months ago. They told us we would have to stay our first night at the hotel next door (Blue Bay--not adults only). The only thing they wanted to give us in return was "privileged" status...no big deal, better alcohol. They had no manager on site so we had to talk to a supervisor at the front (Sergio I think) and went round and round with him about how much this is crap etc. They ended up giving us the first night free and another small discount, but it took a lot of work to get that. We wouldn't have minded so much if we were there for a longer trip, but having to move hotels and rooms twice for a short trip really messed up our start. On top of that, we met people at the pool the second day that arrived the same day as us but 3 hours later, and they were all good. I called and confirmed our reservation two days before we flew in and all was good. Not sure how this happend to us...really don't. What made it even worse was they seemed not to really have any sympathy for what they were putting us through. That next morning we checked out of the other place and came over early figuring they would hustle to get us a room, nope--we finally got one between 1:30 and 2:00. Sooooo annoying.
As far as the place goes: It is everything we expected from reviews, pretty, nice staff (except for check in people), beach was ok but not awesome. The food was up to par for an all inclusive. Would have liked to see a little variation day to day for breakfast. Bar staff at the lobby were fun, bar staff at the pool were void of emotion, but worked. Poolside fun staff was good. Not sure why the music changed songs every 15 seconds all day...it was like never ending name that tune. Met some fun people from South Dakota, Iowa, etc...Go Ohio!!
Beds were kind of crappy, but rest of the room was fine except that I had to take a cold shower one evening, get that hot water whenever you can.
All in all, if you can confirm you won't get screwed like we did and want a nice resort that isn't a giant expansive, walk far for everything kind of place this is pretty good. If we didn't go through check in hell I would say I would return.

Room Tip: Just make sure you get one!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for posting a review on Tripadvisor. We are really sorry for all the inconveniences we put you and your friends through, We do understand that coming only for 4 nights, it was a big disapointment. I would also like to apologyze if we fail to show sympathy for the situation, but I can guarantee you that we were very concerned about the confusion and we tried to do our best to fix the situation. Thank you for the complements made to the staff and we are very happy to read that overall you did have a good vacation.

We have stayed at several different all-inclusive resorts in the area five times now over the past three years. And in our opinion this adult-only resort is one of the best! Why? Beautiful surroundings ideal for relaxation. Great, smiling service from the Ocean Maya staff. And little extras that made our stay special!

Traveling with two other couples for a Valentine's break, we felt we were taking something of a chance with the Ocean Maya (OM), as it is smaller than many other all-inclusive resorts and, according to the H10 staff, just became adults-only fairly recently. Whatever concerns we might have had were dispelled during our six-day stay.

The resort is on the beach about 40 minutes south from the airport, and about 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen.

The first noteworthy thing about the OM is its layout and architecture. Unlike other resorts -- especially the larger ones -- the OM has about 40 'bungalow' style units. Each unit has just two floors with four (or maybe six) rooms on each floor. This means that you have more privacy and a quiet, relaxing environment. Our room, on the second floor in unit 36, offered a small balcony with a sliver of views of the pool and of beach as well as the gardens surrounding the units. The room itself was fairly well-appointed, though smaller than more upscale luxury resorts we've stayed at. There is a good-size walk-in shower and a single-sink vanity separated from the shower and toilet with a frosted-glass modesty door. A note here about house-keeping: We typically leave a nice tip for the cleaning staff, and are rewarded with excellent cleaning service. This time it was not quite up to the same standards, as, while the room was cleaned well, we had to call the desk for additional soaps and other items on a few occasions. The bed itself, a king-size, was pretty firm, so we ordered up a pillow-top for it which was put in before our third night. From then on we slept very well. I would say however, that the H10 owners of the OM would do well to upgrade the bedding here as H10 has to the Ocean Blue further north.

The grounds, as others have pointed out, are really beautifully-maintained and a pleasure to walk through. In fact, there is a three KM 'jungle walk' around the OM that will get you 'up close and personal' with the wildlife that abounds here.

The resort offers many of the activities and amenities that you would find at larger resorts, with what seemed to us a little more personal attention from the energetic and friendly staff. We had a 'couples massage' on the beach that was very enjoyable, and followed that up with a brief period in the big hot tub in the spa (above the main floor lobby). The restaurants include a buffett for breakfast, lunch and dinner; and dinner restaurants that offer Mexican, Japanese, and Italian. As a Privilege member, we could make reservations, but these even without them, it seemed that the wait-time was fairly short. We tried all of the restaurants and enjoyed every item of food we tried. We were especially impressed by the artistry of the food presentation we experienced -- there are some five-star restaurants that don't do it this well -- and it complemented the tasty food. We also tried the 'romantic dinner' option -- for the six of us ;-) and really enjoyed our pool-side repast.

As we were there for relaxation on the beach, we enjoyed the Privelege section of the beach. Very comfortable lounge chairs and beach beds are set up behind a board walk and splash-guard windows. This is probably due to beach erosion in the past. Service here was excellent, and our server, Azucena, did a terrific job of providing a near-constant supply of 1800 margarita's and water. Further enhancing the beach experience, you can walk for hours either north or south along the beach. Surprisingly, we found less seaweed here than on the beaches just 10 miles north at other resorts.

I'd be remiss if I didn't say something about some of the activities and other things at the OM that made it special. Sure, there were the tables set up by local vendors just about every evening. Yes, they had a good mix of lively performances in the relatively small theater. Evenings also brought rock bands or DJ's who were able to play music suitable for all age groups to dance to or just listen to. However, what really made it special for us was a gentleman by the name of Juan Talin C., saxaphone player extrodinaire! Every evening he played near the lobby -- and in the buffet every morning. Music familiar to just about anyone. Music you could slow dance to. Ahhh, bliss. More resorts should have someone like Juan!

Needless to say, we all had a great time. We really look forward to returning again!

I just returned from this hotel and cant say enough about the service. I was escorting a radio come-along group from Minnesota. Needless to say everyone was anxious to get out of the snow and cold so was very anxious for a great winter getaway and the Ocean Maya Royale did not disappoint. They took great care of the group from providing a special private group check-in complete with a welcome drink, and bottles of water. We had a group event on Sat night and again they went above an beyond to make it special. We just needed the room for a couple of hours to play some games and giveaway prizes. They had the tables and chairs decorated beautifully, brought in snacks, water and soda and then had a waitress come thru with specialty cocktails! We had a honeymoon couple with us and they were treated very nicely with a private candlelight dinner, breakfast in bed, spa discount and more. The hotel grounds were beautiful, and the public rooms and guest rooms were very nice and very clean! the pool area was fantastic with a quiet pool and activity pool with a swim-up bar. Lots of beach chairs available. Wonderful beach beds and the nicest beach along that strip of resorts. They had good evening entertainment and activities, nice saxaphone music in the early evening in the courtyard. One of the highlights was how friendly the entire staff was. And they had a variety of specialty restaurants that didnt require reservations or were limited to one visit. The buffet was also good.and the specilaty coffee shp was a highlight. Spa was beautiful and the massage I had was wonderful. I highly recommend this hotel and plan to bring my group back there next year.

Overall I loved the resort, it was very clean, Our pool side waitress Ivonne made us feel very special, learned all are names and made sure we were taken care of on drinks, even one day it was not her area but still served us. Other staff were just ok and not very friendly, one of the activities guy snapped at me when I ask if the towel lady was out yet. Most of the guys at the pool at first did not say much but at the end of the stay would say Hi. We were traveling with two other men, so four men total. Gay men at that. Just kind of felt like the staff other than Ivonne did not have time for us, it cost a lot of money to stay and just think they could of been friendlier. And not enough bartenders to take care of the guest.

This adults only, all inclusive resort is a beautiful resort with awesome beaches. The people were very friendly and helpful. The resort buildings are all concrete and very sound proof. I forgot to lock my safe one day, and all of our belongings were still inside. I would strongly recommend this place. There are always lots of planned activities every day. A very nice pool bar. The food is 10 times better than any cruise. This resort has very high standards. Always cleaning the sidewalk, grooming the grass and bushes. This is the best place I have ever stayed at.!!!!!!!!!! The drinks were great too. We never had to wait long for a resturant, even though the resort was full. The only negative comment would be that there was a sewer smell in one area along the sidewalk. We are for sure coming back!!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor, with a king bed. Very quiet up there.
