This property is simply beautiful and feels like a boutique hotel rather than an all inclusive resort. The service is outstanding. The rooms are very spacious and luxurious. This resort is for people who want to relax and be catered to with no stress,(no buffet, no games, and no "activity" crew) just what we are looking for! We are returning for our fifth visit in February and cant wait.

Room Tip: If you can spend the extra for a room on the beach, I highly recommend the Beahfront Casita But if...

We just returned from Blue Diamond after a second trip and this will probably be our final. The hotel is nice, but it's not great. The pros:
-great room (both times we stayed in the rooms near to the ocean)
-wonderful staff - although as mentioned by earlier reviewers the staff isn't trained for a 5-star resort, everyone is gracious, hardworking, and a pleasure. Should the resort train their people differently, yes, but everyone from the cleaning staff to the servers were very helpful.
-nice beach and pool - there are two pools which are both very nice and the beach is great in front of the hotel. Unfortunately, much of the beach to either side of the hotel is eroded so the beach is only enjoyable just in front of the property.
-not crowded and not loud - if you're looking to relax and are ok without entertainment/activities, this is the place to be.

The cons:
-the food is mediocre at best. There is little variability and more emphasis on how the food looks rather than tastes. During both our stays, we ended up with stomach problems. We chalked the first time to bad luck and stayed again because we liked the place, but twice is too much of a coincidence.
-the room has a tv that is basic channels. There are no movies at the hotel and no ability to rent movies.
-it's expensive for what you get. Again, it's a nice place, but it's very bare bones. That would be ok if the price wasn't including an "all inclusive" which was very lacking.

Blue Diamond is a nice place to stay for a couple or several days. But in terms of an all-inclusive, it's not a great option. When you're paying for a resort, room, service, and food/drinks and are only getting a good resort and room, the price should be more aligned.

The hotel is in need of repair. The service is as three-star hotel. We hadn't hot water in the room during 3 days! The staff is incompetent. The work of concierge is unqualified, he promises but nothing makes. Because of him we were just a littel to late for our plan. The price for such hotel is too high. This hotel is big disappoinment for us and waste of money.

Room Tip: We never come this hotel.

The room is very big and decorated nicely but it is a case of style over substance. For example the bathroom is huge but has no bath, there are two rainwater showers but one of them is so fierce it is painful. There are tea bags but no kettle and the wifi only works in the bathroom.

The food is very nice but became a little repetitive. It would have been much better to have Aguamarina as a buffet for breakfast (and possibly dinner too - with starters and deserts on a buffet and main courses served).

The rooms are far from the restaurants but you can walk it in 10 minutes and there are carts if it is raining.

Tipping. My major issue with this place. We paid a LOT of money to stay here and none of that is passed onto the staff. The waiters are working for tips as their wage is very, very low. They have to split their tips with the maitre 'd and the barman. Once we discovered this we started tipping and our service improved dramatically. I am not saying we don't tip - we do, but we prefer to tip at the end of the stay. If we have paid for an all inclusive holiday we don't want to have to carry money with us everywhere.

I believe some of the other resorts ban tipping and pay their staff properly. I would prefer that.

This property is beautiful. Its very peacful, tranquil, and great place for couples. The rooms are large and have great features. The pool area is very nice and the beach views are amazing. The food was very good and the staff was very friendly.

The service here is very slow in all faucets. The service at the aquamarina restaurant is very slow. We also asked for help multiple times to get help with a broken umbrella on the beach. We also had to make multiple calls to have a golf cart pick us up for dinner when it was pouring rain. We made multiple calls and they promised someone would be there soon, but no one ever showed so we had to walk in the rain to dinner.

Room Tip: Choose the Palifitos suites on the lagoon. close access to beach and amenities.

We have just returned from a week staying at this hotel, over New Year's Eve.

The good points:

The hotel itself, the rooms and the facilities are very high quality. The suites are large, the bathrooms are stunning and both the pool and spa is excellent. The beach is lovely, with a pier and is very pleasant to swim from. The staff are extremely friendly and want to help. The spa is also excellent, although expensive, I had a great massage there.

That summarises the best parts of our stay here - in itself, the shell of the hotel gives it the potential to be excellent, but unfortunately it falls short of the true luxury hotel that it touts (and costs) itself as, for a number of reasons.

Foremost of these are the service, which is really poor, and you can't charge 5* prices when you deliver 3* service. Meals can take anything from an hour to two and a half, depending on how long you find yourselves waiting for menus, drinks and food to arrive. Whilst the staff are extremely friendly and well intentioned, they aren't trained in top service - on the first day we were left waiting an hour for a table, having to ask numerous times to be seated.

The hotel is laid out across several kilometres with reception and the beach / restaurants at opposite ends. This wouldn't be a problem, but the only rooms that come with bikes are those nearest to everything. Go figure! The improvement that could be made for each room to have bikes would be immeasurable (and should be relatively cheap to implement), the golf carts they put on for transport are fine, but sporadic waiting times of up to ten / fifteen minutes can really start to grate, especially when holiday time is so precious! Similar problems included, waiting an hour for ice to enjoy a drink from our mini bar on New Year's Eve, having to ask for things 2 / 3 times before it actually happening, inconsistent room service and restocking of mini bar, often no beach towels to be found anywhere, a long wait for a sun bed to be brought down to the beach, golf carts not turning up when ordered, a taxi that never turned up on NYE and infrequent waiter service around the beach / pool areas.

Tipping is endemic at the hotel and clearly determines the quality of service you will receive (particularly in Ambar). I understand why this happens, but when you've spent as much as you can afford on the holiday itself, to then find yourself shelling out a lot more during your stay is frustrating. Service quality should be excellent, given the cost of this hotel, regardless of whether or not you are tipping. One thing the hotel should absolutely put a stop to, is guests paying the beach staff to set up and reserve sunbeds from early in the mornings. One day, a group of 8 beds were set up, empty and "reserved" whilst other guests arriving at the beach were left with nowhere to sit. Another day we got shouted at by an irate American couple who had paid the beach staff only to find us sat on their loungers, following a rain storm when all the towels had been cleared away and we had no idea they were "reserved." We were left feeling quite uncomfortable after this experience. More sunbeds on the beach would probably help as well!

The food is pretty average, and not of the standard you would expect at this type of resort - breakfast is by far the best meal. The menus seem ill thought out, and Ambar (the supposed fine dining restaurant) would benefit from a smaller more focused menu delivering daily specials rather than a hotch potch of over complicated dishes. Steak was never cooked correctly, and the meat in tacos etc was often over cooked and dried out. Cocktail menu is extensive although in reality they all taste pretty similar and are made using sickly fruit syrups rather than fresh fruit. The house all inclusive wines are, however, quite good.

One other point, we booked a "return" transfer from the airport to the hotel. On landing into Cancun, there was no transfer there for us so we made our own way to the hotel via taxi. On arrival, we were told it was our mistake as I had only booked the 2nd leg to the airport - on checking the emails I saw that it must have been a language misunderstanding, given my request for a return transfer, but something to be aware of if doing similar. Not much fun to be standing at the airport in the heat with no transport.

It really is a shame that the resort lets itself down in these ways, we found ourselves tearing our hair out with frustration towards the end of the week, when yet again we've had to walk the 15 minutes to dinner because it's impossible to get a golf cart despite being told it would be with us "straight away." If the hotel can sort out these issues then it really would be great, but as it is, save your money and stay elsewhere in Riviera Maya!
