As the beer reviewer and columnist for Beer Connoisseur Magazine, I kind of make it a point to check out as many beer bar bars, pubs, and breweries as I possibly can when I travel. After years of travel to the Yucatan, and one failed brewpub in Cancun back in the late 90s, we now have Club de la Cerveza, in Playa. Nestled away on the much quieter north end of La Quinta, this is the ideal place to drop anchor and enjoy some amazing beers - both Mexican craft beers, as well as international favorites. We visited twice during the week we were in Playa, and Miguel made us feel like family from the minute we walked in. This pub has such a great, organic vibe, with lots of wood and open airy space, even for such a small location, that it's impossible not to love it. The Beer Geek in me was in heaven, as I got to sample beers from a number of Mexican breweries like (memory's a bit hazy for some reason) Tempus, Cucapa, Minerva, and Calavera. In addition to the Mexican beers, Miguel stocks a fine selection of "imports," including all three Chimays (Rouge, Bleu, Blanche), and one of my all-time favorite Belgian ales - LaChouffe. The food menu is limited given their space, but that does not mean it is not exceptional - far from it. On our two visits we had the pommes frites, crostini with various toppings, onion rings, and one of the finest bratwursts I've had outside of Bavaria. Miguel is truly passionate about his beer, and his passion shines through in the way he keeps Club de la Cerveza going. Even in the face of difficult supply chains, Miguel always has a good number of interesting beers on the list. If you love beer, or if you merely like beer but want to see what the new face of pubs looks like these days, do not miss a chance to visit Club de la Cerveza.
