The tree filled area surrounding the pool is nice, we liked the murals on the walls, and enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks surrounded by tropical birdsong. The food in the restaurant was nice. Casa Tucan is in the middle of Playa, (which is now very commercialised and touristy), but it was quiet enough at night for our children to sleep. We saw none of the problems described in bad reviews a few months ago. However, do not expect luxury at this price. There were clean comfy beds and a functional bathroom. The room was cleaned daily. But the sheets were old and worn, the floor of our room was painted concrete, there were cracks in the walls and ceiling, and occasional insects and even lizards found their way into our room. The pool was clean, but unheated, and therefore too cold for prolonged swimming. If you can't tolerate this, go stay at an expensive resort instead. Our family of 4 really enjoyed our stay at Casa Tucan, and we would highly recommend it as budget accomodation.

We spent a week in Playa del Carmen over the holidays with our two children. We selected Casa Tucan on the advice of a friend. It worked out just right for us. It is a simple place with lots of character for a great price. We loved the location close to the tourist area, beach and the real local community. It is an easy walk to everything from Casa. We had a large room for $70US a night with a table and 2 chairs, a bathroom with a large shower, a double bed and 2 twins also use of small kitchen area. ( no TV or A/C) Our room opened out on the garden and pool and we had ceiling fans to cool us. It is a little oasis with all of the lush greenery. The hotel was quiet too despite the many parties in the streets around the holidays. Each morning I could sit and read by the pool as my girls slept in. We swam every day in the pool and ate many good meals in the restaurant at the hotel. We enjoyed the coffee especially! The pool was cleaned every morning. It was clear and refreshing. Everyone was friendly and kind. Some may feel the hotel is run down but we could overlook that as we feel it was a good value and good place for us to use as a base for our adventures. If you prefer luxury you might be disappointed here. This is a very basic, clean and friendly hotel. Each room is very different and unique. We met many interesting European families here too.

We wanted a budget place for a few days and in Playa there are only a limited number of such places. We decided on the Casa Tucan following a recommendation from 2 fellow Americans we met in Mexico City.

The biggest problem we had was the heat in the rooms. I could just about cope but my friend found it really bad. Also, there was a stale smell in the room which we didn't like. It was also very dark in there, and the light was not good enough in the evening.

The attached restaurant was good and served good portions. We used it quite a few times. I would recommend it even if you aren't staying in the hotel, for at least one or two meals. The 5th Avenue can be kinda expensive to eat at all the time.

The pool was ok and the maids seemed to work hard.

I first came here a few years ago when it was owned by an American called Gary Wendt. Gary had a vision and an energy about him that added to the experience. Sadly Gary sold it and the new owner is rather different. But the Casa Tucan still has something to offer the budget traveller.

Stay in one of the more expensive rooms, as the cheaper ones without air-con tend to be very hot. It is worth spending a little more to be able to sleep properly! I didn't experience any of the bed-bug problems that earlier reviewers have mentioned, and very little cockroach problems, which can be a problem in any hot country. If you spray your room before going out of an evening you can probably alleviate the age old mosquito problem that plagues the tropics. When you return home late evening close the door quickly behind you, minimising the chances of mossies getting in!

The restaurant was great and the portions are generous. I recommend the excellent nachos, and definitely have your breakfasts here as they are good! It is very good value and way cheaper than the 5th Avenida places. Anja's lovely smile stays in my memory.

The receptionist was very helpful in sorting out my trips to the Mayan ruins and I enjoyed my time.

The pool is fairly good but the surface can look dirty with the insects.

Overall a good spot and pretty good value for the money.

We arrived from Perth, Western Australia, after a long tiring flight and wanted to shower and take things easy. The bathroom smelt like a gents toilet, which didn't please us, with a skid mark in the toilet bowl. The shower was so feeble it was laughable. It was almost impossible to shower with the weak spray.
I tried to plug my iPod speakers into the wall socket but it didn't work. I tried the other socket and the sound kept crackling as the current or something is not working properly.
The beds are old and lumpy , and we kept itching during the night. Mosquitoes were present in the room but my mains run mosquitoe repellent didn't work properly because of the electric problem with the sockets.
The next day we ate in the restaurant at the front of the complex. When I was waiting to pay I saw cockroaches running around the bar area and behind the counter. The Mexican chef was visibly perspiring into the food as he made it. We didn't eat there again.
The website mentions a pool bar but it was not working. You could tell by the place that it hadn't been working for a long time. The pool is not clean, and the sunbeds are mostly damaged and dirty.
We moved room after 3 nights but found the same electric problems, and the bathroom only smelt slightly better. Even the bedroom had the same stale smell that we kept masking with deodorant and perfume.
I wanted to speak to the owner about the room but he was never around. The Mexican man in reception said he is always out drinking and spends little time working there.
This place has nothing going for it.

I wanted to stay at a budget place with a pool. This was the only one in the Lonely Planet guide in Playa. So off I went.

The pool is too dirty to swim in. Even if you wanted to, the scuba diving students use it every day and you can't really stay in there when they acquisition it. The surrounding area is very dirty and nobody seems to clear the cigarette butts off the floor or clear up the litter.

The rooms are dark and smelly and the beds are lumpy and old. The drains have a problem also. Cockroaches turn up at regular intervals and the cutlery in the rooms was unclean. It is not a nice place to stay.

The restaurant also had dirty utensils and the plates weren't very clean. The service was not very good. The food was served in decent portions, however.

The Mexican guy in the reception was not interested in his job and spent most of his time looking at the internet.

This is not a desirable place to stay and I l left after 3 nights.

I arrived here with my wife with high expectations having been convinced by a good friend who stayed here previously. We were so disappointed.

The place is not looked after very well and our room was shoddy. The sheets are very cheap and the shower was weak. The attached scuba school would start up around 7.45 every morning and wake us, thanks to the noise they make. But worse was to come. The bed bugs were very bad indeed, causing both of us discomfort. We got our rooms changed but the same thing happened again. Mosquitoes also like the rooms, maybe because of the neglected garden area. It was like a wild garden.

There was also noise from construction. The pool seemed dirty so we didnt use it. The grime around the póol was quite bad, and you didin{t want to sit around the area for long.

Cockroaches kept showing up in our bathroom and we kept showering them down the plug hole. It was an ongojing problem.

Even the safe deposit room stunk of a stale odour and the nearby toilet for people using the small restaurant stank of urine. Every night a group of drunk old Germans who live there would turn up and sit near the entrance area, loud and obnoxious. They got on peoples nerves. The restaurant is nothing spécial with a limited menu. The two Europeans running it seemed fed up, adding to the lousy atmosphere. The small internet cafe is the worst laid out, claustrophobic one I have ever encountered. For tiny people only! It is like an oven. And it isnt cheap.

We left after 4 nights and stayed at the superb Hotel Fusion, on the beach at Calle 6. It was more expensive but well worth the money with a great bar and restaurant. We needed to cheer ourselves up after this below par dump.
