Just back from an excellent week at the Riu Palace Mexico. We travelled just my wife and I and found exactly what we were looking for, a great resort with great staff, beautiful beach and good food. This was our second stay at a Riu Palace, the other was in the Dominican Republic and we feel the Riu Palace Mexico is the best resort we have visited so far. The staff were EXCELLENT at this property, so friendly and helpful in any way, drink service was always great and the waiters in the buffet's were excellent. I have to give a HUGE shout out to Luis who worked the breakfast buffet and lunch buffet, remembered what we drank from day one and prepared a special table for us on our last day at breakfast, always a great smile and excellent service, so well done to you Luis!! We didnt eat any of the specialty restaurants, we spent a few evenings in town at our local favorites and ate the buffet every other evening, which was more than adequate for us. We had an excellent relaxing time on the pristine beach every day, I did a whole bunch of diving with the great folks at scuba caribe while my wife worshiped the sun gods.

We dont mind the more modern decore, we did visit the Palace Riviera Maya and thought it was very nice as well, but really have no preference between the two. We walked over to the Riu Yucatan one day and it was very loud around the pool bar, but no fault of the hotel, there were about 25 people having a great time and thats perfectly fine, we just prefer the little more layed back vibe at the Palace Mexico, and if your in the mood for more you can always walk across the street or next door.

Two minor flaws we noticed, noise traveled easily through the room walls and you can only make dinner reservations on the morning of (which wasnt a hinderance for us but would have been if we wanted the reservations). However the flaws were extremely minor compared to the excellent quality of this hotel.

We are already looking to book for april if that means anything!!

Stayed here in July for our Honeymoon, apologies for the late review!

After a quick & easy check in we went to our room but despite our request for a room overlooking the courtyard area we were on the other side close to the RIU yucatan building work. Normally we may not have said anything but considering it was such a special occasion we went down asked for another room overlooking the fountains etc. After a quick photocopy of a copy of my marriage certificate we were moved within 10 mins to a lovely room over looking the water fountains and beautifully well kept gardens. Massive thanks to Andrea on the front desk for her helpful and speedy service.

Room / Lobby / Grounds / Bars

Apart from the issue with the first room we were very impressed with the layout & design of the room. Unlike other reviews we didnt have a problem with dampness in the room or on any clothes we left out. This may have been because we left the air con or the fan on all the time even when out of the room. The one time we forgot we did arrive back at the room to find the tiled floor to be very damp and slippy. However after 15 mins of the fan and air con on it had disappeared, so my tip would be to keep either the fan or air con on even when out of the room and you shouldn't have a problem.

No issues with the layout of the bathroom or shower either. Loved the his & hers sinks and the walk in shower with the extra large shower head. Do understand why families may not be enamoured with it in regards to privacy though but for us it really wasn't an issue. In regards to the toilet, yes it is small but to be quite honest I wasnt intending to spend a large amount of time in there so doesnt really matter, it flushed so that was fine by me.

The reception area / lobby was, in our opinion excellent. We loved the silver / chrome and purple decor. The coffee shop was a great idea, however I don't like coffee but the milkshakes and various sweet treats were great. The main bar where the entertainment is held and the outside courtyard are very nice. Enough seats and tables and once again waiter staff were efficient and worked very hard. The courtyard in particular was very nice to sit out in the evening and have a few drinks. The 24 hour lounge bar is a good addition as it is somewhere just to escape for a short time out of the sun or away from the busier areas. In there there is a full selection of drinks and some hot and cold food.

The grounds in the middle of the hotel are amazing. Well kept grass and bushes and also great water fountains really add to the character of the hotel. However I did get attacked by a bird near the fountains but not really the hotels fault.

Food -

We arrived early evening so only ate at the buffet for evening meal. To be honest we were very unimpressed with the food on that first night. HOWEVER rest of the time we were there the food was excellent with so much choice that even my wife who can be a fussy eater never had a problem finding something. Breakfast was a delight with a wide range of cooked foods, cold meats & cheese and also variety of continental style items such as cereal and pastries etc. No complaints whatsoever over the quality or freshness of the food. Quick word about our waiter at breakfast Elmer who was excellent. He was friendly, polite and very helpful. It even got to the stage of him having our preferred drinks and bottle of ketchup ready waiting for us!

Lunch at the pool side restaurant was also top notch, once again food looked fresh and tasted great with a great range of food. If you didnt fancy a plate full of food, there was a beach bbq serving hot dogs, wedges and burgers. I only tried the burger but it was very good. Perfect for a quick beach snack. Also the self serve ice cream was ace!

Evening meal (apart from 1st night) was also excellent. Once again freshness and variety was great and no issues. The first night I am putting down purely down to 10 hour flight, jet lag and being shattered so will let it slide.

There are 5 set menu restaurants. We only tried the Italian and the steakhouse. The Italian was a tad disappointing, both our mains of ricotta ravioli and stuffed chicken were lovely however the antipasti to start was not great, neither was the raspberry panna cotta. The panna cotta itself was nice but the coulis on top was tasteless. The steakhouse restaurant was much better, apart from the pudding. We both opted for baked Alaska. When served at your table it is then covered in brandy and set alight. Visually it was good however it then left your pudding drowned in brandy which did ruin it for us. If you don't like brandy I would stop them before they pour it all over and set it alight!!

Overall the food was excellent however the puddings were a disappointment. They always looked excellent however the taste was never up to scratch. The majority of the puddings we tried were bland and tasteless. Every now and again you would get something that was nice but this was few and far between. But overall the actual main meals were excellent.

Pool / Beach -

The pools and sun beds etc were immaculate. we never had an issue with finding an available sunbed in the 2 weeks we were there. The whole pool area looked great and the addition of the over head canopies were welcome if the sun got too hot. They could be easily opened and retracted when required. The pool could be noisy depending on which one you sat next to, but it was never an annoyance or a problem. The staff around the pool were excellent. Waiters came round often to take your drink order then bring it to you allowing you to never leave your sun bed!

Also by the pool there is the gym and spa facilities which I think are at an extra cost however there are 2 large jacuzzis in there which are part of the all inclusive, I recommend you have a look and have a little bit more relaxation.

Staff -

Right from check in to check out, every member of staff was fantastic. From the cleaners to the entertainment team, nothing was ever to much trouble. The waiter staff at breakfast, lunch and dinner were great, they were on hand to get drinks and clear plates etc. Also we never felt that a tip was expected. Personal mention to Andrea who resolved the room issue so quickly, Elmer at breakfast & Javier in the evening buffet restaurant. No problems with any of the staff who do work extremely hard for probably not very much. They are a credit to the hotel.

All in all no problems, we loved every minute of our honeymoon here and we will most defiantly return again.

Just returned from 7 night stay at Riu Palace Mexico, we stayed at this same place 3 years ago before they remodeled. All new beds, with yes, good mattresses, bathrooms all updated, all junior suites includes jacuzzi tubs and separate large rain showers. Daily stocking of mini bars and pool and beach drink service. We tried the Guacamole Steak House specialty restuarant food was great, all served at your table, appetizers to deserts.

Beach area, clean no stones or seaweed floating, beach chairs never need to reserve either by the pool or the beach, more than enough and all brand new lounges and umbrellas.

We were there with 3 other couples. Very friendly place, the majority of people working their had a good command of the English Language. Enjoyed the variety of games and activities that the Animation staff provided. Good place for young families and couples to enjoy.

We just returned from six days at the Riu Palace Mexico with friends. We have been vacationing in this part of Mexico for over 25 years, but this was our first time at a Riu. As so many have shared, this resort is lovely, very clean with the friendliest staff that make your stay perfect. For an all inclusive, we all agreed that the food was better than average. We did eat in the Italian, Krystal, Japanese and Steakhouse during our time there. We all agreed that the Japanese was our favorite but did also enjoy the others too. The staff in the buffet restaurant were extremely attentive and helped make the first part of your day so positive. We always found plenty of lounges at the pool and beach and did not have to play the "towel game".

If you want a place that is clean, absolutely beautiful with very attentive staff and caring management, this is a great choice!

Room Tip: If you can get a room on the right side of the property, it will be less sun on your patio which mak...

Returned from from a 2 week stay at this site, stayed at the RIU PALACE ARUBA last year which was excellent, this property has been refurbished to a very high standard and a lot of work has been done to the swimming pool area and grand staircase, all in all completely refurbished, I must add the RIU team have got the upgrade right with the colours and modern touch keeping the hotel in-line with times.

The food- was very good, you could eat something different every day of the week.

Entertainment- a little disappointing, silly dance routines and very cheesy however quite entertaining laughing at the entertainment team trying their best. If you want a laugh go over to RIU Tequila and watch all the wildlife jump and run over the tables and the quests at the main bar area getting absolutely legless every night, its like a seen from pirates of the Caribbean. Dare I say I was pleased to get back to the Palace.

Service- absolutely outstanding!! the staff here cant do enough for you, my family and i became quite attached to a few of the waiters as they were so nice and engaging.

Rooms- very nice and modern , however a slight Meldrew smell and stale smell in the draws which i don't think can be helped its just down to the humidity.

My final verdict- ignore the negative reviews they are from negative people who look for negative things. A truly excellent holiday at this RIU, will return. If you have already booked then lucky you ! your in for a treat, my 3rd stay at a RIU and this just tops the RIU PALACE ARUBA.

Room Tip: I would recommend a high level room.

I stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico for 1 week October 2013. Prior to travelling, I read many reviews that helped me decide which hotel to stay at, so I figured I might as well pay it forward and write one as well.

I LOVED THIS VACATION, it truly couldn't have been any more perfect. I traveled with my boyfriend and from the first moment at the hotel, to the moment we left, we had nothing but an amazing experience. The service at the hotel is wonderful, all staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was ready by 1:30p.m., and we had a courtyard facing room on the 2nd floor. I didn't mind the open concept at all, nor did I mind the "modern" look. The bed was extremely comfortable, the water pressure in the shower was great. We ordered room service and they were quick and friendly bringing the food into the room and setting it up on our table. The sofa area added nice extra space to the room, although I don't think I actually sat on the sofa.

The hotel grounds were exceptionally clean and spacious. Lots of greenery, palm trees and fountains. The beach was beautiful! Calm, clear turquoise water. White sand beach, and it was never a problem to find a lounge chair. A waiter brought drinks to the beach frequently which was wonderful. The pools were always clean, and we loved the swim up bar. Ernesto was friendly, funny and made our drinks exactly how we requested them.

There was never a problem to find something good to eat. The buffet had lots of variety and selection, and changed every day. The service was amazing at every meal. We ate at Krystal, the Steakhouse and the Japanese specialty restaurants. The steakhouse was AMAZING, highly recommended, plus you can't beat the view of eating right by the beach. Amazing experience. We really enjoyed the Japanese as well. Krystal wasn't our favourite, as it tried to be a little too "gourmet" for us, however this was just personal preference as the food still tasted good.

As for activities and excursions, We did a Xel-Ha excursion, trip to Tulum, 5th avenue, jet-skiing and kayaking. All excursions were great, safe and fun. We loved that Playacar is a gated community, felt safe as well was very clean. The entertainment staff were always present and upbeat throughout the resort and extremely friendly.

I would definitely recommend this hotel, as well would plan to go back in the future. Most amazing vacation!

Just got back from staying at the Riu palace Mexico Saturday 6th October 2013 for two weeks an felt i had to write a review. We had excellent service and the staff was very good and could not do enough for you, they were always smiling and friendly. The food was superb and variety excellent.
The cleanliness was excellent throughout the hotel.
It had undergone complete refurbishment and the modern decor added to this experience the only fault with the room was small toilet cubicle and bath next to bed could have done with privacy curtain in between otherwise it was very good and the service of free internet in the room was a bonus.
The only thing lacking was the evening entertainment which finished at eleven o clock and more professional shows were needed otherwise the holiday overall was excellent we flew with Thomson holidays on there new dream liner airoplane in the Premium cabin What a difference this was compared to the last flight i had we had excellent service by the cabin crew the meals were very good as was the new itv screen in arm rest the only fault is the big central consol which when getting passed to go to the bathroom was a bit awkward otherwise superb flight. would recommend the hotel and Thomson new Dream liner airoplane premium cabin to travel to this destination.
