“Wonderful resort that does everything right!”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

To begin, my husband and I (both in our late 30’s) are seasoned veterans of all-inclusive resorts all over Mexico and the Caribbean. We’ve stayed at some very high end resorts like the Iberostar Grand in Rivieria Maya and Sandal’s in Jamaica. Let me just tell you, that our week at the RIU Palace Mexico was our best stay yet!! This resort does everything right!

The room was gorgeous and spotlessly cleaned each day by lunchtime. We absolutely loved the large shower and double bowl sink vanity, which made getting ready for dinner a breeze. The shower pressure and hot water were excellent which is not the case at many resorts! Our mini bar was replenished each day, and we loved the balcony that looked onto the beautiful grounds. We enjoyed the crisp white design and accompanying linens.

The food was excellent and plentiful. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning. We did notice that the hotel has cut portion sizes down which was a welcome change, in our opinion. We had lunch at the beach buffet, and it was adequate. After breakfast each morning, we’d get a reservation for dinner that evening. Personally, I love the first come first serve way they do it each day. I’ve been to resorts that allow people to make reservations via email for the entire week in advance. Therefore, when you actually get to the hotel all of the reservations are taken. I think this way puts everyone on the same playing field. We ate at the Asian restaurant twice and loved it. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Mexican restaurant. Our least favorite was the Steakhouse, but it was still okay. The evenings we ate dinner at the buffet it was also excellent.

Pool and Beach. We did play the towel game each day, but it wasn’t necessary. We are morning people, so that’s always been a part of our routine. The waiters at the pools are fantastic. You never were more than a couple of minutes away from being asked if you’d like anything. There are plenty of loungers and umbrellas, and the beach bar is a wonderful place to get a cocktail and watch the ocean. We are pool people, but I can report the beach is wonderful. It’s flat and there are an abundance of chairs and shade available.

Other things. I really enjoyed the beautiful gym. The cardio equipment is set in front of a huge wall of windows that look out onto the resort. The coffee bar is a great addition. We really enjoyed being able to get a great cup of coffee. The lobby bar is a wonderful place to grab a pre-dinner cocktail. Even though we didn’t use it, I love the idea of the 24 hour café. That is a wonderful addition. The hotel features free wifi that I never had a problem accessing or getting a signal on.

In conclusion, this is a wonderful resort with fabulous service. I’d suggest it to anyone, and we will be back. Please disregard the negative reviews. This resort is a treat, and we will be back.

Since this was a newly renovated resort expectaions were very high. Once again Riu did not let us down. Rooms are very modern and clean. A dffernt lay out but it worked for us very well. The buffet was great. Only tried the steak house and found the service very slow.(Great Ribs)
Nice pools , pool bar and very nice beach. weather could have been more sunny but at least it was warm.Staff was the best ,went out of there way to please very one.

We spent New Year's at the Riu Palce Mexico with our family of 4. Despite being full, the resort never felt too busy. We did quite a bit of scuba diving and our 12 year old son became certified. Great dives and great fish! One of our favourite spots to go. We tried all the different restaurants and enjoyed them all- you do have to wake up early to line up for your choice of restaurant which was a bit of a pain- but it made it fair to all. Didn't like how NOISY the rooms were after 9pm- could never make it quiet. Also didn't enjoy having 2 double (are they double??) beds pushed together- felt claustrophibic. Kids loved the bath in the middle of the room! I would ask for a second or third story room- ours was on the main floor and had a terrible view (however, we were never in the room). Bathrooms are inconvenient from the beach- but a beautiful beach! Lovely that you can wander between all the RIU's. Great stay in all and they put on a wonderful spread for New Year's. Not a ton of kid activities- wouldn't recommend this resort for small kids.

First impression was a bit over- the- top. We did get used to the ultra- modern decor. First room we were given ( junior suite) had no separation between the bathroom and bed area, two double beds pushed together and no fold out sofa. Since my husband and I were traveling with our 12 year old son, this wasn't a good arrangement for us. We did request a different room and were given one with a curtain separating bath and bed area and also a fold out futon- type love seat. Food was good, I liked the buffet best. We did try the Krystal and the steak and seafood restaurants which were good (not great). I was sick shortly after eating at the Krystal but may have been a flu since my hubby "caught it" the next day.
The pool area is nice but not many use the pool. Many more swimming at the neighboring Riu's. Not many activities for tweens but the "animators" do a great job getting everyone involved in activities. Beach area is beautiful, clan and has plenty of lounge chairs.
We had two experiences where money (which we had not put in the safe) went missing from our room. The first time we didn't report it right away since we assumed we had misplaced it. When it happened again, we did report both incidents. The management took the complaint seriously and did investigate it. (They can tell who has entered rooms based on the key card used). The housekeeper who had been in our room when the second incident occurred denied taking the money but management did reimburse us (100 pesos- so no big deal). Re the first incident, we couldn't narrow the window of time enough and too many employees had been in our room, so they couldn't pin it on anyone with any certainty. We had to return home before they were done investigating and I emailed the manager 3 times before getting a reply ( the last email stating I was waiting for a reply so I could submit my review to Tripadvisor).
Other guests told us they had a maid knock on the door and say she was bringing towels. They had towels and hadn't requested additional ones. This also happened to us also so maybe they use this ruse to see if anyone is in the room.....
So, I would suggest ALWAYS using the safe (which some employees can get into anyway- we found this out when we were locked out of it and someone came with a jump drive sort of thing to open it). Also, maybe put the DO NOT DISTURB sign out (after they've cleaned) to keep employees from coming in when you're not there.

Room Tip: If you want the bathroom separated from the sleeping area, be sure to ask for one with a curtain.

Stayed at the RP Mexico from 1-5 thru 1-12 with my wife, daughter and friend. We had two rooms. We've been coming to Mexico and staying in all inclusive's for 12 years now. We didnt have any trouble with the privacy in the rooms. They had a curtain you could pull if you wanted to take a bath. We all liked the new modern colors but it did take a bit of getting used to as we have stayed at Riu's for years. Stayed at the RP Penninsula in Cancun last October so we knew what to expect. I read some of the negative reviews and wonder if these people stayed in the same hotel we did. They must not understand the quality level of Mexican hotels. Let me put it this way, if you aren't happy after staying at this hotel, never come to Mexico again. It ranks high in comparison to other Mexican hotels. Everything is either new or refurbished. The pools are all new, the rooms are all new, great beach, beautifull grounds, restaurants are either new or refurbished, food is good for an all-inclusive. Service ranks right up there with the best we have ever had. They have a new coffee bar adjacent the the lobby bar and a new self service 24 hour snack bar off the main lobby. For a pre dinner pick me up get an espresso with kahluha, then try an espresso martini. This became a habit as time went on. There are five other Riu hotels in this complex and we went to them all. This hotel is overall far superior to the others. The only negative comment i could make is my daughter got several mosquito bites. if you are suseptable to mosquito bites take some "Off" with you or they also sell it across the street in the shopping center. Our rooms were on the lower floor on the west side looking away from the hotel. Next time we will request a room facing towards the middle of the grounds area where the fountains are. I could go on and on but I hope you get the point. If you want additional hotel info or info on any tours or activities in the area email me, I think we have been to most of them. If you are of the younger crowd and want a challenge ask Hiram, the evening manager in the lobby bar about riding the bull next door. Tell him Miguelito, Amelia, Deborah, and Enrique Eric Thomas ( our Mexican names) told you to ask.

We just got back from the RIU Palace Mexico today and had a very wonderful experience in Playa Del Carmen. This was our second stay at a RIU as we spent time at a RIU in Cabo San Lucas two years ago. My husband and I are in our early 40's, have young attitudes and we are from the Midwest in the USA and enjoy spending time in the sun and socializing while on vacation. We felt like we were on the younger end of the clientele. Overall, the resort was very nice, we liked the remodeled modern European feel and the beach front is second to none. The food was good, not great but enjoyable and about what we expected. We also liked meeting so many people from all over the world. We were glad we upgraded to a palace resort as we could go to all resorts in the Playacar subdivision. There are a few things we didn't enjoy however. The bartenders in the pool area were at times rude and there was even one time when a server rolled his eye when we asked for a drink. Keep in mind we are not heavy drinkers and while friendly, we are not obnoxious. Pants are required for males at dinner time even in the buffet area. I can see requiring more formal dress in the restaurants but the buffet seemed a bit excessive as there were women wearing shorts and tank tops.

We ended up spending quite a bit of our time at the other palace, Riviera Maya, and if we had to do it again we would have booked our stay there instead. The waiters and bartenders were wonderful at the Riviera Maya, the atmosphere was livelier and in general it just had a more relaxed feel. The atmosphere at the Palace Mexico was much less friendly and the employees seemed to not like their jobs very much.

You can walk the beach front to the downtown/5th Avenue district and we did that a few times. All in all, a wonderful trip. We will return to a RIU again and when we return to Playa we will stay at the Riviera Maya instead of the Palace Mexico.

Room Tip: Most of the junior suites back up to a fence area. Spend the extra money and upgrade to a courtyard...
