Had a fab 10 night stay, lovely spacious room with the towel animals and mini bar adding a special touch, the hotel itself was wonderful, spotlessly clean, loved the pool area and swim up bar, food was fantastic, so varied it never became repetitive. Quite honestly if you can't find something to eat I'd be amazed! The beach over at the yuca tan is spectacular, and the welcome breeze was needed! The walk into playa del Carmen was great, you do get pestered, they spot your all inc bracelets and use the ' hello, hello, I am your waiter from last night, this is my mothers shop, I'm helping on my day off' line. I'm pretty good at head down March on but I can imagine some people would struggle, the little shopping complex next to the hotel gives just as good value without the hassle, all in all a fabulous hotel and I loved the staff, highly recommended

This was our first time in Mexico and we were well impressed. The staff were friendly and helpful, hotel was well positioned for beach and for Playa Del Carmen and restaurants catered well for all nationalities and we were never stuck for choice. Rooms were clean, tidy and quite roomy. Our flight was delayed two days due to problems at Gatwick and the Thompson's staff were excellent (although I didn't like them patronising me by calling me 'Darling'). Things that could be improved include: Thompson trips were expensive and although the trip to Chichen Itza itself was brilliant we could have done without the inclusion of visit to underground lagoon and church. We would have liked some written material in the hotel on wildlife and local area. Any finally - not you can do - but some drunken English and German scum seem to be all over the world!

As in all Riu hotels - food was fantastic! Rooms are quite old, but clean and nice. In rooms minibar with gin, rum, tequila and vodka - free of charge :) Nice swimmingpools, but area close to them is dirty, and there is no one who cares about empty glasses, etc.
Staff nice and friendly, nice and good made evening shows.
To the beach 10 min walk, shuttle bus availible each 10 min. There is a bar on the beach.
Generally we had great holidays.

Having just returned home from two weeks in the Riu Tequila. We stayed from 14th to the 28th December. The Hotel was fantastic, and so were all of the staff.
The quality and choice of food, meant that the was always something to tempt the pallette but as most AI holidays the food became very repetitive but always of good quality and quantity.

The rooms were kept spotless but a bit dated and the only disappointments was that there is no tea or coffee making fascilities in the room, which I would expect of a 5 star rated hotel, (we took a travel kettle just in case)

There were two pools one with a swim up bar which was nice on those hot days. There were many sun beds throughout and the pool areas many in the shade or at the pool side but again you need to be early to grab the better ones but with the beach so close it didn't really bother us that much.

The animation team started at 9.30 and finished between 10.30 to 11.00 but to get a decent seat you had to be there fairly early and suffer children’s entertainment which did tend to drag on and the presentation of certificates to the animation games winners other than this the entertainment was fantastic and was probably the best you could get outside of cruise ship performances

WiFi is available for free in the hotel’s foyer but limited to one 90 minute period/day beyond that you have to pay 20us$/day or do what we did is wander over to the sister hotels for a change of scenery, a drink and get a further 90 minutes in their.

All of the staff we encountered from the assistant manager down were extremely courteous and welcoming. Nothing was too much for them and every effort was made to ensure your stay went smoothly.

The beach was a good walk away but a golf cart did ferry people back and fro every ten minutes or so and the sun beds at the beach were in demand but we always able to find one in a shaded spot. The hotel’s sister hotel Riu Yucatan provided drinks and lunch as part of your AI deal which was good.

A taxi to Playa del Carmen cost about £3.50. Its 5th avenue is its main shopping area and bus depot. Super stores such as Walmart are about half a mile in land. There are quite a few restaurants here but the food quality except for a few is mediocre. Brits be warned tipping is expected and you might get chased if you don’t.

We went on various trips, Chichin Itza , pirate night and a trip to Coco bongo which was amazing even for those in not in there twenties so give it a try.

I would recommend this hotel and would be happy to return in the future.

Me and my partner visited the riu tequila in October this year, having red previous reviews I was expecting this hotel to be outstanding and it did not disappoint. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, after being there a few days the staff remebered our drinks order and were always very chatty. Although we chose not to participate the hotel do have numerous activities on throughout the day to keep everyone entertained. The food was excellent, so much choice and they always had a wide selection to cater for everyone's needs. Aswell as the main restaurant you go book to eat in the Mexican, Asian or steakhouse, all fantastic. The hotel was really clean and the rooms spotless, even saw one gentleman up a ladder cleaning the top of a lamppost. You can use the other 2 hotels facilities and for lunch however you are not able to have your evening meal there. Again both hotels are clean and the food is excellent. The other 2 hotels are slightly more modern however I did prefer the tequila as you really felt like you were in Mexico. The hotel is a 5 minute stroll from the beach or you can use the free shuttle buggy that runs all day. The beach is amazing. There is a small set of shops 2 minutes from the hotel or you can visit 5th avenue which is a 30 minute walk. We did only go down to 5th avenue on one occasion as the locals do pester you and try to get you into their shop.... this is not my thing however a couple we met in our hotel got some amazing deals. Overall I can not say one bad word about this holiday it was unbelievable. Will definitely be returning.

I’ve been to most places around the world and this hotel is probably one of the best value for money places I’ve visited. Everything here was to a very good standard, food was good with plenty of variety, really good if you are a vegetarian, rooms were kept spotless and the entertainment was probably the best you could get outside of cruise ship performances.
On our arrival we asked for a change to a room a little nearer the restaurant as with my arthritis walking distances is difficult. We ended up with a room which was as near as possible to the restaurant as you could get. It was also near the pool so everything was easily accessible. However, the practice of early towel placement was all too rife. WiFi is available for free in the hotel’s foyer but limited to one 90 minute period/day beyond that you have to pay 20us$/day.
During our stay I had my 70th birthday and during the meal all of the waiters came to the table and sang their equivalent of happy birthday and presented me with a cake, a nice touch. All of the staff we encountered from the assistant manager down were extremely courteous and welcoming. Nothing was too much for them and every effort was made to ensure your stay went smoothly. Poolside barmen made frequent visits to ensure you always had a full glass of whatever was your tipple.
The animation team started at ten and finished late in the evening as they were mainly responsible for the night time entertainment. The shows started at 9.30 but to get a decent seat you had to be there fairly early and suffer children’s entertainment which did tend to drag on and the presentation of certificates to the animation games winners.
The beach was a good walk away but a golf cart did ferry people back and fro every ten minutes or so. However, sun beds at the beach were in demand and you had to be there early to grab one. The hotel’s sister hotel provided drinks and lunch which was good. The sea was a little rough but warm. Here you could for £60 take a para gliding trip around the bay, flights were on and off a boat about 100m offshore. You were taken there by jet ski.
We went on a Thomson trip to Chichen Itza whilst we were there. Its only problem was the early start 05.30 getting you there for 09.00. you get back by 18.00 hrs. Apart from the initial trip charge you are expected to purchase Mayan calendars, a green aniseed liquor and tip everyone under the sun, our Thomson trip rep was fairly abusive if you opted out on anything.
Apart from him everyone we met were extremely nice and there was a great atmosphere in the hotel, especially around the “watering holes” and conversation was easy with language not really being a barrier.

Room Tip: upgraded apartments are the furthest from most facilities. First floor rooms are out of bounds to Co...

We spent two weeks here before Xmas of 2013 and the great thing about this hotel is that if feels like you are in Mexico. Arriving in the large, open, reception is freshe and welcoming. The rooms are located in a large, tropical, garden - almost lika djungle.

The rooms are spacey, with two queen-siezed beds /approx 120 metres each/. There are nice balconies, a great spacing between toilet/shower/wash basin. Free safety deposit, umbrella and a free bar - with non-alcoholic as well as alcoholic supplies filled up every other day. Plenty of storage and nice small touches of personality, like the non-ending towel figures. For my birthday the rooms was filled up with balloons! The rooms weren't renovated, but they were still kept pretty clean and the Mexican feel of them was something that I appreciated.

Eating:
Plenty of opportunities. Breakfast in the large restaurant gives you many, many choices. Especially we liked the champagne-breakfast on Sundays! Just not enough Sundays in the week! But, as I said, lots and lots of choices! Just go for it. You can sit inside or outside; Warmer and more quiet outside actually!

For lunch we more often went to the buffet at Riu Yucatan, but there was also lunch possibilities at the Tequila in the restaurant between the two pools. More quiet than the Yucatan restaurant, but a bit dark. However, at the Tequila there was rosé-wine for lunch - my favourite. But, wide choice of food here and spicy, but not too spicey. The problem is when it rains, as the ceiling leaks.... And the restaurant is rather dark and gloomy!

Restaurants: There is the large restaurant, but also three a la cartes. The main restaurant is to be preferred. We cannot really speak for all of the a la cartes, as we only went to the steakhouse (which really only is the lunch restaurant, set in another way). Anyway, we didn't like that. It was like eating whilst working or something. Quick, quick......And you could only choose the main course, everything else was set. So, we quickly skipped that and went back to our outdoor part of the main restaurant.

For those with a positive outlook to drinks and different drink option; this is really a nice place. You can get almost anything you want included in your all inclusive, including whisky /Ballantines and JB - just ask for it/ and posh drinks like Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri. The sports bar is open 24hr and saved me on the first morning, when I woke up, jetlagged, at 4 AM and decided to walk around the area dying for a cup of coffee. Cupcakes, fruits and hamburgers as well as all drinks you might desire available around the clock!

Evening entertainment is very good and works, we belive, on a two week basis. Different themes: Mamma Mia, Michael Jackson, Las Vegas, Circus.... etc.

Pool area: This is likely to be on my wish list to make to hotel a little better! The pool area is rather dark, many big trees block the sun - and to be honest, well it is really why we escape northern Europe in the winter, isn't it: To get some sun? So, clear up the area, to let some more sun into the pool area. The pools are not very child-friendly. They are the same depth on both sides of the restaurant, however, one of the pools were more aimed at activities and the other more quiet.

Others: Wifi in room rather expensive, but safety deposit is free. Wifi in reception 90 minutes a day without cost, is valid per electronic device: so if you have both phone and computer: 180 minutes. About 5-7 minutes walk from beach, but little bogey trains runs for those not positive to a short stroll. Handicap friendly, no elevators, but rooms on first floor doesn't have any stairs and the whole area is more or less stair-free! Nice and clean public areas. Fountain bar exceptional! And bar service around the pools a little luxury!

Everyone works hard to keep you happy, from Emilia cleaning our room, to the bartenders and entertainment team. Reception very nice and lively, guests with laptops and phones on the internet with a drink and sometimes evening entertainment. Just great.

What stopped it from being a 5 star hotel? Simply this: Standard of a la carte, darkish pool area, it rained in the lunch area and rooms a little dated. But nice, quality, very good value hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor for more privacy!
