“A very good hotel with excellent staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013

Have just got back from a two week stay at this hotel. This is the second visit in two years and the quality was as good as ever. A very good range of food for all meals, we had a young waiter by the name of Rangel in the dining room and he was brilliant nothing was to much trouble and always with a smile. One of our party celebrated a birthday during our stay and when we arrived for dinner we had a table decorated with flowers and napkins in fancy shapes. All the staff went around with a smile on there face, and the pool bar staff were very good at keeping you supplied with the free drink ever to walking around the pool with cocktails and beer. I can not say a bad word about this place and will be happy to go there again.

We have just returned from a 2wk holiday at the Riu tequila it was amazing!
Flew with Thomson and arrived on 6th march.
Flights
Flights were fine I was a bit disappointed that we had a first choice plane rather than thomsons but the flight was fine on the way out with a good choice of movies! Flight home was delayed due to technical issues with one of the fuel tanks but everything was fine and I would use them again!

Hotel
Arrived to be greeted with a cocktail and was given the key to our room 608 which was a few minutes walk from reception our suitcases followed 10 mins later. The room was spotless, really clean and we had the usual optics in the room as well as an iron and ironing board which was nice as sometimes travelling your clothes do need an iron!
The hotel has two restaurants the steak house which was excellent and the Asian which served sushi and Chinese food which was brilliant! The buffet in the main restaurant was to a really good standard and there was plenty of choice for everyone! Lunch was served in the Lulpita pool bar which in the evening served as the steak restaurant which was brilliant!
The two swimming pools were great and always busy (spring break whilst we were there) little bit cold but is is due to the weather!
If you book with thomsons you can use the restaurant at the yuctan which is the Mexican restaurant which actually was not as good as the Lulpita.
As a Thomson guest you can use the yuctan pool and the beach area as well as the Riu playacar which is brilliant! Everything is so clean and the staff really look after you!
The wifi in the tequila is not great as everyone is using it with their iPads but if you walk three minutes down the road to the right you can buy a coffee in Starbucks and use their wifi which is brilliant I could face time home and it was so much quicker than the hotel plus in the hotel you only get 90 minutes a day free wifi which to be honest is more than enough Internet when you are on holiday!
Trips the only trip that we booked was the dolphin silver swim which was about £120 each person which was amazing I would recommend this trip to anyone be prepared though a disk of 30 photos of two of you costs $120 which is a lot of money!
5th avenue is a 25 min brisk walk (we did it in the heat and are not fast walkers!) or 70 pesos in a taxi which is nice just for a change of scene or to buy some tacky holiday presents!
Overall the hotel is excellent we were not bothered by the coatis they leave you alone and if they come near you just clap your hands and they run away! The staff could not do more for you and the food was excellent we really enjoyed it and did not get ill at all!
Everyone should not hesitate and book it you will have a brilliant time!!

We found the staff the service and the food was very good .The grounds are very well kept and rooms very clean . The beaches are across the street but only a few minuites away ( nice little walk) The only issue we found is that you must put valuables in safe we had a cell phone stolen but as far as I am concerned we should have put it in the safe . Our group had a great time .
PS wish they had king size beds did not like double beds stuck together .

Room Tip: Take a room on the front side sun comes in the morning

This is a good hotel. Clean, comfortable, friendly staff and a wide selection of good food.
Not on the beach, but it is a short walk away, with a buggy service if you wish. You can use the restaurant at either of the two sister hotels which are on the beach.for lunch and drinks.

Endless drinks available from the bars or in your room. The wine isn't great, but everything else is fine. There are 3 themed restaurants - but you need to book early on the day.We tended to use the large buffet restaurant sitting outside on the terrace - do not leave any unattended food as the birds and the lemurs will help themselves.

Playa del Carmen is about 30 mins walk away or 70 pesos in a taxi. Some ruins worth a look on the the way to the town. Avoid the Aviary as it is not worth the high entrance fee.

Coaches from Playa to Cancun, Tulum etc are excellent and very cheap. Just roll up 30 mins before departure and book your seat. .

Negatives - the swimming pool was quite cool . Entertainment variable.

Room Tip: Can be a little noisy if near the road and can be a fair walk to reception from the furthest rooms.

We just return from another great trip to the Tequila. This was our 5th time to this Riu resort since 2007 and we will be back again.

Our children, now 12 and 9, were sad to leave after an 8 day stay.
We loved the changes made since our last visit in 2011. The bar by entertainment hut, the outdoor bbq at lunch everyday and the ice cream cart that comes around just to name a few...

The staff at this resorts works hard. From the grounds keepers to the entertainment staff. They are all very friendly and make you feel welcome.

As always, there is plenty of food to choose from and the variety changes nightly.
The evening entertainment flows well. Starting out with the kid's shows and then fun for the adults. They always engage the audience and it is evident that the staff works hard.

We found that management was very accomodating. They sent us a letter reserving us a place in the steak restaurant one evening as a valued repeat customer. On three of the days, fresh fruit was delivered to our room with a souvenir, thanking us for our business.

We also an incident were we couldn't enter our room safe and a manager came to assist us. After helping with the problem, she arranged to bring in an extra bed for our son to make our stay more comfortable.

We met a varitey of wonderful people who we hope to see again next year.

I could go on and on...

But what sums it up best... "We will be back!"

Our 2nd visit to the hotel and the standard is still a very high one. Staff are impeccable towards you and deserve every tip they get. More Coaties roaming around than the last time, but they never bother you and add to the charm of the place. The food is fantastic and plentiful. The rooms are great, would have loved a bath though lol.
In short, a fabulous hotel in fab surroundings, with fab staff, and on top of that a fab beach to boot.
Having read a few reviews before going on hols I have to laugh at some of the comments people put in their reviews. I'm not saying that I'm correct in all my views, but some people who have a moan about somewhwere like The Tequila, need to be looking to book Hotel Utopia.

The short version: This isn't the Four Seasons, but it's a great place for the price.

The long version: This was our second time staying at a Riu resort (last time it was in Cabo) and both experiences have been great. We had some minor gripes, but overall it's a great value for what you get.

Gripes: The rooms felt slightly worn out compared to the other Riu resort we stayed at. The shower drained slowly, the TV got mediocre reception, there were too few electrical outlets, and the light switches were a bit confusing. Although they go to great effort to create variety in the buffet menu, we got pretty sick of the food after a week.

Compliments: The staff is very friendly and they continually go out of their way to always say hello when seeing guests. Big kudos to Didi and Joshua of the entertainment staff, they were a lot of fun and treated us like friends. The bar tenders were energetic and happy to accommodate all of our weird requests.

The location of the resort is fantastic! Although it's not right on the beach, it is just a short walk (or shuttle ride) away. The Playacar neighborhood is very quaint and safe. It's a gated community full of charming villas and luxurious resorts. The beaches have almost no vendors (which, if you've been anywhere else in Mexico, is very unusual) and the whole area feels very secure and safe. Also, the famous 5th Avenue is just a few minutes away (about an $8 cab ride) and is full of great restaurants, tourist trap shops, and bars.

It always amazes me how clean and pest free they keep these resorts, in a tropical climate I'm sure it's a big challenge. The gardeners are constantly weeding and raking, I didn't see a single bug (other than some mosquitos) or rodent, and they keep the public areas very clean.

We also enjoyed the local wildlife that wander the resort. The raccoon-like "tejones" are adorable and friendly as they root around in the grass or follow people around looking for a dropped morsel.

Although the food can get a bit boring after a few days, they try very hard to create variety each night and it is generally pretty good. There's a huge variety so there's something for everyone. And, if you get tired of it, go have a cheap lunch down on 5th Avenue to break up the monotony (try La Tarraya Restaurant on the beach for an awesome whole fried fish).

Overall, if you want to eat, drink, and sit on the beach, you're going to have a great time at the Riu. Yeah, they don't serve ultra gourmet food and top shelf liquor (but they do have Smirnoff if you ask for it), but they also don't charge much compared to the more high end resorts. Bottom line: it's a lot of bang for the buck and we'll be back!

Room Tip: You'll be constantly walking to the lobby so a room closer to the main building would be nice. S...
