ClubHotel Riu Tequila
Ranked #54 of 213 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 26, 2012

went to this hotel from 1st to 16th June 2012 with Thomson.
Firstly Thomson flight was excellent. We did upgrade to Premier so more legroom, films etc.
Read some previous reviews regarding lack of drink offers. The stewards will offer you the 1st round shortly after takeoff after that its up to you. They wont offer, but if you want to tuck in, just ask and they oblige. In a nutshell complimentary drinks mean all inclusive on demand.
Hotel itself was excellent. nice and clean, food great, no real problems. The 'Jungle' location posted a few problems mainly the pesky animals that tip up your drinks and rumage into your bags around the pool. I also thought whilst laying on the sunbed around the pool, that this hotel could be placed anywhere and because of the jungle location, you would not know where you are. where as if you laid by the Riu Yucatan down the road , you knew where you were. One look at the turquoise sea, white powdery sand and palmtrees, theres no mistaking where you were. Anyway, im rambling.
I will now explain the title of this review. We went here in June which is the wet season. I thought wet season meant a quick storm then clear up and blue sunny skies followed.
Now we may have been unlucky but we had a lot of cloud. Some days were thick dark storm clouds which made the atmosphere incredibly humid. This poses another problem regarding the location of this hotel. No sea breeze around the stage area made the weather at night very humid and unpleasant. we spent alot of the evenings at the yucatan where you get a nice sea breeze.
DOnt want to sound to negative about the Tequila. I would still stay here and also spend time at the yucatan. Next time we would probably return between march and October
We didnt go on any excursions, we were more than happy just lying on the beach watching the world go by, because when the sun does shine its gorgeous.
On the cloudy days we went to 5th Avenue. Not much to say about it really, you just get pestered to bits.
If you want to try something different at night, try Fusion beach bar just beyond the ferry terminal, and obviously on the beach, live music every night. Taxi ride from the hotel just 70 pesos.
Enjoy people

Room Tip: there isnt any bad locations I emailed the hotel a couple of weeks before equest a top floor room

My husband, myself and our 5 year old went here 07/17/12-07/22/12 When we first got here, we were welcomed with a fruit drink as we signed into our room but then was given a new employee to give us the information for the hotel whom didn't give us ALL the info we needed such as making sure we get our reservations in early in the morning 7 am to 10 am otherwise we couldn't eat at one of the specialty restaurants that evening, but we are quick learners so after the first 2 days we figured out to run down to the main lobby restaurant and put our reservations in and also get our lounge chairs at the pool before the pool opened at 8 am. We got to our room when we checked in and my husband touched the glass door on the mini bar and this huge bottle of Rum flew out of the case! He caught it before it fell on the floor and broke. They had the wrong attachment on the bottle to hold it in place and my husband (he is a director of engineering for a marriott) He said it was probably likely they couldn't get the correct parts anymore..... We called down to the desk telling them about it and after 4 hours we went down to the desk and spoke to the very helpful manager and he got someone to come to our room immediately and take care of the mini bar and broken iron. The following day (after some other small incident) We arrived back to our room and there was a little gift and a letter stating we had reservations for the Asian restaurant that evening (which we had gone to the Asian restaurant the night before not knowing we needed reservations!!) The managers are the ones you need to speak to if there is any issues because one thing we realized quickly was that the employees are NOT empowered to make any decision but the managers can help you and they were VERY Helpful and made sure the rest of our stay was wonderful!
Our 5 year old LOVED the kids club which was open from 10:30 am to 12 noon then again 3:00-4:30 pm...... They rehearsed for a play they did on Friday evening, also had a treasure hunt day, went swimming and played. It was great fun for him, even though we were a bit nervous at first leaving him there, he had a great time meeting children from all over the world! The resort had tons of activities to do if you wanted to do anything. Our 4 days went WAY TO FAST!! The food was good, and you have plenty to choose from. All in all we had a GREAT TIME and for the price you really can't beat it in my opinion!!! BTW the beds were not comfy but after a long day we would have slept on anything and there is NO room service and NO coffee pot in the room.... So my poor family had to deal with me with no coffee until I got down to the restaurant in the morning....:)

We had a great time at the RIU Tequila! It was off the beach, but was only a short walk and since we could use the amenities on the other RIU resorts it was not a problem at all! We never seemed to have a problem finding a lounger on the beach either. It was also close enough to Playa Del Carmen if you wanted to walk into town for the day. The rooms were nice and the food was fantastic. The a la carte restaurants weren't really our favourite but since the buffet was so good we were fine with that instead. Tequila also had a nice pool and was an overall a great resort and vacation!

We arrived at the hotel on 30th June with a bit of trepidation after looking at the brochure pictures, but were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the place was. The brochure definately doesnt do the hotel justice, its spotless.
on arriving in our room the reception rang us up to welcome us in asking if all was alright in the room to which we replied yes but the bedside cabinet draw was jammed, well there was someone there within 5 minutes to fix it, brilliant. The aircon in the room was very good and we left it on most of the night as it was that hot. The rooms do look a bit dated but they were more than addequate for our needs.
Food was fantastic morning dinner and evening meals had plenty of choice and looked spectacular with excellent service all round, couldnt fault anything about it at all. Booking for the steak house and oriental restaurant was easy enough and a very enjoyable experience, in fact we never ate out once as there was no need to as the food was varied in one way or another in the main restaurant anyway. In fact you dont need much money at all due to the fact theres no need for any, most of our money went on tipping staff ( Voluntarily) and excursion crews.
Entertainment was excellent and far superiour to the usuall you get on other hoildays, it was really professionally done, with something going on all day everyday, catering for young and old.
The pool was clean and plenty big enough, if you did fancy a walk to the beach it was either 10 minutes walk or 4 minutes on the buggy from the lobby. Beach is amazing couldnt put it into words, fantastic with a cool breeze most of the time. Be carefull though when sunbathing as more than an hour in the sun will burn and turn you into a lobster if not careful.
Finally the people themselves, you couldnt wish to meet nicer and happier people always willing to help you when ever needed.

Will definately be going back to mexico, probably the best weve ever had and we have travelled to may places.

One piece of advise would be to take American dollars as every thing is priced in dollars, we took pesos and the locals had to convert everything from dollars to pesos.

Room Tip: All the rooms were similar, the only thing you have to get used to is the noisy mattresses, i think...

We have just returned from yet another fantastic stay at the Riu Tequila and it was still every bit as good as the last time, the 2 weeks just went too quick. We emailed the hotel in advance to request a ground floor room near reception/pool area and this was arranged with a lovely note in our room welcoming us back! Reception also rang us as soon as we arrived to check we were happy with the room and to see if we needed anything which was nice. They have also changed the checking in process as well and didn't have to queue at reception which was a lot quicker especially after a long flight.

The staff were all as friendly and helpful again working extremely hard. The food was excellent again with plenty of choice. I was a bit disappointed that there was only the outside BBQ at night once during our 2 weeks as that was very good but not a problem as you could always find something that you liked even for fussy eaters. We were able to book the speciality restaurants more easily this time didn't have to get up as early as last year, bookings were still being taken up to 9.00 am.

There seemed to be a bit of a problem with people reserving sunbeds despite notices being displayed telling guests not to do this. This wasn't a problem for us as we went to the beach everyday as there was a nice breeze there as it was so hot. Didn't get so much rain this time either which was a bonus with all the rain we have had at home.

We visited Cancun this time which was ok for a day but not as nice as Playacar too busy and noisy. You can use the facilities and have lunch at the Riu hotel there. We went on the public beach and were charged approx £7 for 2 sunbeds and umbrella and the beach wasn't as nice as ours. You can use the Ado bus service in Playa Carmen from the bus station, it only costs just over £2 each way and the buses are nice with air con, tv and loo on board. Also go to other tourist places so cheaper to make your own way rather than booking excursions. We also went to Xcaret which was nice with lots of animals, dolphins, snorkellingetc.

The animation team worked extremely hard in the humid conditions presenting nightly shows and included children from the hotel guests in some of their presentations doing dance routines. A special thank you to Angel as well who kept our room lovely and clean and left some amazing towel sculptures on the bed.

We will definitely be booking another stay there, all in all an extremely enjoyable holiday. Many thanks to all staff there for all their hard work and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of visiting Mexico.
