The RIU Tequila is the best value for money we ever stayed, ( 3 stars in puerto vallarta to 5 stars dominican). The check in was quick and painless,( arrived 8:30 pm, supper was still availible til 10 pm). We were in the 300 block, ground level, near the street and we found it quite central between the pools and restaurants. Minimal noise from the street, more from the birds at sunrise.
The food is excellent. Breakfast is very good but repetative. Lunch is very good. Supper is awesome! Soups are fantanstic, salad bar is 30 ft long.(cheese at least 3 kinds) Mexican station, pasta station, carvery and main course.is very good . Ale carts is very good , you have to book at 7 am to get a reservation though. The beach is a 10 min walk or 5 min ride on a golf cart ( which is free ). The beach is clean and big with lots of laydowns.

The housekeeping staff is very friendly and thorough with the rooms, The groundskeepers keep the resort clean of garbage and constantly pruning and raking leaves and such. The bartending and restaurant staff are polite and very efficient. There is poolside service but quicker just to just go to the pool bar yourself ( no big deal ).

For first timers to a resort I advise to attend the orientation. They are exremely helpful in regards to tours and local behaviors of vendors in Playa del Carmen so you won't get ripped off.

Room Tip: AC is good once you dial in a comfortable temperature.

Excellent hotel with good facilities, pleasant staff and outstanding food. Two 'a la carte' restaraunts - steak house and asian - steak not really our thing but the asian was very pleasant - however you cannot beat the hotel buffet.

We won't bother visiting Mexico again but I would recommend the hotel if you have decided to go there. It is ideal for families too.

Room Tip: Backing on to the golf course

We had a fabulous time at Riu Tequila mid-March for 1 week. We went with my mother, my sister's family of 4 and my family of 4. Kids were ages 6,8,10, &12. Really enjoyed the resort itself. The pool is beautiful and interesting. We had no problems getting a lounger, in the sun or shade. You are only allotted 1 towel/day, so keep that in mind. We shared towels so that we always had a dry one at the end of the day. Lots of activities we joined at the pool. Kept our large group entertained. One caution- hydrate! Our kids spent so much time in the pool, not enough water. Btw, water from the soda fountain is safe to drink1- Its all bottled. Just don't drink out the taps in the room. The rooms were the only thing that didn't seem 5 star. They could use an update in bedding and the pillows were few and flat. The room was clean and the bathroom large. We did change our room once, as our 1st unit backed right onto the street- lots of street noise. Our new room had a great location, but the fridge leaked a bit and our neighbours smoked, so we never did sit out on the balcony. Those minor issues aside, everything else was favourable. The food at the buffet was really good! Much better that the 'restaurants'. The Mexican was disappointing, not much I liked. Nothing the kids liked, we went to the buffet afterwards. That night happened to be seafood night in the buffet and looked great. We always found a good dinner for all of our tastes, there. Breakfast had tons of options. Lunch was good- lots of pizza nad pasta. There where always lot of salads avaiable, but we had been warned by a number of people from the area to avoid them. Avoided the Chinese, as per previous reviews. Went to the Riu on the beach for dinner & lunch one day; Tequila is much, much better. We took advantage of alot of the activities offered, including, Ping Pong, basketball, water polo, dance lessons, water aerobics, bingo, pottery painting. Evening shows were mostly good. Especially like the 'haunted one'- not scary at all, but really good. The casino night and games night in the foyer were really fun. Took 2 excursions thru Apple; great. One was snorkeling in a cenote, then snorkeling at a beach. We got a red flag due to the wind at the beach, so had to cancel the 2nd half of the exursion. Apple refunded all of our $$! Best thing to do;; Xcaret! Awesome! Expensive but totally worth it! (Will review that later). 5th ave was fun, but too long with the kids. - My daughter got her hair braided for $15. Always felt totally safe everywhere. Went jogging by myself around Playacar and on the beach. Being a block off the beach was no problem. It always felt good to get back 'home' to our resort. Prefered it to the one of the beach. The kids named the couple of resident iguanas. Even I liked them by the end of our trip. The 'racoons' were really no bother. Fun to watch.
This trip exceeded my expectations; I can't wait to go back!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in #511. I recommend the top floor, facing the pool. It was quite every evening.

Firstly, I can not fault the hotel at all. A wonderful hotel room, fantastic food, the staff excellent.
However....
We booked this through Thompsons. The travel arrangements were not spot on. The two trips we booked - one was not as advertised (still showing incorrect information 4 weeks later) - the other cancelled with 8 hours notice. Reps were pleasant but ineffectual (local rep didn't know wher the archaeology was within the compound!)
If you want a holiday with sun, endless food and drink, noisy entertainment, lots of kids, overeight English boors with mahogony wives - this is the place for you. If you want to see Mexico - certainly don't bokks your trips in the UK and question the reps and the sales people VERY CAREFULLY!

Room Tip: We had a room facing the pool with a little patio. A tad more privacy would have been nicer - so if...

We booked this holiday as a 40th birthday trip with our friends. After booking, kept reading bad reviews, where they come from i have no idea!!
The hotel, staff and entertainment staff were amazing. Very friendly, very helpful and couldn't do enough for you.
The hotel is so clean its unbelievable, they are constantly cleaning and tidying. The maid service is exceptional.
The room was very big and spacious and had everything you could need. Iron, ironing board, hair dryer (plus the mini bar and 4 optics!!). A massive wardrobe, with a lot of hangers, another 6 drawers and 2 drawers in the bed side tables.
We asked for 2 rooms together and on the second level which they were able to do. Felt very good that they had listened to our email.
The food is fantastic, not sure why anyone would complain. Plenty of choice at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We tried 2 of the separate restaurants, both amazing food. The steak house put on a special birthday dinner with champagne and cake-wonderful!
We are just an average family, who left our holiday feeling very special and cared for :O)

Room Tip: We asked for a second level room, as that is what we had read about others asking. It had a higher c...

Nice very clean hotel. Great for families with children. Worry-free vacation in a very safe and secure town on Carribean sea. Great beach, good food. Pretty landscaping, plenty of exotic animals.

We travelled to this destination in September 2011. The vacaion in total from Canada was 1600.00 all inclusive for two and once of the biggest reasons we travelled at this time of year.

We knew that this spot was not right on the beach. There was a trolly car to the beach which was convenient and the walk wasn't too bad, but it wasn't the same. We have always stayed on the beach and will continue to search for the beach resorts for future vacations.

The pool was very nice and if you are pool people you cannot go wrong with this place.
We did not go to any of the evening shows so cannot comment on them. The food was decent at the buffet. We did not try any of the other restaurants. The hotel rooms are very very dated and in dier need to a cosmetic overhaul.

We didn't realize that when we went it Mexico's Independence Day, so for one of the weekend's the resort filled up to full capacity which caught us off guard. We will be sure not to travel to Mexico during this time again and also during their Holy week in March/April. This is their time for vacationing and celebrating.

The weather was very hot and humid. We did go for a couple's massage at the resort spa. It was wonderful and very inexpensive as compared to othe resorts i.e. Iberostar. We went to 5th Avenue a couple of times, but it really turned us off this time as the shop keepers had very little business this time of year and really wanted you in their shop, some were down-right insulting. Being their slow season, they come down almost to half if you did find something you wanted.

All in all it comes down what you are looking for in a resort.
