The Riu Tequila is not a 5 star resort. It is a solid 4 star. We have stayed at several different all inclusive resorts on the Playa del Carmen arrea. This was the first non 5 star for us as we like to try a different resort each year.
With that said this was the first AI resort would would consider returning to. It does not have the WOW factor of a 5 star but it has many other atributes that make it a great value. First impressions when you pull up to lobby, less marble and glass than a 5 star. Good quality ceramic and mosiac tiles, open air arches leading out from lobby area and beautiful wood trimming. You are not met with a welcome drink, but it is probabley the only time you won't have one if you desire a drink.
There is a sports bar open 24/7 with food, drink and the best sporting events from around the world non stop. Two bars at theater/plaza, a swim up bar and a bar at the Lupita dining hall. Your room will have a stocked mini fridge and 4 bottles of different liquear.
The food was the best AI resort buffet style we have had. The main dining hall, at the lobby, made omlettes to order for you, other areas had pancakes, french toast, bacon, sausages and dozens of other hot breakfast items. There was always multiple trays of cheese, thin sliced ham, turkey and fresh produce. The bread and pastry area never had less than 12 types of loaf breads and sweet treats, all as good as a high end bakery. Last but not least was a fresh fruit, yogurt, ceral and dried fruit station. If you couldn't find something to enjoy you must be living on poptarts.
Lunch was served buffet style at the Lupita or you can use several other buffets in the Riu complex. There are 5 different Riu resorts all connected in playacar. Pizza, hamburgers, hotdogs, pastas, salads, french fries, fresh produce and fruits, many yummy desserts and soft serve ice cream are the main stays but they always have different hot foods and soups everyday.
Dinner features fried chicken, pork chops, prime rib, grilled chicken, an area that made 4-6 different pastas to order for you in a matter of minutes, dozens of sides and traditional mexican dishes, Fresh fruits, salads, meats and cheeses, desserts and hard serve ice cream. Waiters bring you wine, beer, water and soft drinks. You can get them your self also if you desire.
We ate at the steak house one evening and the asia resturaunt twice. Both good. You have to make your reservations between 7-9 am the day you want to go. There is always a line at 7 am to do this.
The rooms were slightly larger than the standard American hotel chain rooms. Beds very comfortable, all the other resorts we have stayed at the beds were as hard as the floor. Plenty of closet and drawer space for clothing, free in room safe, oversized shower, no tub. Rooms always cleaned very well, balcony small but functional for 2 people. Not a lot of WOW factor in the rooms but they were bright and in good condition. A curtain seperates the sink and closet area from the main area for the shy people, standard american toliet, wc, with a door that closes. This is not always the case for a mexican resort.
Put away all valuables when not in room. I had a pair of expensive sun glasses disappear while at the beach and the maid helped himself to a new pack of gum I had sitting on the dresser. He did only take one piece. So I did not leave a tip for him when we left, it was a $120 pair of sunglasses.
The grounds had tropical feel with palms and coconut trees, many flowers in bloom and manicured nicely. Wide walk ways made it easy to get around.
The Tequila is not on the beach. It is about an easy 8-10 minute walk on a wide well kept paved path to the beach. There is a seven passenger golf cart shuttle that runs constantly from 8 am to 1 pm and 3-5 pm. The beach is shared by several of the Riu resorts but is huge. We had not problems getting beach chairs in the sun or back under the coconut trees.
The entertainment crew at the Tequila was second to none, always something to do and the staff friendly and helpful.
Playacar is a gated area on the south end of Playa del Carmen. It is safe to walk around here and many areas of Playa del Carmen also.

Stayed for 2 weeks January 2012. With the exception of the main dining room this hotel is European 3/4 star standard. Bed and bed linen quality is very poor. Don't let agents sell it to you as 5 star. Very clean though and staff are excellent especially entertainment staff. Main dining choice is good but steak restaurant (for which you have to queue before 7am to get a booking) is very poor, oriental and mexican restaurants are reasonable. Best days out are to ecopark at Xel-Ha and speedboat jungle safari at Cancun. Tulum worth going to but quality of guides in inconsistent. Chitchen Itza a good 3 hours plus each way on coach, a little disappointing compared to Egyptian Pyramids etc.

Room Tip: We asked for quiet room on upper floor and were accommodated.

Spent my boyfriends birthday here in August 2011 - had a wonderful time! The staff were lovely, the food was good! Didnt try a la carte as i wasnt sure if i could eat there being veggie and all. The grounds were beautiful and the little animals running around were sooo cute!! The beach was like a 5-10 minute walk and there is a buggy for all the lazy people :p lol. Beautiful beach! When it got a bit hot at the beach we would often visit one of the closer riu hotels to cool off in the pool which was convienient!

The drinks at the bar were a bit naff as i found i couldnt get drunk no matter how hard i tried lol.
The rooms were lovely and clean and the towel art was awesome! The entertainment wasnt really our thing but the team worked incredibly hard and the kids seemed to love it!

Would highly recommend swimming with whale sharks if you go at the right time of year! it was amazing..even if we were highly hungover due to an amazing night at Coco Bongos (another must do!!!)

Also, beware of the steps if it rains! Had hell of a fall after a little rain session! Ouch!

Overall, a fab holiday - have recommended and several family members have since visited or booked to go! :)

This hotel is simply brilliant and it offers everything myself and my husband require on holiday. The staff are very friendly and always happy to help. Our maid was fab and made lovely towel displays everyday. The food was great and packed with flavour (which can sometimes be lacking in some all - inclusive resorts) The pool area is great with a lovely swim up bar and a great family area. The beach is lovely and we really enjoyed the 5 min walk especially after a big breakfast. We also loved the animals!

First of all all the staff at Riu should be given medals for services to the Mexican tourism industry. The staff are amazing, nothing is too much trouble for them, they enjoy making your holiday special. All the staff smile and say hello this helps create a very friendly holiday environment. I noticed all nationailties seem to get on. We met Americans, Argentinians, Italians, French and Canadians all wonderful people.
The food was excellent, top draw, the best we have ever experienced. Rooms were great very large comfortable beds, nice balcony for us looking onto a Palm fringed jungle area, it was lovely.
The animation team get it spot on they will encourage you to join in if you want to, they are not pushy its entirely up to you how active you want to be. There is a full sports activity program which is very professionally carried out. We took advantage of all 3 hotels that you may use. We enjoyed the Playa car at lunch times and their side of the beach presented us with a nice change.
The night time entertainment is very good. The staff put on in promptu BBQs, festivals and local Mexican dance shows and Mexican bands. The swimming pools are superb with Mexican music adding to an enjoybale exotic atmosphere.
The gardens are wonderful, beautiful palm trees coconuts in abundance, colourful plants and flowers everywhere.
My wife and I were thrilled everyday and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our time at the amazing Riu Tequilla.

Gratias amigoes,
Paul and Dawn.

Room Tip: Walk through the Palm fringed Boulevard areas to fifth avenus about 35 minutes and then walk back along the beach to work off the food anddrink excesses. A really nice walk.
