“Good resort, especially if you have children”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

The resort is large and very well laid ourt. There is a lot of things to do with children and there are no less than 4 swimming pools. However 2 of these pools are reseved for select and elit guests.

The standard rooms are ok but a little "tired". These are being refurbished to a higher standard though.

The Select (adults only) area pool, including jacuzzi area, and guest house are lovely, but it would be good to have a swim up pool bar. There is waiter service which is good, though. There is also a restaurant next to the pool which serves good food.

The Elite area swimming pool is really lovely. The main complaint is that there is absolutely no shade in the mornings. I am hoping this is sorted out before we visit again. There is a restaurant next to the pool will only allow you in to eat if you are dry and the only food they would serve us outside was guacamole and corn chips. Either there must be food able to be served outside if you have just come out of the pool or the seats are changed inside the restaurant to allow you to eat if you are wet.

One complain with all of the a la carte restaurants is that there are insufficient waiters who can speak English. We received meals we had not ordered and some items were not delivered at all. And that was after pointing the items out on the SPanish menu. The staff are all eager to please but get it wrong too frequently.

Our holiday in the Sandos Caracol was perfect from start to finish. Upon checking in we were upgraded to the adult only select club. Special bookings had been made for us in the A La Carte restaurants and we were wished a happy anniversary immediately. Our room was a dream and it was kept spotless by Alfonzo.

The select pool and bar was amazing. Alfredo and Alina were suberb hosts and a credit to the hotel and their country. In fact every member of staff we encoutered was very polite and friendly.

It is without a doubt we will return to Mexico. The food and hospitality was second to none everywhere. Our 10 days were not enough; we have so much more to see.

Thank you for making our first trip to Mexico so memorable.

Wendy Sawyers - Portsmouth, England

Room Tip: Select club rooms for adults are away from the main centre and much quieter.

Hello and thanks for reading this 100% honest review, i am a bit late writing this which is my fault but having reading some of the other reviews i must say that im very put out by what people are saying, i no that every one has different taste and qualities and a holiday is what you make it, but sandos was so amazing that me, my husband, our 2 children, my mum and dad,my Nan and a close friend are all travelling back here in April....so lets start
first of all like i said it was a honeymoon so straight away we was upgraded to select club, and our room was great we had a top apartment, with a Jacuzzi bath, a mini bar that was filled every day and we was greeted by slippers, champagne, cheese and grapes, free clothing and flowers all that was fantastic.....
The rooms fitted in nicely with the eco theme our bed was huge and al was very clean, the electric safe was also great.
The beach....well what can i say i dont think me and my husband could sit still for 10 min we honestly thought we was in paradise, the sand was as white like baby powder and the sea was crystal blue and warm like a bath AND I PROMISE U THERE WAS NO SEAWEED, NO ROCKS AND NO CORAL???. we could swim right out to the banks that they have in the water and it was waste high still which is very handy if you are not 100% with the water, over the select club i must admit yes there was 3 rocks???? but how can you complain about that? go to the other side and dont go near them?
to be honest we never really used the pools only to cool down after being by the sea all day and there we would have a cocktail in the water which is a experience, and the pool was all ways clean and we never had no problems.
The food unbelievable, we ate all the time and there was so much choice, from your steaks to your mexican! just every thing you can imagine it was all there..
the resort it self is massive but very easy to get around, we fount that the animals where all in a good shape and was treated very nice, the swings in the 24 hour bar are great and make the holiday a bit more fun!
entertainment was fine but being newly weds and not having kids we went a bed early :-)....
and the staff all so helpful, we did get asked about time share we said no an that was it we was left alone....
so in all we had a amazing time and i cant wait to return! all i would say that if you do want to go, go the right time when there is no rain or no heavy wind then maybe the sea will be how we sea it and that was OUT STANDING!!!!

I spent 4 weeks at the hotel whilst working nearby, although I was working I enjoyed my stay at the hotel and would like to return for a holiday sometime.
Whilst there my family sent me a parcel by post which did not arrive till after I returned to the UK
I contacted the hotel and Mariana Urtaza traced the missing parcel and arrange for its return to me in England. Mariana is truly a credit to the Hotel, going that bit extra to help me in what appeared to be an impossible situation.
Well Done Mariana

I am about a year late to write this review on Sandos Caracol, but since we traveled extensively in the area in the last several years, here it is.
LOCATION AND SETTING. The resort is huge, but layout is well-coordinated and fairly easy to get around. It is just North of Playa Del Carmen town, about 5-10 minute drive. But, if you plan to catch a collectivo or public transport, it is at least 20-30 minute walk to the road. The setting is amazing, lots of tropical vegetation and fauna. Unlike many other big resorts that are poorly designed and confusing, all ammenities and restaurants are very well located in close proximity to one another. It feels more like a small town rather than resort.
BEACH. Beach is nice, but the water is not comfortable for swimming due to rocks and corals. It will be a disappointment to people to whom beach is a priority. There is a path there that is sandy and clean, but it is narrow. The bars and restaurant are right by the beach - very convenient and easy, especially with kids. The beach area gets quite crowded and it is a task to find a chair after 9 am.
POOL. There are several pools on the property. Main pool is close to the beach with food and bars between the pool and beach, very well positioned for a relaxing, laid-back day. It is clean and taken care of. We had Select access, but used Select areas rarely (they are quite dull and remote for our liking, but others seemed to enjoy peace and quiet there) except to get premium-brand alcohol.
RESTAURANTS. Buffets are typical AI buffets, better than some we have been to but nothing special. Good variety, but same day after day. Restaurants are just OK, with Mexican being very good. Overall, nothing really to write home about but can't say anything negative either.
ROOM. We were in a 2-story building about 5 minute walk to lobby and 7 to the beach area, it was cleaned very well and did not smell at all. No complaints at all.
ENTERTAINMENT. Good. There is plenty for the kids to do - kids club, shows, superhero-dressed guys entertaining kids, almost daily pinyata breaking, pool games. Grown-up entertainment is typical AI fare.
SPA. The spa is nice, great sauna, an excellent place to relax after a day in the sun before dinner.

It is a large resort, great for families with lots of things to do. However, we will not return because we simply decided that smaller, more intimate resorts are to our liking, not because Sandos Caracol left a negative impression.

Something for everyone. Carol the zoo keeper takes you on a tour of the zoo on site & explains all the different trees, animals, birds & reptiles. The kids club go feed the pelicans, turtles & check out the monkeys. Playground is quite new and the diving under the resort should be completed now. The spa is the best place to relax. A big new bus takes you into the city twice a day but get in line early to get a seat. So close to the city that you could walk. Watch out for sea urchins, every day I saw someone getting a prickle out of their fingers or feet. Every night a movie in the theater complete with small bar & popcorn. Mini disco for kids & a pinata on Mexican night. I loved the select club with the beach house/library/bar/billiards/internet/beach beds/ private pool & restaurant. Stretching & aqua-size are great & don't forget BINGO by the pool. I loved the steak house & Brazilian & beach restaurants (no little kids allowed). A few things you could bring are face-cloths & straws. Most of the cleaning staff in our building were males. So many places to explore at this resort you won't go hungry!
