Just come back from the Tucan having spent a fantastic two weeks here. Great hotel, good staff, all very polite and helpful. Loved all the animals

Beach is excellent.

We tried the Steakhouse, Japanese and Mexican restaurants. The buffet was ok but gets a little boring after a while but there are some super restaurants in Carmen

Bad points. No wifi except in reception and its pricey but helped me not to keep checking my mail every 5 minutes. The house red wine was pretty bad too, otherwise all drinks were great

This may be considered kind of 'update' to my previous review (dated Jan 2011).
Now when the kid is older and taller we started noticing a few things:

- restaurants (general, plus palapas) are designed mostly for adults. there is no 'kids corner', so little kids can't really pick food on their own. also if the kid grew out of the high chair and needs to use the regular one, there are no boosters. we had to get extra seat cushion from another table's chair.

- restrooms: again, little kids have to use toilets only (all urinals are positioned for adults)

- for some reason (which receptionists could not explain) they're taking down shower curtains (at least in our room we didn't even have shower curtain rod). that may create extra mess in the bathroom

- improvement: kid's club is now in a room with walls (renovated)
- improvement: palapa got outside tent, so even in rainy weather you can enjoy breakfast/lunch outside
- improvement: some rooms (like ours) are getting flat-screen TVs

Overall we really enjoyed our vacation.
The food and entertainment were great (though we didn't go to a-la carte restaurants).

Room Tip: if you're okay with pretty loud 'nightlife entertainment' you can live in any block. ot...

Stayed at this hotel from the 1st jan - 13th. To be honest I wanted to stay longer as I felt it wasn't long enough to see all the things I had planned. However, hotel is very clean you always see plenty of staff continuously keeping the grounds and hotel itself very clean.
I stayed in block 14 on the middle floor then asked to be moved to the top floor in the same block when they had a room available as this is where all the monkeys can be seen. They came on the balcony every morning and the children loved it especially. After experiencing this for a while I upgraded to the presidential suites along the beach for the rest of the stay. They are huge, 3 bathrooms 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and a massive balcony with a jacuzzi, sun loungers and dining area outside at an additional $200 per night - well worth it. The presidential suite itself occupies a whole half a block and they are all located on the top floor right on the beach - what a view.
Minibar was always stocked and all included. Room service included between certain times. Staff were very friendly especially the entertainment staff who were a very lively and fun crowd. Mauricio especially in the pool aerobics always got everyone going and even the people around the pool got up and danced around the pool. My son loved the kids club he's 9. Couldn't get him out of there.
The beach is beautiful - we didn't try any water sports as they were unavailable due to the sea being choppy for many days. The dive centre on the beach is excellent, dressell divers. They are always busy and make you feel very welcome.
Food is ok. Plentiful I think they do vary it a little but to be honest the buffet I think is better than the a la carte restaurants that we booked. The good thing is with being all inclusive is that if you don't like what's in the a la carte you can just walk to the buffet restaurant and have something there. The quality of food in the Mexican was very poor, the Italian was not far off the same the best out of the lot is the Japanese. Food was better there and it's a bit of entertainment as well cause the chef cooks the food in front of you and does tricks while he's preparing and cooking it.
Drinks were plentiful - this is the first all inclusive place I have stayed in where the waitress staff are continually circling the pool area and beach for you to order drinks you really don't have to move from your lounger.
Great tip - get a phone card from reception it's $20 for a week unlimited calls abroad. We were a family of 8 so we had 4 rooms altogether but just bought 1 card and made all our calls from 1 room. Great value for money.
Get up early if you want a subbed in a good position. We were down at 7am and there were already so many beds reserved in good locations around the pool and beach.
Brilliant trip!!! - captain hook. This trip was amazing. It's in the evening from cancun and it's a definate must. In a nutshell you have 3 pirate ships that set sail, entertained by pirates, lots of games and amazing food. We had the lobster. Outstanding! Then once sailed out and fed the 3 pirate ships meet and begin their antics, flying on ropes from one boat to the other with sword fights etc. Then we sail back with dancing pirates and guests on the dance floor. All drinks are included on board.
This hotel is great for families as there is plenty to keep everyone occupied of all ages. Our family ranged from 9 yrs to 70 years old.
Grounds are splendid and full of wildlife. Plenty to see.
Food isn't brilliant but it was a good fun filled holiday with good service. Would recommend this hotel.
Tip- the beds are hard to sleep on so ask for a mattress topper before you stay and this solves the problem. Also we were informed that all the mattresses in the hotel are slowly being replaced.

Room Tip: Block 14 for the monkeys 1st floor or 2 nd floor. Or even better presidential suites on the beach.

On Arrival We were very impressed with the reception area open plan, no outside walls!reception staff all helpfull especially with the internet. Rooms spacious, and pleasant.Did have a strange smell tho. Bottom floor Block15. Rooms lovely and clean with a towel display every day. Good selection of food in the buffet, but need to ask for a hot plate or food does go cold before you eat it. Just ask and one of the helpful staff will get you one. However if anyone from the hotel management is reading this, most of the complaints about the food were because of the cold plates! Easily put right i think? Beach beautiful. pool lovely, clean. Pool area immaculate,Thanks to Gladys for serving our drinks as we sat and sunned ourselves. thank you also to the entertainment team, something happening all day long, but never pushy, join in if you want chill if you dont. The spa ladies are around on a regular basis asking if you want any treaments, but they are very pleasant and a polite no sees tham on their way. Big thanks to Morritsio, for the zumba class every day at 4 on the beach AMMMMMIIIIGOS! So enthusiastic and full of fun, as were the whole of the team. One of the best features of the hotel are all the animals, we saw Squirrels, agouti, peacocks,( Male peacocks does his full display outside the back of block 15 everyday at about 5oclock. Amazing! ) flamingos, hens, monkeys,Who woke every morning at 6 with strange calls, and iguanas. The paths through the rainforest are just littered with them, they never bother you, too busy looking for food. You can walk into playa del carmen along the beach, or along the road, where you will find a Mayan temple open to all just set back from the footpath. It takes a good 30 mins tho, so we took a taxi for about £3.00. Stayed at Sensatori last year, where the food was better, but enjoyed this holiday as much for other reasons. Our Thomsons rep Siobian was full of tips and had great local knowledge. We had a fantastic holiday here hope you do too.

We spent our honeymoon at the Tucan January 16th till January 23rd. This was our first holiday outside of Canada I was very skeptical of going on this trip but thanks to the staff at the Tucan, the wonderful resort and all the amazing excursions in very close proximity to the resort we had a honeymoon that we will never forget.
The resort is simply beautiful the jungle, thatched roofs, open air dinning, all the beautiful decor everywhere, and every thing kept extremely clean at all times. The gifts for our honeymoon from the resort was simply wonderful a bottle of wine, a basket of fruit and a plate full of beautifully chocolate covered tuxedo dressed strawberries with icing roses on the plate very memorable.

All the staff very kind, friendly,
helpful, and so hard working. Everyone working so hard to make everyone's holiday so amazing. The rooms the beach and the whole resort kept amazing clean at all time rite down to the ashtrays being cleaned and stamped with the star at all times. The entertainment at night was amazing worked so hard to get everyone involved and having so much fun they were great. Front desk getting involved in a excursion mix up till it was resolved even though it was not booked through the resort at all.

The food at the buffets and a la carte restaurants was wonderful huge selection, everything really tasty and creative, and the service was simply amazing it was very rare to run out of coffee, juice or a drink with out another one being brought to the table. I had a number of drinks at many different places through out the resort none watered down all very well mixed and tasty. The Japanese restaurant was an amazing experience all on its own with the chef preparing the meal and showing off all his little tricks rite in front of everyone at your table, not to knock any of the others as they were amazing all on there own!!

The rooms were amazing huge shower, two wonderful shower heads, the mini bar stuffed full every day, a wonderful towel creation in the room everyday. Our first day two beautiful swans made into a heart with flower peddles on the bed shaped into a heart, flower peddles around the sink, and a rose in the shower curtain.... Amazing greeting to our room. To touch the beds were more firmer then I am used too but still slept like a baby every night. The rooms were kept amazingly clean everyday.

The wildlife around the resort was wonderful flamingos, peacocks, turtles, tucans, macaws, iguanas, agoutis, coatis, many different varieties of birds, spider monkeys and howler monkeys. All were wonderful but the almost daily howler monkey visits to our balcony were simply amazing a total highlight to our trip!!!

Lastly after our stay at this resort we are no longer skeptics of traveling to mexico but we are a little concerned that we could never find a better resort to stay at then the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal. Thank you to all the staff for a very amazing wonderful honeymoon.

i also think its a pity they could not be more hygienic the same at night in the resturants . the al-a cart resurants are better . but again hand sanitizer should be a standard thing as entering .
the enterainment is fab they really work hard
by the way it rains alot in dec and is cold at night

Dear Guest,

First of all we would like to thank you for visiting Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal and taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback in regard to your recent stay with us.

We would like to apologize for the inconveniences you encountered with the room assigned. The weather in the area is humid and if rooms are not kept with the air conditioning running with doors locked properly, moisture will be start affecting the room and its amenities instantly.

Thank you for appreciating our natural style and well maintained areas, they are very representative of our hotels.

Iberostar Hotels and Resorts work very strictly according to the internal and external hygiene regulations. The hotel has a specific Health & Safety department which works in association with consultancy of an independent external company who is in charge of verifying our hygiene procedures. We can guarantee you that there is nothing to worry about this situation, we will not take any risk in this matter. We do check platters temperature regularly and do not fill them completely to avoid food getting cold, but the fact that food is exposed open air and that temperatures (climate wise) have not been high during the last few weeks, make it difficult for us to maintain such food very hot at all times.

We certainly believe that our guests’ comments provide us with useful insights to assist our staff to identify areas of concern. We will review along with the department involved the issues presented.

Warm regards,

Quality Manager

The hotel is huge. Lovely decor, open to nature. Walking the paths around the hotel is very nice, we actually saw monkeys in the trees, and other wildlife wandering around. Spent most of our day at the beach, water was warm, beach is wonderful, the pool was actually to hot and crowded for me. The rooms are fine, the beds are alittle hard but we didn't spend much time in our room. The food is ok. Not much American food to choose from, by the 3rd day I was tired of trying something new and I along with 3 others developed stomach problems the last 4 days. The buffets are outside, I am not to confident that the food stays at a safe level for consumption, started to get very picky of what I ate, watched for fresh food to be put out. The staff is extremely friendly, they could have more people on duty for getting drinks around the pool and the beach. I would of given this hotel a 5+ rating if not for the food.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your detailed hotel review. We appreciate your positive comments and feedback about the hotel, pool and the rooms.

We have shared your comments with our hotel team and we are all very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We regret to hear that you got ill while on vacation, Doctors say that a variety of causes could be associated with the ailment such as change of climate, consumption of alcohol or even the change of food and water type.

The hotel itself has a special Hygiene and Security Department which controls the procedures of the kitchen and food preparations very carefully, and we also work in association with a consultancy (Saniconsult) which comes in regularly to verify our system procedures and we always get excellent results, which show that our procedures are adequate and the quality of our food is optimal.

Our guests well being is our priority and the hotel will not take any risk when it comes to health & safety issues.

We hope to welcome you back to Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal at some stage in the near future.
